Fall Creek imber Project Occupied by Forest Activists

Portland, 04.06.2009 02:39

Do you remember the days of Fall Creek, Warner Creek, the first Cascadia Summers? Do you remember the lands that were saved by the direct efforts of concerned citizens? We remember, and it is within that greater tradition of non-violent forest defense that we now come to you proclaiming that a resurgence has begun.

As of June 1, 2009 tree-sits have been deployed within the Fall Creek Project planning area in defiance of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) propositions to clearcut 400 acres in the area. This action is taken as an escalation of the Cascadia Summer campaign against the Western Oregon Plan Revisions (WOPR) and corruption within the highest levels of the BLM. Perhaps the BLM will listen to these events, as they did not listen to the more than 30,000 Oregonians who filed formal protest against the WOPR. These are public lands and we will not sit back and watch the continuing devastation caused by government incompetence and corporate manipulation. As far as the economy is considered, do not be deceived, you will find no jobs on a dead planet.

Dr. Tiller's Murder: Fascist Terrorism and Its Pampered Apologists

DC, 03.06.2009 19:12

The rampant terrorism and violence against women and health care professionals who dare to provide women's health services took its latest victim when Dr. George Tiller was brutally gunned down in his church on Sunday in Wichita, Kansas. The government and the corporate media coddle these anti-women terrorists. In the last 30 years, right-wing bigots have carried out 5,800 reported acts of violence against women's health care providers, including targeted assassination, bombings, arsons, death threats, kidnappings and assaults, according to NARAL. Hundreds of thousands, and perhaps millions, of women have been assaulted and harassed by the right wing as they tried to see a doctor.

RICO LAWS? PROVE IT!!

Rochester, 03.06.2009 08:07

On April 27, 2009, a number of people were arrested in Rochester, New York and charged under the RICO statute for alleged crimes.

Those arrested are facing long prison sentences under the RICO law, including 10 - 20 years to LIFE.

THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY.

There is no such organization/enterprise as the ‘Chain Gang or ‘Wolf Pack’ gang, and no factual basis or foundation to support racketeering charges; as a result, the use of the RICO statute is unfounded and unconstitutional.

Let's come together to fight for a fair criminal justice system.

Stop Cutting Our Public Libraries

NYC, 03.06.2009 00:09

If passed, this cut will result in the loss of 943 jobs, and severe reduction of library hours. These reductions would bring library operating hours to the lowest since the 1970’s.

California Court Upholds Prop 8; Thousands Take to the Streets in Response

United States, 02.06.2009 19:38

At 10am on Tuesday May 26th, in a 6-1 decision, the California Supreme Court's ruled in favor of Proposition 8 banning future same-sex marriages but upholding existing same-sex marriages. In the one dissenting opinion, Judge Moreno stated "This could not have been the intent of those who devised and enacted the initiative process. In my view, the aim of Proposition 8 and all similar initiative measures that seek to alter the California Constitution to deny a fundamental right to a group that has historically been subject to discrimination on the basis of a suspect classification, violates the essence of the equal protection clause of the California Constitution and fundamentally alters its scope and meaning."

Demonstrators took to the streets in response, drawing thousands to cities across California and elsewhere in the nation. Coverage from CA: Los Angeles & San Diego | Central CA & San Francisco Bay Area | | | Solidarity Protest Coverage: Washington, DC | Seattle, WA | Rochester, NY

Following the verdict, a rally for national LGBT equality was held on Saturday, May 30. The campaign was designated as "Meet in the Middle for Equality" and began with a symbolic march from Selma, CA to the steps of City Hall in downtown Fresno (see photo). Read More

"Medicare for ALL!" Single Payer Health Care Speak-Out Reportback

Rochester, 02.06.2009 19:08

On May 30, 2009, a group of 450 people gathered for a Speak Out hosted by Progressive Democrats of Genesee Valley. It provided a platform for people to learn about single payer and to show support for HR 676, the Medicare for all House bill.

There was a panel consisting of Congressman Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary committee and author of HR 676, Congressman Eric Massa, representing NY 29th legislative district, Mimi Kennedy, actress and the National head of Progressive Democrats of America and Dr. Theodore Brown, Professor at University of Rochester in the Department of History, Community and Preventive Medicine and Medical Humanities and moderated by Jeff Cohen, Founder of FAIR and endowed chair and director of Park center for Independent Medical/Journalism Department in the School of Communications at Ithaca College. Each panel member spoke for a few minutes and then answered questions from the audience.

Silenced but not Silent! Leading advocates of single payer health care -- "Medicare for All" --blacked out by corporate media

Rochester, 02.06.2009 18:08

Last evening's Town Hall Meeting on Single Payer Health Care — "Medicare for All" — sponsored by Progressive Democrats of Genesee Valley and numerous other progressive groups should have been the lead story in every media outlet last night and today. I'm a nurse, not a journalist, but I can think of many stories that reporters should have been eager to capture:

1. Health care is a leading concern, with public opinion polls saying that more than eighty percent of us believe there is a need for fundamental change in the U.S system.

2. John Conyers, Jr. visited Rochester. Did anyone try to get an interview with the venerable civil rights leader, member of the U.S. House of Representatives since the 1970’s?

3. The Democrat and Chronicle is read, and TV news viewed, in several Congressional districts. Eric Massa, one of the newest members of Congress, is a vocal proponent of HR 676. The Progressive Caucus endorses the legislation, yet our own Louise Slaughter has not signed on. Why? Could it have something to do with money from health insurers and HMO’s?

4. Most importantly, the town hall meeting offered a chance for journalists to provide substantive descriptions and comparisons of the various health care reform proposals being put forward.

Manipulation - How Markets Really Work

Boston, 02.06.2009 14:09

Wall Street's mantra is that markets move randomly and reflect the collective wisdom of investors. The truth is quite opposite. The government's visible hand and insiders control markets and manipulate them up or down for profit - all of them, including stocks, bonds, commodities and currencies. It's financial fraud or what former high-level Wall Street insider and former Assistant HUD Secretary Catherine Austin Fitts calls "pump and dump," defined as "artificially inflating the price of a stock or other security through promotion, in order to sell at the inflated price," then profit more on the downside by short-selling. "This practice is illegal under securities law, yet it is particularly common," and in today's volatile markets likely ongoing daily.

SEIU's "Shock and Awe" Campaign in Fresno

San Francisco Bay Area, 02.06.2009 07:10

June 1st is the first day of a highly contested union election for 10,000 homecare workers in Fresno County who are trying to leave the Washington, D.C.-based SEIU, a union that has been condemned by the AFL-CIO for using violence in inter-union conflicts. The stakes have never been higher for SEIU officials, who are desperately trying to stop a movement of nearly 100,000 healthcare workers in California who are organizing to quit SEIU and join the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).

PDX Está Presente: Resist Home Depot's prospecting in destruction of Patagonia's Rivers

Portland, 02.06.2009 04:27

Portland Represents: answering a call from International Rivers, requesting a stickering/photographing (Plus) campaign against Home Depot, which is prospecting on lumber from the "collateral damage" of Chile's destructive hydroelectric damming project.

The Chilean economic interests that promote damming Patagonia's Wild Rivers At Risk claim that dirty dams are the answer to Chile's climate change challenges. These dams would destroy forests and livelihoods, and the associated transmission lines would be the world's longest clearcut!

We are calling on The Home Depot to cancel contracts with the Matte Group (CMPC) and the Angelini Group (Arauco), and to stop being hypocritical about their promise to help customers be environmentally conscious consumers while defending the sales of products from interests that promote the flooding of native forests and the destruction of a delicate web of life.

Lawmakers in Oregon say No! to Real ID

Rogue Valley, 01.06.2009 18:42

On Friday, May 29th the Oregon State House passed Senate Bill 536 (SB0536) thanks to organizations such as ACLU of Oregon. The bill “Prohibits state from expending funds to comply with the federal Real ID Act 0f 2005 unless certain requirements are met.” The bill passed by a vote of 39-6. Oregon now joins eleven other states that have already passed laws rejecting Real ID. Ten additional states have passed resolutions urging Congress to repeal Real ID.

The passage of this bill is a good beginning but is not enough. The state of Oregon should reject Real ID entirely, not “unless certain requirements are met”.

New Yorkers Suffer Under Private Electric Company

NYC, 01.06.2009 18:09

Con Edison is a clear example that the mentality of “privatization and deregulation” has to go. Since it consolidated its private monopoly of power distribution, it has not operated in order to provide New Yorker’s with the electricity they need at a reasonable price or to provide its workers with a decent salary and benefits. Instead, Con Edison operates with the good of its shareholders in mind. As a result, New Yorkers are scraping to pay their bills, employees are losing benefits, and the public is being endangered, while executives and stockholders’ wealth is on the rise.

Rochester, 01.06.2009 04:25

On Tuesday, May 19, in solidarity with Amnesty International’s Global Day of Action for Troy Davis, Rochester’s Judicial Process Commission sponsored a noontime vigil on Exchange Street in front of the Hall of Justice. Approximately thirty people gathered with signs and t-shirts that denounce the inhumanity of the Death Penalty and call for justice for one Georgia Death Row prisoner in particular, Troy Davis. High school and college students, long-time human rights activists, and concerned citizens were present and for twenty minutes in downtown Rochester, they stood with demonstrators from around the world that included 43 states and five continents to say Justice Matters for this innocent man.

Rochester Rallys for Same-Sex Marriage Rights

Rochester, 01.06.2009 04:25

Fifty-plus people held a rally at Rochester's Liberty Pole and then marched in the rain to City Hall and back in support of the right of same-sex couples to marry. The event was organized by the International Socialist Organization and intended to coincide with the ruling by California's Supreme Court on the validity of that state's Proposition 8, which took away the right to marry from same-sex couples. The California court announced earlier in the day it would uphold Proposition 8, rescinding those rights for Californians. The original plan for the gathering was for a protest if Prop 8 was upheld, but plans were changed at the last minute to hold a march to City Hall. Last Sunday, Mayor Robert Duffy published an essay in support of same-sex marriage rights. The time was right to show that citizens supported him.

Counter-Recruitment Activists Organize to Protect Student Privacy

Rochester, 01.06.2009 04:25

For several months, the Rochester City School District has been considering changing it's policy to not send student information to military recruiters unless parents explicitly consent to it being sent out. The board has discussed the issue at several meetings, with no clear consensus - although virtually every speaker from the community has opposed changing the policy (reportback #1, reportback #2).

Activists have been heavily organizing to keep the current policy that protects students. On Wednesday, they organized a Teach-in build skills and hone strategies for protecting privacy. They followed that up by showing up in force at Thursday's school board meeting to oppose changes to the current policy, joining an even larger force of community opposition to teacher lay-offs. Mary Adams gives a reportback on the board's discussion of the policy change.
