Radical Childcare Collective Forming - Learn more and join!

Portland, 12.02.2009 05:09

We're a small, as-of-yet unnamed collective dedicated to providing free childcare at radical community events in Portland. We haven't started up yet - we just formed two weeks ago, and are still in the very early planning stages.

We're hosting an info meeting for prospective volunteers at the Red and Black Cafe this upcoming Friday, February 13, at 5pm. This will be a laid back, informal opportunity for us to meet, exchange ideas, and start forming a more cohesive collective. The Red and Black Cafe is located at 400 SE 12th.

Here's what we want to do, in a nutshell:

Oregon State Senate Hears Case for Klamath Dam Removal Project

Portland, 12.02.2009 05:09

The Oregon State Senate heard testimony from many interested parties concerning the proposed removal of 4 dams on the Klamath river. If passed, the bill will be the first of many steps towards dam removal - something which many people feel is necessary for the ecological and political health of the region, while others believe is wasteful and unnecessary.

Activists Score Big Win Over Right to March in Chicago

Chicago, 12.02.2009 02:09

From the newswire: "Peace and immigration rights activists won big late Monday in circuit court when they defeated a City of Chicago emergency motion to put on hold a permit victory that the Chicago Anti-war and Immigrant Rights Coalition (CAIRC) had won in a lower court." [Read Dispatch]

City attorneys claimed that the presiding judge misinterpreted the city ordinance, but the tactic backfired. "[T]he whole [hearing] devolved into semantic hairsplitting reminiscent of the immortal Bill Clinton line about how something "depends on what the meaning of 'is' is. But Associate Judge Joseph M. Sconza wasn't having any of it. " [Read analysis]

But the city is likely to continue its cold-shoulder treatment of activists. As one of the attorneys for the activists stated at a press conference: "The reason we prevailed…was because the city violated a technicality of the permit ordinance. There was no political will to issue a permit, and there still is no political will to issue a permit. So this will continue to go on…" [Watch video of press conference]

Banner Drop Over Cross Bronx Expressway Continues Wave of Jewish Solidarity

NYC, 11.02.2009 18:08

A banner drop over New York City's entrance to the Cross Bronx Expressway, at 179th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan, carried out by members of Jews Against the Occupation/NYC, declared "Free Palestine." This action by Jewish New Yorkers continued the wave of increasingly public Jewish solidarity with the Palestinians recently targeted by the Israeli government's attack on the Gaza Strip, which killed over 1,300 people. Four banners were hung from overpasses on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and a fifth near the U.S.S. Intrepid on the West Side Highway in January.

The Whale Wars - Sea Shepherd Returns From Antarctica

United Kingdom, 11.02.2009 16:39

The flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the M/Y Steve Irwin, is heading back from the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary where it has been on patrol to enforce international conservation regulations in protection of the area's great whales. Since its departure from Brisbane, Australia on December 4th, the ship and its crew have been involved in various confrontations with a Japanese Whaling Fleet, which continues to operate a commercial whale hunt in the area illegally.

On December 26th, the Steve Irwin confronted the Japanese vessel Kaiko Maru. The ships collided and Sea Shepherd crew deployed butyric acid on its decks. From 1st February the whaling operation was shut down for 8 days straight with both sides of the conflict accusing each other of dangerous manoeuvres and tactics. On February 6th, the Steve Irwin collided with a harpoon ship twice, when it tried to block the ship from offloading a dead whale onto the factory ship Nisshin Maru. As part of an international crew of volunteers, 3 activists from the UK worked onboard the Sea Shepherd vessel during the campaign which was dubbed operation Musashi.

Mega-Landlord Attempts to Entrap Tenant Activist with Help of Palo Alto Police Deparment

San Francisco Bay Area, 11.02.2009 15:39

Page Mill Properties began buying up apartment buildings in the largely low-income and immigrant city of East Palo Alto in 2006. A short while later, the company announced rent increases that violated the city's Rent Stabilization Ordinance. The giant landlord/investor was challenged by tenant Christopher Lund, who called on the public pension fund CalPERS, a major Page Mill investor, to help stop Page Mill Properties's predatory actions. Page Mill began a campaign to ruin Mr. Lund's reputation, and with the assistance of the Palo Alto Police Department, tried to entrap the tenant activist.

Full article Hosting Indymedia Servers is Illegal?

Netherlands, 11.02.2009 09:39

This Monday, Kent Police arrested a man in Sheffield under the Serious Crime Act 2007 in relation to the recent Indymedia server seizure. His home was raided, all computer equipment and related papers taken. He was released after eight hours. The person had neither technical, administrative nor editorial access to the Indymedia UK website. He was only associated to the project by hosting its server.

The arrest took place under Section 44-46 of the Serious Crime Act, which was passed into law on 1st October 2008 to combat serious international crime like drug trafficking, prostitution, money laundering and armed robbery. Sections 44-46 refer to “encouraging or assisting offences”.

Kent police claim that they are after the IP address of the poster of two anonymous comments to a report about a recent animal liberation court case, which included personal details of the Judge. The IP address of the poster is not stored as Indymedia does not log IP addresses. This was acknowledged by British Transport Police in 2005, after the Bristol IMC server seizure.

For the police to arrest the person who happened to sign the contract for server hosting, is sheer intimidation, in light of Indymedia’s openly stated policy of no IP logging.

With the implementation of the EU Data Retention Directive in March 2009, the UK government attempts to turn every internet service provider in the country into part of the law enforcement apparatus. This legislation will provide a legal basis to track, intimidate, harass, and arrest people who are doing valuable and necessary work for social change, for example as peace activists, campaigners for economic and social justice or against police brutality.

The present intimidation of the open publishing alternative news platform Indymedia will have serious implications for anyone running a server in the UK which allows user contributions – blogs, social networking sites, wikis. This is an attempt to close down sites that respect the privacy of their contributors, pure and simple.

Wirral Council Votes To Slash Services: What Now?

United Kingdom, 11.02.2009 08:09

When Wirral Council finally voted to go ahead with the Cabinet's proposed slashing of local services on 9th February, it caused anguish to the hundreds of people who have been campaigning for the last few months. Council employees are now set to lose their jobs at the worst possible time, as a global recession bites. Service users have lost access to libraries, leisure centres, and cultural venues. This terrible attack on ordinary people has shown the limitations of protests, letter-writing campaigns, and pinning hopes on politicians. The need for a new strategy has been highlighted.

Turning the Tables: New Book Looks at How WTC Restaurant Workers Used 9/11 Tragedy As Organizing Opportunity

NYC, 11.02.2009 07:38

Atop the North Tower of the World Trade Center, employees from every nationality graced the tables of the Windows on the World restaurant serving exquisite wines and delicacies while speaking in their native tongues for the benefit of tourists that came to dine at one of the city’s must-see attractions. But after the 9/11 attacks, the plethora of languages was snuffed out. The fall of the towers took the lives of 73 Windows on the World employees, displacing hundreds more. In the years that followed, Windows on the World survivors found themselves still struggling to recover from the loss of their jobs and their co-workers while watching in dismay as anti-immigrant sentiments gained strength in the larger society.

HLS Exposed - Yet Again! SHAC To Shakedown Financial Investors In The City

United Kingdom, 10.02.2009 17:39

For the seventh time in ten years Huntingdon Life Sciences have been infiltrated and exposed, revealing shocking cruelty and footage of animal experiments filmed inside HLS during 2007 and 2008. The investigation exposes the primate trade across three continents, including individuals captured in the wild and shipped over, enduring 30 hour journeys in small cages from as far as Vietnam.

An undercover worker inside a primate unit at HLS in Cambridgeshire filmed struggling monkeys strapped to chairs and forced to inhale products. Many were housed in one cubic metre cages and then taken out to be held down by workers as tubes are forced down their throats. 217 monkeys were killed in just five studies for customers including AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithkline and the Ministry of Defence. The company are a contract testing laboratory, testing any products, on any non-human animals, for any company; pharmaceuctical, household, beauty or otherwise.

In response to the horrific footage, the imprisonment of seven SHAC campaigners for ‘conspiring to blackmail’ the notorious vivisection laboratory and the business’ falling share price, anti-vivisectionists will be taking to the streets of London on Friday 27th February during a global week of action against HLS’ financials. The SHAC City Shakedown march and protest will be for the 70,000 animals imprisoned and abused inside the labs, targeting the financial institutions who profit from and delay the companies collapse.

As the value of Europe’s largest and most exposed animal testing laboratory drops by over 80% in recent months, the New York Stock Exchange now have an extra reason to again kick the abusers off the exchange. Other reasons include the labs financial problems, serious debt, animal abuse, data falsification and scientific fraud.

Sheriff Marches Immigrant Inmates to Segregated Tents

United States, 10.02.2009 11:07

Arpaio's latest media stunt has been described as dehumanizing, degrading, barbaric, and worse. During the afternoon of Wednesday, February 4th, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio had about 200 undocumented immigrant inmates marched down a public street to a segregated tent city jail facility. He claims that housing the inmates separately in tents would save money, but has not explained how.

The procession was short, but dozens of protesters demonstrated their opposition nearby. Some inmates responded by raising their fists.

One individual was arrested while leaving. He faces a charge for Class III Criminal Trespassing. He was released later that night but must return to court.

Arpaio has been specifically targeting undocumented immigrants with sweeps and workplace raids. "I expect more arrests," Arpaio said. "I expect to put more tents up." (Associated Press). Recently, continuing media attention has been drawn over a video of a ski-masked Maricopa County Sheriff's officer arresting a mother of two crying kids during Arpaio's latest sweep in Buckeye in early January.

McDonalds Workers Upsize Their Pay

Aotearoa, 10.02.2009 07:10

After a series of strikes, Unite union members at McDonald’s restaurants have a new collective agreement with improved wages and conditions. Their actions included 50 strikes in dozens of stores from Whangarei to Hamilton and a protest outside the company’s national conference. There was a real fighting spirit at several stores, and the vote to settle was only passed by a narrow majority. Improvements won include a one-off bonus payment, and significant pay rises for team leaders and supervisors. Staff are to have more secure hours, which was one of the union’s key claims. When additional work hours are available they will be offered to existing staff, instead of more part-time or casualised positions being created. While the agreement has been settled, the campaign is not over. The starting rates for frontline staff are linked to the minimum wage. So if the minimum wage, which is currently $12 an hour, goes up in March, then so too will their wages. Unite is campaigning for the minimum wage to go up by a dollar an hour every year until it reaches $15. Links: Unite Union | Workers Party

Dresden: 13./14. Februar 2009 - Werden sie durchkommen?

Germany, 09.02.2009 23:39

Marie Mason sentenced to almost 22 years

Portland, 09.02.2009 15:38

Green Scare prisoner Marie Mason has been sentenced to almost 22 years for two acts of property destruction in which no one was injured. On Feb 5, 2009 in Lansing, Michigan Marie Mason was sentenced to a little under 22 years (262 months) for two acts of property destruction in 1999 and 2000; no one was hurt or killed in the actions. She was also ordered to pay $4+ million in restitution.

The prosecution had asked for 20 years and agreed not to appeal if the sentence was at least 15. Mason's lawyer John Minock had argued that, compared to the other Green Scare cases in Oregon, "a non-disparate sentence would be less than 10 years."

Mason's sentence is the longest given to any Green Scare defendant to date. The sentenced is expected to be appealed.

A court report will be posted soon on www.supportmariemason.org.
