BNP activists assault anti-fascists in Liverpool city centre

United Kingdom, 24.04.2009 13:40

Yesterday, April 23rd, saw fifteen members of Liverpool BNP members take to the streets of our city again. As word got around that they were leafleting on Church Street, around 12.30pm, local anti-fascists did what they could to mobilise people (not the easiest thing to do mid-week, mid afternoon!). By 1pm there was around twenty anti-fascists leafleting in and around the BNP, making it loud and clear what the BNP stood for, and why people shouldn’t tolerate their presence. This was met by the standard bellowing of ‘get a wash’ and ‘get a job’ from the BNP only serving to further alienate members of the public, from whom they were already getting short shrift.

The Indypendent Issue 134: A New May Day Rises

NYC, 23.04.2009 16:39

May Day 2009 is approaching fast, and immigrant rights and workers’ rights groups are organizing for a strong showing in the face of the economic crisis.

Capitalizing on the massive outpouring of immigrant support in 2006, immigrants are seeking to hold President Obama’s feet to the fire, demanding comprehensive immigration reform that would grant legal status to the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants residing in the United States.

Karen Yi reports on May Day 2009, writing, “The government has committed trillions of dollars to bail out Wall Street in less than a year. And as the Obama administration and the corporate elite bicker over what money goes where, those most affected by the economic crisis have been seemingly shut out of negotiations.

Caught in between the finger-pointing and bank bailouts are the communities that are absorbing the brunt of foreclosures and rising unemployment. But this May 1, the unemployed, the homeless and immigrants are taking their demands to the streets.

The New York May 1st Coalition, a committee of more than 40 immigrant and worker rights organizations in the New York region, will rally at noon at Union Square to celebrate International Workers’ Day (May Day) and to hold President Barack Obama accountable on his 100th day in office.” For the rest of the story, see the link to “Working to Reclaim May Day” below, as well as two other stories by Karen Yi focusing on day laborers and the inhumane immigrant detention system. First Sea Lions, Now Cormorants

Portland, 22.04.2009 05:39

First, officials went after sea lions. Now, legislators are trying to target cormorants for the same reason. They say that, since we humans want to kill so many animals, we need to kill off all natural predators so that we don't need to deal with our own unnatural behavior.

Senate Joint Memorial 7 is a bill that is sponsored by Fred Girod, the same guy trying to make it even easier to kill sea lions in Oregon. It's a bill that would make it legal to kill cormorants. Are you familiar with cormorants? They're beautiful black water birds with yellow beaks, who sit on posts on the river and hold their wings out like little statues, warming themselves in the sun.

Related: Earth day for Sea Lions, Cormorants, Terns, and other creatures: Today, as I was walking near a school in rural Colton, Oregon, I observed several volunteers, out planting trees, and improving the habitat near a stream that meanders through the school ground. Colton probably has more trees (albeit second, third, fourth, and even fifth growth) per capita than pernaps 90% of the country.
