"Stand With Us" IPride Exploiting Gay Issues, Protested by Queer Activists

San Francisco Bay Area, 19.06.2009 02:09

On June 11, a group of queer activists from Israel (backed by Palestinian-Israeli LGBTQI co-operative preparation) came to protest the cynical use of gay rights by a right wing American group called "Stand with Us" (SWU). The activists disrupted an event called I-Pride, organized by SWU, exploiting queer issues to support Israel's existence as an apartheid state and its occupation over Palestinians. The activists also pointed out SWU collaboration with homophobic organizations such as Christians United For Israel, and homophobic individuals such as John Hagee who has stated in the past that Hurricane Katrina happened for the city's "sinful homosexual rally." SWU's presentations of all Palestinians as killers, and their pressure to fire academics who are critical of Israel, were also denounced.

Detention protests met with brutal assaults

United Kingdom, 18.06.2009 17:09

A mass hunger strike by families detained at Yarl's Wood detention centre in Bedfordshire has been met with violent assaults on men, women and children by Serco security guards who mange the prison on behalf on the UK Border Agency. The detainees started hunger strike on Monday and staged a sit-in in the corridor over their inhumane conditions.

Meanwhile in Brook House, the newly opened detention centre at Gatwick airport, a 'disturbance' broke out on 12th June and a fire was set by rioting detainees in the exercise area causing some damage.

A solidarity protest outside the Serco's offices (22 Hand Court, Holborn, WC1V 6JF) has been called by No Borders London in support of the Yarl's Wood hunger strikers on Friday, 19th June, from 12noon. Activists from the Tyneside Community Action for Refugees (TCAR) gathered outside government offices in Newcastle on Wednesday to protest against racism and all immigration prisons.

Holding on in East Harlem and Points West, North and South

NYC, 18.06.2009 15:09

“Neoliberalism is the root cause of rampaging gentrification and displacement, from New York to New Orleans to Atenco, Mexico.” Keen observers of political-economy would agree with this assessment from Zapatista-inspired community activists in Spanish Harlem, who recently organized an “encuentro” with similar minded Black and Asian activists. All concluded that the issue is bigger than Harlem: “This displacement is created by the greed, ambition and violence of a global empire of money that seeks to take total control of all the land, labor and life on earth.”

HATE crimes commited Saturday June 13th

Portland, 18.06.2009 05:39

It is with a heavy heart and a bruised face that I write this letter but I think it's important that my experience be known.

In the early morning hours of Sunday June 14th, I was the victim of a hate crime on the corner of NW 6th and Couch. This happened outside of Casey's, a gay bar where I am a dj and it was 2:30 in the morning, after the bar had closed.

When I came outside to make my way home, I saw that a friend of mine was talking with the Portland Police. She had been punched in the face by a man who had been spouting homophobic remarks at her and another friend of mine. Her nose was broken and the police had arrived to investigate this crime. While I was watching this interaction, a group of men approached the scene also shouting homophobic remarks. I walked up to them to ask them to leave the area and the next thing I remember, I was on the ground with my mouth bleeding. I didn't really know or understand what had happened. I had been punched in the mouth and knocked out.

The Portland Police department, who was on the scene, was completely negligent to my situation. They talked to the guy who said I had started it, yet there wasn't a scratch on him and I was the one on the ground bleeding. As I was sitting on the ground, the police officers refused to let a friend of mine bring me ice for my face, threatening to arrest him if he attempted to approach me.

Creative Aging Conference Gets a San Francisco Treat

San Francisco Bay Area, 18.06.2009 02:09

Carrying on a long-standing tradition of civic contribution and combatting corporate greed, the Raging Grannies made a brief appearance between Bay Area gigs at a national aging conference on June 15 in San Francisco. The activist Grannies took up the conference themes of "creative aging" and "civic engagement" in a performance that included parodies the Grannies wrote themselves. Their skit, "Fight the For-Profits" was an urgent appeal to conference participants to join the movement against powerful special interests in the insurance and pharmaceutical industries and help pass a single-payer national health care program.

Protesters Voice Concern for Indigenous Massacre in Peru

Boston, 18.06.2009 02:09

A coalition of 13 grassroots organizations in Boston delivered a letter today to the Peruvian Consulate to raise concerns over the military and police aggression against a peaceful protest of indigenous people in Bagua, Peru. On June 5th, police forces opened fire on a protest of more than thirty thousand people, representing several indigenous groups, who had held a 57-day strike to contest the enactment of new laws that would open indigenous lands to the exploitation of their natural resources. Peruvian Massacre of Indigenous Rights Protesters

San Francisco Bay Area, 18.06.2009 01:39

On June 5th, Peruvian national police attacked a roadblock near the city of Bagua in northwestern Peru, killing at least sizty people. Several thousand indigenous protesters had been blocking the main road to protest measures the government has taken to sell their ancestral land to energy companies. On Tuesday June 16th, over 30 people converged outside the Peruvian Consulate in San Francisco to amplify their concerns with the Peruvian and US Government's complacency in protecting indigenous rights

Albany: Queers Beat Nazi Ass

Portland, 17.06.2009 21:39

We found 41 year old "Spanish Blue Blood," a self proclaimed "stormtrooper" of the National Socialist Movement and senior moderator of the NSM's official party forum, sitting on a bus bench waiting for a crew that never showed... [And beat his ass]
Gang of queers force Nazi out of Albany Pride march.
The second he saw us he split for the street
but didn't get far til we caught up with him and gave him what he deserved.

"Spanish Blue Blood," who lives in the Colonie area of Albany, had been trying for weeks to draw up enough people to stage a counter protest of Albany's Capital Pride march but apparently he couldn't even get a single person out. He recently celebrated his 41st birthday on June 9th so we delivered some belated gifts-in the form of tightly
balled fists.

PacNW democrats love war

Portland, 17.06.2009 20:38

Not one democrat in U.S. House from Oregon & Washington voted against war supplemental.
Democrats in Oregon & Washington obviously are devoted to failed wars, are opposed to exit strategies, dearly love the current unreformed IMF, which ruins debtor nations, & support the totally unrelated & ridiculously inept cash-for-clunkers program. And of course these congresspeeps will dig deeply into their own pockets to come up with $100,000,000,000 for the war supplemental mishmash approved today. How much more in September, jerks!

Global Call to Action: Reclaim the "Spirit of Seattle" on December 5, 2009

Portland, 17.06.2009 20:38

A decade ago, tens of thousands of people converged in Seattle, Washington to protest the ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization. Directly confronting some of the planet's most powerful corporations, governments and security forces, those activists made history by successfully derailing the WTO's expansionist agenda.
Today, we find ourselves in the midst of the worst economic and environmental crises in generations.

The same corporate interests activists confronted in Seattle are attempting to exploit these crises in order to concentrate their own power. We need to fight back. It is time to reclaim the "Spirit of Seattle," come together as affected communities and take control over the policy decisions that affect our economic and ecological well-being.

Justin Solondz Has Been Apprehended in China

Portland, 17.06.2009 20:38

Environmental activist Justin Solondz has been apprehended in China and has been taken into custody. Justin was named as one of the Green Scare defendants in the University of Washington Genetic Engineering Research arson and was named as a codefendant of Briana Waters, who refused to cooperate, went to trial and was sentenced to 6 years in prison. Justin has been listed as a fugitive by the FBI since the UW indictment was issued several years ago. It is unclear at this time whether Justin will be extradited back to the U.S, and/or when such a transfer would occur. Stay tuned for more updates as they become known.

Report on Hella fun Pedalpalooza / Portland Rising Tide no I-5 Expansion Ride!

Portland, 17.06.2009 20:38

"Twelve Lanes? That's Insane!" chanted 70 Portlanders as they rallied at Mississippi Avenue, just south of Mason Avenue Sunday evening. The rally was accompanied by a mobile bike-carted sound system, live musicians, and a huge banner unfurled from the roof of a nearby construction site reading "More Lanes=More Cars=More Climate Change. No CRC!" The protest followed a "Pedalpalooza" bike ride earlier in the afternoon - organized by Portland Rising Tide which toured areas of North Portland impacted by the current Columbia River Crossing (CRC) proposal, talking to neighborhood activists opposed to the project.

WAMM Walk Against Weapons Goes On Despite the Rain

United States, 17.06.2009 02:37

90 people walked raising awareness "drop by drop" The rains came... and so did the walkers! After gathering in the parking lot at Bakers Square and registering, we had a short rally and about ninety walkers set off on the three miles to Alliant Techsystems. The rain was relatively heavy, but our spirits were high and we received many friendly honks and waves. We had a big WAMM Walk Against Weapons sign leading and many individuals wore Walk Against Weapons signs on their backs or around their necks; it was quite an impressive sight... in the rain.

Woman Against Military Madness and AlliantACTION organized the fundraising walk for WAMM from Bakers Square, around the Eden Prairie Shopping Center, to ATK's corporate headquarters. Thousands of suburbanites witnessed this year's WALK AGAINST WEAPONS. Read More & Photos | WAMM Online
