Report on My Arrest at Mittleman

Portland, 02.04.2009 19:39

A Vietnam vet arrested for walking on the sidewalk at the Mittleman AIPAC demonstration by cop who obviously slept through h.s. history class when they were covering the Constitution—especially the First Amendment. And the Mittleman folks who evidently slept through that presentation also.

There I was among some good folks having fun and making a point to the people going into the AIPAC meeting. I was thinking about going home on the bus and wanted to say goodbye to some friends when I was told that I could not cross a driveway that ran on the sidewalk into the street. I told the cop that they could not do that unless I was blocking traffic. I went to go across and was pushed back by a cop and then I tried again and was arrested. The officer who arrested me was angry about something because this was the roughest I've been handled thus far. I was hooked up to little earl (oxygen bottle on wheels) and still got arrested. I was not planning this and was disappointed that I could not talk the police out of an order that was unconstitutional.

Carnivorous Colorado “Asset Forfeiture Bill” Postponed Indefinitely

United States, 02.04.2009 17:37

March 27, 2009 — HB09-1238 if passed, would have been a Forfeiture Field Day for Colorado Sheriffs. Police would no longer need a conviction to Civilly Forfeit a person’s property. Public resistance was fierce.

HB09-1238 would have opened the door for police to target business and homeowners for Civil Asset Forfeiture in “poor communities” where crime rates are higher. Poor neighborhoods, schools and community services dependent on property taxes could have been economically impacted by dropping real estate values, the probable-result of multi-family and other investors frightened away by the HB09-1238 “no conviction needed” to forfeit property law... read more

"El capitalismo no está funcionando”. Fuertes movilizaciones contra el G20 en Londres.

Canarias, 02.04.2009 13:10

G20 in London

Germany, 02.04.2009 02:39

Public Meeting: Migrant Workers, the Economic Crisis and the Unions

Aotearoa, 02.04.2009 01:40

7.30pm, Tuesday, April 7, Trades Hall. 147, Great North Rd, Grey Lynn Recently there have been decisions by companies to make NZ workers redundant while continuing to employ migrant workers on temporary visas. There have been calls by both the Labour Party, National and some unionists for these migrant workers to be laid off first. The immigration service has revoked the work visas of some workers who kept their jobs. Migrant advocates have raised concerns that racist sentiments are being fostered and ask the question why migrant workers shouldn’t have their rights protected. New Zealand-born or permanent residents ask why they should be sacked when temporary visa holders keep their jobs. This raises questions on how unions should be approaching migrant workers when there may be conflicting claims for support from different groups of workers who are their members.

Is 'Washington' Winning?

DC, 01.04.2009 04:31

...too many inside-the-beltway environmental and climate groups since Obama won the Presidency and the Democrats, are moderating their tactics and their demands, scaling them back to gain access to high-level White House and Congressional leaders, who themselves are being impacted by Republican intransigence and fossil fuel supporting Democrats. It’s an old, familiar story which has played out innumerable times on other issues in the past. And it’s a very big problem for the low-income people of the world, most of them people of color, who are most vulnerable to the more destructive storms, floods, droughts, wildfires, famines and sea level rise that we’re already seeing as the atmosphere heats up.

Tell the FCC: Support Local TV

Portland, 01.04.2009 01:09

Community television can help fill the void left by a collapsing media system. But the most prevalent form -- local public access stations (or PEG channels) -- is under attack by the likes of AT&T and Comcast, which are trying to bury community stations on their networks and make them difficult to find.

You Can Help: Protect Community Television.

The deadline to comment at the FCC expires in less than 36 hours [April 1st]. Please make sure that the commission hears from the public about the importance of local media.

BNP candidate "would revel at causing some havoc"

United Kingdom, 31.03.2009 17:09

Councillor Lewis Allsebrook, who is running for the party in the upcoming European elections, has said he "would revel at causing some havoc" in Brussels. In a series of bizarre outbursts on his many blogs he has also called Church of England readings of the Bible "normally twisted and evil" and claimed that there is "a ring of darkness around Nottingham" that the Labour party would call "Diversity".

Meanwhile, in Sutton in Ashfield, the BNP's fundraising fish and chips dinner at the Nag's Head, featuring "light and sound effects plus cinema-graphics", was spoilt by an anti-fascist demonstration.

Chicago Opposition to 2016 Olympics Bid Ramps Up

Chicago, 31.03.2009 02:09

Chicago is one of four finalist cities for the 2016 Summer Olympics, though Chicago's bid for the thirty-first Summer Olympiad has drawn controversy among Chicagoans. The Chicago 2016 committee has hired the controversial PR firm Hill & Knowlton, and surveys of Chicagoans show a degree of skepticism over Chicago. Despite promises to keep Chicago tax funds out of any payment for the Olympics, the city and mayor have evidently broken that promise.

If history is any guide, should Chicago win the bid, Chicagoans have economic disaster and a trail of human rights and civil rights abuses to look forward to in the wake of Olympics. Some Chicago community groups have objected to the Olympics, while others sought community benefits agreements with the city, and even protested within City Hall.

The stakes will be raised in on April 2 when the International Olympic Committee visits Chicago for a week-long visit. No Games Chicago, a coalition of Chicago communities, is organizing opposition against the Olympic bid.

White Unity? It's Bonehead Against Bonehead in the "White Pride" Scene

Portland, 31.03.2009 01:39

On April 11, 2009, the white supremacist group "East Coast White Unity" (ECWU) plans to host a neo-nazi gathering in Boston, MA named "Patriot Action 2009". The co-sponsor of this event is Volksfront International, a racist skinhead organization founded in 1994, which has a presence in several US states as well as chapters in Canada, Australia and Europe. Although the Boston event is intended as a display of unity between fascist groups, anti-fascists have discovered plotting and betrayal behind the scenes of the white power movement, the extent of which many event organizers and scheduled attendees might not be aware.

'God Hates Fags' gets counterdemos at Fairfax High

DC, 31.03.2009 00:11

A report from Virginia! In Virginia, the Westboro Baptist Church started off its tour by first visiting Fairfax High School. Most of the counter protestors expressed confusion at this choice of venue, as Fairfax High School has not done anything newsworthy with regards to the LGBTQ community. It was later revealed that Westboro chose the high school as a target because of Fairfax High School's Rebel mascot; Church members claim that Fairfax High School was an example of how America rebels against god. Police at Fairfax High School were nervous and on-edge, but no altercations occurred. The Westboro crowd then moved to George Mason U to protest that school's Pride Week. The five WBC members were met by a diverse crowd of counter-protesters numbering in the low hundreds. Police at this event were out in even greater number, but their disposition seemed more bored than anything else.
