Project to Map Communally Held Indigenous Land in Mexico Comes Under Fire

San Francisco Bay Area, 30.03.2009 20:10

Peter Herlihy and Jerome Dobson, professors of Geography at Kansas University, received funding from the Foreign Military Studies Office, located at the Fort Leavenworth U.S. Army base in Leavenworth, Kansas, to map communally held indigenous land in the states of San Luis Potosi, and in Oaxaca, Mexico. The project, named the Bowman Expeditions or México Indígena, began mapping in 2005 in an indigenous region known as La Husteca, which is partially located in the state of San Luis Potosi, and then moved their operation to the state of Oaxaca amidst the statewide popular uprising of the Oaxacan Peoples' Popular Assembly (APPO) in 2006.

New Rules Favor Developers, Critics Charge

NYC, 30.03.2009 15:08

Rule changes proposed by the New York City Department of Buildings in February have been slammed by critics citywide, and have raised fears that the changes could lead to a significant rise in illegal construction across the city and boroughs after they are implemented in mid-April.

The Rules of the City of New York (RCNY) guide city agencies like the Department of Buildings (DOB) when interpreting the City Charter and enforcing its laws. RCNY changes can be made by the Buildings Department without a vote from the City Council.

Auckland Forum: Five Years of UN Sponsored Terror In Haiti

Aotearoa, 30.03.2009 06:41

Monday, April 6, 7.30pm, Trades Hall, 147 Great North Road, Grey Lynn. April Global Peace and Justice Auckland (GPJA) forum: Haiti today: five years of UN sponsored military occupation brings disaster. In February, 2004, the elected president and government of Haiti were overthrown by a right-wing paramilitary rebellion backed by troops from the United States, France and Canada. A foreign-appointed, regime of human rights violations ruled Haiti for the two years that followed. An electedgovernment has ruled Haiti since early 2006. But the real power is held by a 10,000-member, UN-sponsored military occupation regime. Poverty, human rights violations and environmental degradation are worsening dramatically in a country that was already the poorest in the Americas. Call centre workers stand strong against lock out and nuclear ship visits

Aotearoa, 30.03.2009 00:10

50 Unite Union members at the OCIS call centre stood strong on Friday night after their employer locked them out. The lock out came after three weeks of wildcat strike action by workers. Small groups of, nearly all teenaged, interviewers and supervisors had been regularly walking off shift, especially during unpopular weekend shifts. Scuffles broke out and the police turned up Friday night as officials and members attempted to rush the door to the call centre.

The lock out followed the first ever general stop work meeting of market researchers where union delegates from across Auckland and Hamilton and a represenative from the National Union of Workers in Australia voted for united action against OCIS for attempting to win $30,000 in damages from the union. The damages were for, among other things, Unite calling OCIS a shadowy multinational.

By Saturday afternoon the lock out was over after a settlement was reached that included: higher rates of pay, better job security and payments to locked out union members equal in value to the amount lost as a result of the lock out. As part of retaliation for the lock out the union had released information that members had been doing secret research on whether the public wants the return of nuclear ship visits.

Saturday morning also saw Unite union housekeeping staff at Crowne Plaza walk out to teach their bosses a lesson.

The Anatomy of High Impact Direct Action: Strategies For Animal Liberation With Peter Young

Portland, 29.03.2009 18:09

Don't forget this (other) great event this weekend. Thanks for the support....

For the past 30 years, anonymous members of the Animal Liberation Front have carried out over 1,000 covert actions around the world in the name of animal liberation. Working outside of the confines of the law, these activists achieve results not by traditional methods of leafleting and protesting, but by freeing animals from cages, disassembling machinery used in the exploitation of animals and destroying inhumane facilities used to house animals for commercial use. Peter Young is an animal rights activists and former animal liberation prisoner. Sentenced to 2 years in prison for the release and conspiracy to release thousands of mink from fur farms across the Midwest, Young brings life to stories of animal liberation, political repression and sacrifice in the name of animal liberation.

The Anatomy of High Impact Direct Action presentation featuring Peter Young will be held on March 29, 2009, at 2p.m. at Portland State University in Room 238 of the Smith Memorial Union Building. Admission is free.

Krisenproteste in Berlin und Frankfurt

Germany, 28.03.2009 13:40

April 2009 in London.

Three PDX Benefits for AETA Defendants - Show Your Support!

Portland, 28.03.2009 10:39

Three amazing PDX benefits are planned for 6 activists charged under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA). Your support is needed.
[BACKGROUND:]
-CALIFORNIA 4 Arrests: On February 19th and 20th, four animal rights activists from California were arrested on charges for their alleged involvement in "terrorist" activity relating to a long running campaign against University of California research facilities. Illuminating yet another dark chapter in what has been termed the "Green Scare," their case represents a sustained FBI mission to criminalize political dissent. Protesting, chalking slogans, and producing leaflets are among the "terrorist" activity of which these activists are being accused. Each of their charges hold 5 year penalties.

-UTAH - 2 Arrests: On Thursday March 5th the witch hunt expanded when two Utah activists were also arrested under AETA...[who] are being accused for their alleged participation raid of a South Jordan, UT mink farm in August, and the alleged attempted raid of a second mink farm in October.

SHOW YOUR SOLIDARITY: Strong community fundraising and support are need to help pay for the enormous legal bills of all of the AETA defendants. Three great benefits are planned for the next week and the AETA defendants need your help. Come out and show your solidarity!

Environmental Groups Object to Militarization of Coastal Waters

San Francisco Bay Area, 28.03.2009 10:17

The U.S. Navy is facing criticism for it's training operations on the Pacific West Coast. Environmental groups say some areas should be off limits to weapons testing. The Navy wants to use nearly the entire U.S. coastline for weapons and warfare training including under water bomb detonations and mining, and the use of aircraft, missiles and sonar. Environmental groups say the use of sonar and bombs has long-range effects on marine life.

U.S. Socialists: Obamanomics offers little hope for working people

Portland, 27.03.2009 21:09

Considering the track record of the government bailouts to save the "free market," socialists believe an additional $2 trillion will not ease up credit markets and will do little to ease the on-going national economic crisis. Congress has presently invested more than $2 trillion since February 2008 to free up the credit markets; however, the credit markets remain as frozen as Antarctica.
