Social Divides Widen Amid America's DTV Conversion

Chicago, 12.06.2009 06:08

On Friday, June 12, all high-power analog television broadcasting in the United States ends, to be replaced by digital television. The conversion, postponed from an original deadline on February 17, stands to disproportionately affect communities that are poor, elderly, and don't speak English — possibly as many as four percent of Americans (roughly 12 million people) that use analog TV, down from perhaps twenty percent (about 50 million) in recent years.

Despite the ramifications of the DTV conversion along strata of class and language, many "leftists have 'tended to dismiss the DTV issue as a kind of pseudo problem because they tended to be antitelevision to begin with.'" Still, television remains the leading source of news and information among Americans. And in many poorer and rural communities which have been written off by newspapers, and who sit on the "other side" of the digital divide, TV is (or was) all that's left for many Americans — compounded with problems involving emergency access, funding, and technical assistance.

Community activists across America have worked to help to reduce the divide, while highlighting the social and economic factors that have exacerbated the divide. Locally, Chicago Indymedia, Chicago Media Action, and the Benton Foundation have highlighted DTV-related issues, noting that despite progress in recent months, potentially hundreds of thousands of Chicagoans could fall further behind.

Councilmember Gennaro Protested for supporting Gas Drilling

NYC, 11.06.2009 19:39

As the controversy about whether or not the State and Federal governments would allow unconventional gas drilling in upstate rural areas heats up, dozens of environmental activists rallied outside of City Hall on Wednesday in an animated protest to urge Councilmember Gennaro - the Council's Environmental Protection Committee Chair - to follow through on his declared opposition to gas drilling statewide. Meanwhile, Congressman Hinchey on the federal level introduced similar gas drilling friendly legislation that would leave the state's food and water supplies vulnerable to devastation.

Lockdown at Schumer's office protests "free trade massacre" in Peru

NYC, 11.06.2009 17:39

Activists charge Schumer with complicity in the murder of dozens of indigenous Peruvians killed over the weekend in a wave of repression against indigenous people engaged in nonviolent protest against the US-Peru Free Trade Agreement. Peruvian President Alan Garcia has used the FTA as a pretext to institute new laws that usher in an unprecedented wave of extractive industries – expanding logging, oil and gas drilling, mining, and destructive agriculture into the Amazon Rainforest.

Hickey-Freeman Will Not Be Liquidated! Schumer Gives Support to Local Workers

Rochester, 11.06.2009 07:07

June 9, 2009—Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) voiced his support for suit manufacturing workers at a labor rally organized by Workers United at Hickey-Freeman. Chicago-based Hartmarx, the parent company of Hickey-Freeman, is in bankruptcy after bailed-out bank Wells Fargo & Co.—Hartmarx's main creditor and recipient of a $25 billion taxpayer bailout—drastically cut the company's credit line. Wells Fargo has threatened to liquidate both companies' assets, which would cut some 5,000 jobs. In response, workers from both Hartmarx and Hickey-Freeman have voted to occupy their work places should Wells Fargo make good on its threat.

While Schumer and Workers United union members spoke on the inside, community members, union members of the Industrial Workers of the World, and Rochester Indymedia were offering support on the outside after being denied entrance to the plant.

Seattle Homeless Camp Faces Eviction

Seattle, 11.06.2009 05:08

Nickelsville arrives by truck

Early Saturday morning the homeless residents of Nicklesville left Renton. Shortly after 5 AM in the morning, they arrived at a place near where they had been kicked out last September. As a northwest mist greeted the day, they unloaded three trucks of camping gear and personal belongings. The tent city is in South Seattle near 2nd Avenue SW and Highland Park Way SW. Rather than settle on city land, they are camping on state land. Will the state and Governor Gregoire show more mercy than Seattle Mayor Nickels has? Time will tell. The Nicklesville folks want to build a shanty town on the unused state land. They are asking supporters to contact the Governor and the State Transportation Secretary.
Around 11:00 AM today - 6/9/09 - the Washington State Department of Transportation posted Nickelsville with Official WSDOT Notices that, in their opinion, we are trespassing. That's the bad news. The good news is that there has not YET been any time and date set for forcible expulsion, or d-day.

Remembering the Stonewall Rebellion in this week's Socialist WebZine

Boston, 10.06.2009 14:09

The Stonewall Inn, a gay and lesbian neighborhood bar with a large number of African American and Latino patrons, was also well-known as a safe space for those who did not conform to gender norms: butch lesbians, effeminate gay men, and transsexual and transgendered persons before the terms were in popular use. All of these factors brought the police to Stonewall in 1969 for the purpose of illegally raiding the bar, and arresting its occupants -- an action not unknown in New York in the 1960s....

llinois Torture Publicized with Ecological Art: Artists promote critical prison message with mud stencils

Chicago, 10.06.2009 05:09

From the newswire: "On Saturday, June 6th in Chicago, local artists partnered with the Tamms Year Ten coalition to protest state-sanctioned torture at the [Tamms] supermax prison in Southern Illinois. And they did it with mud.

"Artists from Chicago and Milwaukee engaged in a non-destructive type of public messaging called “mud-stenciling.” More than 30 volunteers stenciled their message “End Torture in Illinois” in the afternoon on walls and sidewalks around the city [while] offering fact-sheets about TAMMS supermax prison to curious pedestrians. The teams [placed mud stencils in] spots such as Navy Pier, The Chicago Art Institute, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Jane Adams Hull House, Hyde Park Art Center, the Logan Square skate park, the Chicago Zoo, DePaul University, as well as sidewalks, underpass walls, and numerous other locations.

With the arrest of racist radio host Hal Turner, it's probably not a bad idea for the public to take a deeper look into the dots connecting the extremism in the words of underground shock jock racism and the entertainment talking heads of mainstream media. Hal Turner and Sean Hannity share more than just a passing connection.

The CMU I reside in, at USP Marion, received its first prisoner in May 2008 and when I arrived, held about 17 men, the majority of whom were Muslim. Currently, the unit has 25, with a capacity of 52 cells. In April 2009, we received seven new people, all of whom were from the CMU at FCI Terre Haute. The unit is overwhelmingly Muslim with 18 men identifying as such. Most, but not all of the prison, have so-called terrorism cases. According to a BoP spokesperson, the unit "will not be limited to inmates convicted of terrorism-related cases through all of the prisoners fit that description."

Members of the so-called "Wolf Pack" Gang Proclaiming Innocence

Rochester, 09.06.2009 23:08

June 5, 2009—On Monday, April 27, 2009 Rochester Police Department (RPD) arrested a group of residents of the Beechwood neighborhood on Rochester’s east side. According to local media accounts of the incident, 21 people were arrested but a total of 24 individuals are being charged with belonging to an organized crime group called the Chain Gang, also known as the Wolf Pack.

They are being prosecuted under the ‘Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act’, a federal statue also called the RICO act. RICO was intended to eradicate organized crime by attacking the sources of its revenue, such as syndicated gambling or bookmakers. The statute imposes both criminal imprisonment from 20 years to life, depending on the racketeering activity involved and civil liability including damages, costs and attorneys fees for persons who engage in certain prohibited acts. According to Jeffrey Rodefer, a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Nevada, the statute provides “new weapons of unprecedented scope for an assault upon organized crime and its economic roots.”

But individuals arrested and their supporters are saying there is no such organization called the Chain Gang or the Wolf Pack. In a community meeting Thursday at 345 Parsells Avenue members of Activists Against Racism Movement (AARM) insist that there was no basis or foundation to support racketeering charges filed against those arrested. “The use of the RICO statute in these arrests is absolutely unfounded and unconstitutional,” the group said in a statement. Shell Forced to Pay $15.5M for Complicity in Execution of Activist Ken Saro-wiwa

DC, 09.06.2009 18:10

After legal battles lasting nearly fourteen years, oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has been forced to pay a $15.5 million out-of-court settlement. Plaintiffs from the Ogoni region of the Niger Delta have successfully held Shell accountable for complicity in human rights atrocities committed against the Ogoni people in the 1990s, including the execution of writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. The legal action is one of the few cases brought under the U.S. Alien Tort Statute that have been resolved in favor of the plaintiffs. The settlement includes establishment of a $5 million trust to benefit local communities in Ogoni.

Dr. Tiller Memorial at Federal Courthouse in Urbana

United States, 08.06.2009 19:38

On Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m., a memorial was held at the federal courthouse in Urbana to correspond with the funeral of Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas and similar memorials that were held across the country. On Memorial Day, Tiller was gunned down at his church by an anti-abortion activist in what many are calling a vicious act of domestic terrorism. In Urbana, a group of approximately 25 people gathered to honor Tiller and take a stand for women’s reproductive rights.

Growing up in Wichita, I remember the summer of 1991 when Operation Rescue kicked off its so-called “Summer of Mercy” by protesting Dr. Tilller’s clinic. Tiller had become a lightning rod for the movement for his providing of late-term abortions. At the church where my now wife (who was then and remains pro-choice) was attending, youth were being recruited to lie down in the road and block traffic along Kellogg Avenue.
