Abolish All Immigration Prisons

United Kingdom, 17.03.2009 22:09

Last Friday evening, two dozen activists entered the offices of Minister for Immigration and Borders Phil Woolas in Oldham, ‘detaining’ him for about 30 minutes. The campaigners included members of No Borders Manchester, No One Is Illegal and the Anarchist Federation . The action intended to mirror the government’s practice of detaining migrants in ‘immigration removal centres’ without trial or sentencing, for indefinite periods of time. This was the second time since his appointment last year that the immigration minister has become the target of an action by No Borders, after a member of the group pushed a custard pie in his face last October .

On Tuesday morning, 20 anti-deportation campaigners blocked access to the Tinsley House immigration detention centre near Gatwick airport. Activists used d-locks and superglue to blockade the entrance gate for several hours. The action aimed to prevent the forced deportation on a charter flight of approximately 50 Iraqi refugees from the UK.

Groups affiliated to the UK No Borders network are now calling for demonstrations against immigration detention on Saturday 21st March. A protest march will lead from Bedford to the Yarl’s Wood detention centre, which was half destroyed by fire in 2002, following an uprising ignited by the ill-treatment of a sick woman by guards. Transport is available from London. Solidarity demonstrations are planned in Manchester and Edinburgh. The demonstration in Manchester will be going to the newly-expanded ‘Pennine House’ detention facility at the airport. The campaign to close this prison has achieved a high profile recently after the invasion of Phil Woolas’s offices and an intervention during a speech by Manchester City Council leader Richard Leese. In Edinburgh, campaigners will picket the private security company G4S. G4S profits from running immigration prisons in the UK, including Brook House, Dungavel near Glasgow and Pennine House.

Chicagoans Rally, March in Sixth Anniversary Iraq War Protest

Chicago, 17.03.2009 01:09

Protesters marked the sixth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq with actualizing a long-contested march and set of rallies in Chicago's Pilsen/Little Village community on Saturday March 14.

The protests, which typically were held around the war's anniversary on March 20, were moved to a week earlier to mobilize Chicago support for national antiwar protests in Washington DC on the weekend of March 20. Participants demanded an end to US wars of domination and empire abroad and to end wars on immigrants and youth at home, and echoed the need for continuing grassroots activism despite Democratic Party electoral gains.

U.S. Underreported Queensland Oil Spill marks 20th Anniversary of Exxon-Valdez Spill.

Portland, 15.03.2009 23:38

On March 24th, 1989, the Exxon Valdez spilled millions of gallons of oil into Prince William Sound. This week an estimated 60,000+ gallons of oil spilled from a tanker off of the Queensland coast, spoiling beaches, and sickening wildlife.

The U.S. press is underreporting this incident. There is barely any mention of it save for Yahoo running AP wire. As long as GasVees rule the roads, Oildom's Grip On Power will remain Entrenched.

Oregon Medical Marijuana Under Legislative Attack

Portland, 15.03.2009 23:38

Oregon Representatives and Senators are making an end run attack and back door prohibition attempt on Oregon Medical Marijuana patients.
Oregon State Representatives Maurer, Tomei, Thompson, Harker, Barker, Bentz, Berger, Bruun, Garrett, Gilliam, Gillman, Greenlick, Hanna, Jenson, Kotek, Krieger, Olson, Richardson, Schaufler, G Smith, Sprengger, Weidner, and Senators Burdick, Kruse, and Metsger have filed House Bill 3274 that would make the State of Oregon take responsibility for building and operating a facility to grow medical marijuana and provide it to patients through licensed pharmacies. It will charge a tax of $98.00 per ounce to patients obtaining it. It will disallow private grow operations.

Please, please, please - Yes, I'm begging you - contact your Representatives and Senators to oppose this sneaky, slimey attack on a program that only serves to offer some relief to persons suffering from debilitating illnesses and medical conditions.

Portland, 15.03.2009 23:38

This bill is sitting in committee and I am not sure when it is going to hit the floor. One thing I do know is that very few of the Representatives have read it. As usual they will vote on this based on what someone else is saying. Urge your members to read the legislation and ask for opposition to this devastating legislation. Devastating for everyday folks but great for factory farming ops like Monsanto, ADM, Sodexo and Tyson to name a few.

Rising Tide's ELAW/Action Repotback

Portland, 15.03.2009 23:38

Cascadia Rising Tide (CRT) has been busy recently getting ready for the Spring and Summer "festivities" and decided to kick off the season down in Eugene at the annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference (PIELC aka ELAW).

ELAW is a conference, held at the University of Oregon every year around the beginning of March, that is packed full of workshops ranging from Direct Action101 to the ins and outs of suing the government on anything environmental. ELAW is the largest environmental law conference in the country, is totally free and tends to signify the beginning of the summer environmental activist season here in Cascadia. Due to these factors CRT decided to come out and spread the word about Climate Justice perspectives and make the event a little more fun and action oriented.

Nottingham City Council workers protest job cuts

United Kingdom, 13.03.2009 13:40

On Monday 9th March, city council workers protested in Market Square against proposed cuts at the council which would see some 400 people laid off. The protest was several hundred strong and attracted particular attention in the local media because of the presence of film actor Samantha Morton, who was herself brought up in one of the council's children homes.

The evening after the protest and with no apparent regard for it whatsoever, Councillors passed the budget without amendment, confirming that 366 jobs would be cut with a further 333 vacant positions being axed. Inevitably, the council is now actively engaged in spinning the budget as an investment, an interpretation rejected by the unions.

BREAKING NEWS: Sea Lions Captured, ODFW, Army Corps Refusing to Allow Media Access

Portland, 13.03.2009 07:09

All the brass from the ODFW, WDFW, and Army Corps of Engineers are out at the dam at this very moment, frantically attempting to do advance damage control over possible public reaction to the news that the trapping and killing program has begun. So far, at least two sea lions are in state custody. It could be more, since officials are trying to be very tight lipped about this. But they've admitted to two. Given that more than 50 percent of the sea lions in their custody died last year, BEFORE they had permission to actually kill them, things are not looking good.

Although the public has been rather apathetic over the potential killings of sea lions thus far, officials know very well that once the killing starts, public shock and outrage are almost a certainty. So, in order to protect their own images as guardians of public interests and state wildlife, officials from ODFW, WDFW, and Army Corps of Engineers have refused to allow any media access to the trapped animals. They have banned cameras from the trapping location, have refused to alert the media when trapping or shooting will occur, and have not been forthcoming with any information about animals in their custody. A journalist with a (cough) prominent local paper requested permission to see the trapped animals in their cages, and was denied this request.

And if you care about these sea lions, get up to the dam. You can contact In Defense of Animals at 503-249-9996 or the Sea Lion Defense Brigade at SeaLionDefenseBrigade@lists.riseup.net to co-ordinate with other people when you can be up near the dam to bear witness to what is happening to the sea lions. The killing can take place anywhere from the dam all the way down to Beacon Rock, so the more eyes and ears (and CAMERAS!) out there, the better.

UPDATE: Sea Lion Dead!
