The Indypendent Issue 131: Standing Together--Jewish, Muslim and Arab-American Activists Join In A Common Cause

NYC, 09.02.2009 01:39

Despite the unilateral declarations on both sides of a ceasefire that followed Israel’s three-week long bombing campaign of the Gaza Strip, the situation in the occupied territories remains unchanged, with a continued tit-for-tat game continuing between Palestinian militants and the State of Israel.

The blockade of the Gaza Strip continues with Israel cutting off much needed humanitarian supplies for the 1.5 million residents of the coastal strip of Gaza. The specter of continued Israeli aggression is exacerbated by the probable election of Benjamin Netanyahu as the next Prime Minister of Israel, who has promised to take out Hamas and focus on the supposed Iranian “nuclear threat.”

With this in mind, the latest issue of the Indypendent takes a look at the grassroots movements in New York and elsewhere that are pressuring the United States to stop supporting Israel with billions of dollars in aid every year. Articles by Alex Kane, Zahra Hankir, Laura Kasinof and Jaisal Noor tackle the situation here and abroad.

Also included in this issue are interviews with the Chicago factory workers who successfully occupied the Republic Windows and Doors Factory in December; a look at the upcoming Brooklyn Food Conference; and reviews of books on the war in Iraq and Halliburton. See below for more!

City Officials (again) Challenge Activist Rights to March on War's Anniversary

Chicago, 08.02.2009 23:09

Peace and immigrant rights activists won an unprecedented victory in Chicago's Adminstrative Law Court to secure a permit to hold a parade against the war, scheduled for March 14. However, city officials quickly responded back by filing an emergency motion of appeal with barely a day's notice.

A subsequent hearing in Circuit Court resulted in a stalemate of sorts. From the newswire: "What happened today could best be described as us having dodged a bullet. It was not a victory, but fortunately it was not a defeat either. Even though we had no real lawyer and less than 24 hours to prepare, the City attempted to get the judge to rule today on their emergency motion, and hence completely screw us. They were playing very, very dirty. Fortunately the judge told them, at least for now."

A follow-up hearing is scheduled for Monday, February 9, at 2pm at (Room 1107 of the Daley Center, 50 W. Washington Street), where the presiding judge may hear arguments from attorneys about the merits of this "Emergency Motion". Whether or not activists win the fight over the motion will determine whether or not activists maintain their victory.

NYCers Say: Don't Break Palestinian Hearts On V-Day

NYC, 08.02.2009 19:39

Fifty-five New York rights advocates called today on the city's shoppers to boycott Israeli diamond mogul and settlement-builder Lev Leviev. The pre-Valentine's Day protest was the 13th demonstration held in front of Leviev's Madison Avenue jewelry store since it opened in November, 2007. Many New York shoppers paused to look at the heart-shaped signs and a Dating Game skit featuring a protester playing Leviev, and to listen to the noisy chants and the song "Lev's Diamonds are a Crime's Best Friend."

Unsere und andere Krisen

Germany, 08.02.2009 17:40

Workers walk out at Staythorpe

United Kingdom, 08.02.2009 16:09

Construction workers at the site of a new gas fired power station at Staythorpe near Newark, Nottinghamshire have joined workers across the country in striking against the use of foreign contractors. The issue has been contentious for some time, with unemployed workers holding protests outside the site since November. The issue was reignigted after workers at the Total oil refinery at Lindsey in Lincolnshire walked out over similar concerns.

On Monday, all 300 British workers at the site walked out for several hours. They returned to work on Tue 3rd Feb, but within an hour, around 60 staged an unofficial walkout in solidarity with others in the construction industry across the country. A ballot held amongst those who had walked out showed a majority in support of staying out on Wednesday, which they duly did. A protest also took place outside the London offices of contractor Alstom on Thursday 5th.

Keep the Oregon National Guard Home campaign

Rogue Valley, 07.02.2009 05:43

Today's (2/5/09) Press Release reminds us of Southern Oregon's support for this important campaign. The following local organizations have signed on: Citizens for Peace and Justice, Peace House, Rogue Valley Veterans for Peace Chapter 156 and Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice.

Portland, OR, February 5: Early this week, Oregon became the sixth state to introduce measures in its state legislature with the goal of challenging the use of the National Guard in Iraq. A bill, now known as HB 2556, would give the Governor the authority to withhold the Guard from federal deployment when there is no legally valid authorization. Identical House (HR 4) and Senate (SR 1) resolutions then call on the Governor to withhold the Guard deployments from Iraq and Afghanistan because the terms of the 2002 Iraq authorization by Congress have been met, and the 2001 "War on Terror" authorization improperly delegates warmaking powers to the President, resulting in a perpetual call-up of the Guard.

Police Seize UK Indymedia Server (Again)

United Kingdom, 06.02.2009 19:09

On 22 January 2009 an Indymedia server was seized by the Police in Manchester. This was related to postings about the recent Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) trial.

Kent Police had e-mailed imc-uk-contact in the morning requesting that personal information about the Judge from the recent SHAC trial in the UK be removed from the site. However this information had already been quickly removed in line with IMC UK policy. The e-mail also requested information relating to the poster be retained. Indymedia as an open posting news service does not log such information about its sources.

The machine was handed to the Police by the management of UK Grid, a Manchester based colocation facility, without a warrant being shown. It is believed that a warrant for this one server may exist and have been issued by a Chief Inspector. As the server was a mirror of the site, it can be concluded that the validity of the seizure wasn't checked, and the police attacked Indymedia infrastructure in the UK.

Other sites that have been affected as a result of this seizure include London Indymedia, the global Indymedia documentation project server, la Soja Mata – an anti-GM soya campaign focusing on South American development, Transition Sheffield and a Canadian campaign against the 2010 olympics.
