Belarus, 27.04.2009 08:37

Labor Limbo: Philadelphia museum guards fighting for union recognition highlight the potential power of "card check."

United States, 26.04.2009 13:08

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has become an unlikely backdrop to the national campaign to pass the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), legislation that would make it easier for workers to form unions.

The museum's guards, a majority of which signed union authorization cards in November 2008, find themselves in an unusual bind: They are unable to find a union willing and able to push their employer, security industry giant AlliedBarton, to recognize them as a legitimate bargaining unit. In U.S. v. Cuba: Raul Will Be Speaking for Me, Not Obama

DC, 25.04.2009 19:10

U.S. politicians, from Barrack Obama to Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.), are expressing so much concern for human rights in Cuba as a basis for ending the four-decade blockade, “demanding” that Cuba “free its political prisoners” and move toward greater democratization. I see this as just another way of the U.S. deflecting attention from its own horrendous human rights record, domestically and globally. Connie Mack, who is the ranking member of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere and was with President Obama at the Summit of the Americas last week, stated afterward that “I wish the president would have taken the opportunity to speak about [human and political rights issues in Cuba] and remind those countries who want to forget about the brutality of the Castro regime.” Did anyone then ask him about “Guantanamo,” or how “enhanced interrogation techniques” is not torture by another name? Has anyone said anything about “kidnapping” or “indefinite illegal detention”? Did anyone ask Representative Mack if he had seen the movie “American Violet”? It does not appear from where I stand as a black person in America that it is in any position to be accusing others of human rights violations and of lacking democracy. Remembering the past to change the future – We must hold the torture state accountable

Racial Profiling Incident Leads to Police Shooting of “Toto” Kaiyewu

United States, 25.04.2009 14:07

A press conference was held at the Independent Media Center with the family of Oluwatofunmi Kaiyewu, a 23 year-old medical student who was killed by local police on April 6, 2009. This bizarre series of events began in the former “sundown town” of Villa Grove, 15 minutes southeast of Urbana, led to a car chase, and ended on Interstate 74 with five bullets fired by officers from three departments ― University of Illinois Police, Champaign County Sheriff’s Department, and Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department.

The Kaiyewu family drove from Texas to hold the press conference and visit the site where their son was gunned down. They were joined by Jan Susler of the People’s Law Office, a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and known for her defense of Puerto Rican political prisoners. They had heard little from police about what happened and wanted answers.

Earth Day Actions See Celebration, Clean-Up, Concern

San Francisco Bay Area, 24.04.2009 16:10

Earth Day 2009 was cause for celebration with festivals in Sunnyvale and Santa Cruz, but also cause for concern. While elementary school students in the East Bay cleaned up pollution along the Albany waterfront, university students at Stanford addressed the problem of access to water in Africa. More than 60 students carried water in buckets across Stanford's campus to bring attention to the fact that daily clean water access is not a reality for 1.1 billion people around the world.

Homeless File Civil Rights Claims Against Mayor Adrian Fenty

DC, 24.04.2009 15:11

Homeless residents, displaced from downtown due to the closing of Franklin Shelter, have filed federal claims in the US District Court against Mayor Adrian Fenty for violating the Fair Housing Act, the American with Disabilities Act, and place of residence discrimination under the DC Human Rights Act. The claims result from the growing and systematic pattern of displacement of the largely African American homeless population from the downtown area to the poorest and most violent parts of the city, where health care facilities, sources of proper nutrition, job and counseling opportunities are virtually absent.
