UC: America's Most Ecocidal "Green" University

Santa Cruz, CA, 14.04.2009 04:20

Will & Darwin write: Our intention... is to generate a greater level of critical reflection and discussion concerning the dominant role of the politics of "greening"... that characterize campus-based environmental organizations.... We can think of few more timely priorities for those who would use university campuses as organizing bases [than] to challenge the system of authoritarian power that is in the process of destroying the ecological basis for the existence of life on earth.

The Collapse of “The Movement”; the Resistance and the Revolutionary Movement We Need

DC, 13.04.2009 20:10

A grievous, shameful and dangerous state of affairs permeates the movements of opposition in the U.S. Their outlook and politics have collapsed into passive acquiescence and even overt criminal complicity with the policies and actions of the ruling class… In an act which concentrates the treachery of this collapse, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ), the largest anti-war coalition, at their national meeting in December 2008, voted to oppose organizing demonstrations on the 6th Anniversary of the Iraq War on March 19 and 21, 2009. In opposition to mounting a determined struggle to end the wars and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, and instead of calling people into the streets to stand with the people of the world, they decided “to mobilize a new base of people who have been inspired by Obama” in a four month campaign in commemoration of Martin Luther King titled, “Beyond War, A New Economy Is Possible: Yes We Can!”

Large Protests Erupt In Support Of Tamils

United Kingdom, 13.04.2009 12:39

Spontaneous protests have erupted in London as a result of the ongoing state violence in Sri Lanka. On Monday, over 300 Tamil youths blockaded Westminster Bridge, which remained closed overnight. On Tuesday and Wednesday large numbers gathered outside parliament and had reached at its peak up to 3000 to call on Gordon Brown to 'open his eyes' and work towards securing an immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka. Under the banner 'Stop the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka' over 100.000 people marched in Central London on Saturday 11th April. Further demonstrations happened in Oslo, Paris and Copenhagen. Reports: [1] [2] [photos 1] [photos 2]

Earlier on in the week police tactics were violent, with unprovoked attacks on demonstrators. On Wednesday morning Tamil flags were being confiscated under the Terrorism act. Demonstrators reported that police used truncheons and dragged protesters across the ground. A three-year-old's leg was reportedly broken in the process. Seven people have been arrested, two under the terrorism act on suspicion of carrying articles supporting proscribed literature. Two people started a hunger strike earlier in the week, of which one was still fasting on Saturday 11th April.

More than 300,000 Tamils are currently under siege by the Sri Lankan forces. Aerial bombardments and shelling of civilians are continuing. Children and elderly are dying as a direct result of the aerial bombardment. There has been increased violence in Sri Lanka following the capture of Tamil territory. It is estimated more than 70,000 people have already died in the conflict.

Road Trip Demo for Sea Lions This Thursday

Portland, 13.04.2009 06:39

The killing has begun on the Columbia. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has already started killing sea lions on their hit list - animals who have been seen eating even ONE salmon at the Bonneville Dam. They've even claimed the authority to kill animals NOT on their list. Last week, four more beloved friends were put to death behind our backs by callous government agents who believe they can get away with this. Stop the river of blood! We have to keep pressure on, and set the record straight regarding this misguided government plan to kill a protected species in a dubious effort to "save" endangered salmon for fishermen's nets. So we're chartering the 'Cool Bus', a bio-diesel bus with room for 25 activists, and taking a road trip to Salem for a demonstration at the ODFW headquarters. After the one-hour demo, we will head to the Capitol to visit our legislators to ask them to cancel sea lion killing, a plan that fails to address the real problems that plague salmon recovery; overfishing, the dams, and habitat destruction.

RSVP today, as we still have a few seats left on the Cool Bus, and we'd love for you to join us. Save some lives this Thursday.

WHEN: Thursday, April 16, Bus leaves at 10 am

WHERE: Meeting at In Defense of Animals office, NE 18th and Alberta, boarding a bus and driving to Salem.

PCJ Sues MPD to Force Disclosure of Orders and Policies

DC, 12.04.2009 23:11

The Partnership for Civil Justice Fund announced April 8 that it has filed a lawsuit to force the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department to disclose its orders and policies. The DC MPD is in violation of its legal obligations as mandated by the D.C. Council in 2001 to make this information public and has further refused to make such information public upon written request under the D.C. Freedom of Information Act. The lawsuit states: "Since 2001, the MPD has been statutorily obligated to make public, produce upon demand, and publish on the Internet the public records at issue herein. "Eight years have passed, and the MPD still refuses to release the basic public records about its operation, orders and policies."

DC, 12.04.2009 04:24

Full disclosure—-I wasn't at the New School occupation today— or involved in the planning processes before it, for the simple reason that I'm not a New School student, but given that I am a petit-bourgeois student, was at the "Take Back NYU" action and am a self-described rabble rouser, I figured I would take the opportunity to ramble semi-coherently for 15 minutes on the subject[s].

Workers Locked Out – Bosses Locked In

Aotearoa, 11.04.2009 04:40

Call center workers at Synovate in South Auckland were today locked out by their employer. The workers had been negotiating for secure hours and a pay rise of a dollar when they received word by text last night that they would not be allowed to come back to work. Upon arriving at the call center this morning union members found the front door padlocked shut by the company and a notice telling their non union workers to sneak in by the back door. In response to this attempt to use scab labour Union officials and members added their own locks to the front door and used cars and locks to block all other entrances to the building. This effectively locked the bosses inside for two hours until the union allowed one car to be moved to allow delegates to enter the building to continue the negotiations.

DC, 11.04.2009 00:10

Dramatizing a contemporary 'crucifixion', Paul Magno, local peace and justice activist, was arrested during a Good Friday nonviolent protest at the White House. Two colleagues helped chain Paul to the fence of the president's home, and an assembled group of protesters, with Witness Against Torture's 100 Day Campaign (, began to sing "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord." The activists are calling for the immediate closure of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the end of all torture. The group has also begun calling for the closure of Bagram, Afghanistan, despite U.S. military plans to double the size of the military prison.

Misuse of Ambulance Vehicle in Downtown Area

Portland, 10.04.2009 22:39

Bullied by Paramedics on my way home in downtown.
I'm a gay male in my late 20's, and like to go out and have a few with friends on occasion. As I walked back to my place last night (around 1:30 AM) from the China Town District back to SW Downtown (south on 2nd Ave.), I noticed an ambulance vehicle driving behind me in the same direction that I was walking, not unusual. But it was going slow with the sirens off. The two men seated i the vehicle were staring at me. I made a questioning gesture (like a "what do you want? kind of gesture). I wasn't walking funny, and I'm pretty sure that I didn't exhibit any signs of being injured. So really, what was it? At this point I crossed the street, and the guys in the ambulance changed lanes and pulled up right beside me and rolled down the windows. The driver asked "Do you have a problem?". And I responded with "What do you want?

The Secret, Ignored Value of Labor

Portland, 10.04.2009 21:41

For centuries the means of production have been owned by only a few individuals. This has led to spectacular robberies like are apparent at the present time, but also to a quiet, ignored theft of the real value of labor.
To give a logical answer as to why laboring people are not paid nearly the real value of their labor, I need to go back in history and give a basic scientific explanation of the situation.

Come to Pioneer Square 10am Saturday April 11th to help defend the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal!

Patrick Ryan will be speaking tonight at 6:30pm on KBOO to speak on Mumia's court case.

Today, the US Supreme Court rejected Mumia Abu-Jamal's appeal for a new guilt-phase trial. The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether to consider the Philadelphia DA's separate appeal, which is attempting to execute Abu-Jamal WITHOUT a new sentencing hearing.
In response to today's rejection, Abu-Jamal's lead attorney Robert R. Bryan will be filing a "petition for re-hearing" at the US Supreme Court.

Break up the banks on 4/11: A NEW WAY FORWARD PROTEST & RALLY

Portland, 10.04.2009 21:41

Our plan: Real structural change of Wall StreetDECENTRALIZE: Any bank that's "too big to fail" means that it's too big for a free market to function. The financial corporations that caused this mess must be broken up and sold back to the private market with strong, new regulatory and antitrust rules in place -- new banks, managed by new people. An independent regulatory body must protect consumers from predatory practices.

As Wall St. corporations grew bigger and bigger until they were "too big to fail," they also became so politically powerful that they led to distorted and unfair policies that served companies, not citizens.

To stop the banks, Americans are planning forceful, creative actions all over the country for April 11. We'll make our voices resound in those closed-door meetings with the bankers. Spread the word!

From Sodus, NY: Sister Luci Romero Describes Intense Police and Border Patrol Repression — Calls for Ongoing Solidarity

United States, 10.04.2009 21:38

Sister Luci Romero, introduced by Sodus Church Watch founder Dr. Lory Ghertner, discusses the current situation for the migrant community in Sodus. She describes intense police and Border Patrol repression and calls for ongoing solidarity from Anglo neighbors and supporters. Dr. Ghertner and Sister Lucy are very worried about increased Border Patrol activity, including the detention of farmworkers and their families this week. There are unconfirmed reports this weekend of a large processing plant raid in Wayne County. Sister Luci also reported on her view of a heroic teacher’s actions whereby a pregnant mom returned back home to her children. The woman had been detained coming out of her doctor’s office by local police and taken into custody by Border Patrol.

There were two additional interviews conducted in the church parking lot with recording problems. Apologies to Nichole, a lifelong resident of Sodus and Petra, a migrant worker who wishes for reforms that will allow her friends to simply live without fear and anxiety every day. We will return and do the interviews inside! 1. Mai 2009.

Shining Path Gains Control over Areas, Leads Attacks Against Peruvian Military

San Francisco Bay Area, 10.04.2009 14:40

In recent years, attacks escalated against the Peruvian army by a new formation of the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso), the Communist Party of Peru (CPP) (Maoist). Long believed to fade away after the capture of Abimael Guzmán (Chairmen Gonzalo) and other top leader from the CPP Central Committee in 1993, the Shining Path has surprisingly gained force and weapons. They recently led attacks on the local police and military in the Andes jungles and in the Ayacucho and Junin provinces.
