NYers Call for Mother’s Day Boycott of Leviev Diamonds over Israeli settlements

NYC, 11.05.2009 01:40

On the day before Mother’s Day, 40 New York human rights advocates gathered at the Leviev jewelry store on Madison Avenue and called on throngs of weekend Madison Avenue shoppers to boycott Israeli diamond mogul Lev Leviev over his companies’ construction of Israeli settlements on Palestinian land in West Bank villages including Bil’in and Jayyous. Mother’s Day is one of the biggest jewelry shopping periods in the US annually. The New York protest came as controversy is growing in Norway over Norwegian government investments in Leviev’s company Africa-Israel. The New York protesters also commemorated Bassem Abu Rahma from Bil’in who was shot to death by Israeli soldiers last month during a peaceful protest against the construction on Bil’in’s land of Israel’s wall and of the Mattityahu East settlement by a Leviev company.

Let's build a peoples movement that addresses the root causes of Climate Change!

Aotearoa, 10.05.2009 22:41

We stand at a crossroads. The facts are clear. Global climate change, caused by human activities, is happening, threatening the lives and livelihoods of billions of people and the existence of millions of species. Social movements, environmental groups, and scientists from all over the world are calling for urgent and radical action on climate change.

Between 7th and 18th December 2009, the governments of the world will come to Copenhagen (Denmark) for the fifteenth UN Climate Conference (COP-15). This will be the biggest summit on climate change ever to have taken place. Yet, previous meetings have produced nothing more than business as usual.

We call on all peoples around the planet to mobilize and take action against the root causes of climate change and the key agents responsible both in Copenhagen and around the world.

Mayday! In The East Midlands

United Kingdom, 10.05.2009 14:40

" It's important that we don't give up in the face of increasing economic uncertainty, an ever more authoritarian government, rampantly cruel capitalism and looming environmental disaster. Together, we can fight these monsters. I hope the positive, defiant atmosphere of May 2nd will help us keep strong to continue our struggles. "

We gathered at Brewhouse Yard on Saturday morning. Gazebos were hurried erected, and flags set flying. There was a large number of stalls from a variety of campaigning organisations and trade unions. Marchers were serenaded by the socialist Clarion Choir, and then set off for a short march along Maid Marian Way, Friar Lane, and along the side of the Square, returning by the castle and Robin Hood. The mood was upbeat as, preceded by a samba band, we waved banners, flags and placards as we marched. The welcome presence of a large contingent from the Communication Workers' Union, fighting to keep the mail public, and ably supported by Postman Pat, gave us a good presence on the streets.

PHOTO Report Back: May Day 2009 March

Seattle, 09.05.2009 07:09

This was the "year of hope," a year when many believed immigration reform was within reach, so I expected more people to be in the streets. But with the recession/ depression, perhaps workers were less likely to risk taking the day off to celebrate May Day. The march included union activists, students from around Puget Sound, socialists, gay activists, anarchists, peace activists, and the many immigrant rights groups.

At Occidental Park, there was a band that played loud and rowdy Mexican music. Some of the speakers spoke in Spanish to the mostly immigrant crowd. Others spoke in English. One of speakers told the crowd that we don't want to wait any longer for reform. Now is the time.

PORTLAND TRANSIT RIDERS UNION--Fully fund public transit! No Cuts to TriMet!

Portland, 09.05.2009 03:39

Fight Tri-Met Cuts! Public transportation is a human right!

We are a group of Tri-Met riders and community activists which was initiated by the Portland Social Forum. In these times of economic disparity, when ridership is up, we believe that cutting services, hiking fares, and possibly even laying off public transportation employees is counter to building a sustainable city. Inspired by the Los Angeles Bus Riders Union, we work to build a long-term program for community involvement and participation in the decisions that affect millions of riders, and like the Bus Riders Union we believe public transportation is a human right. We reject any attempts to cut services or hike fares and strive to work with Tri-Met to build a truly democratic and sustainable city. For questions, comments or contributions please contact us.
