"SING OUT FOR SINGLE PAYER" JULY 7 ASHLAND

Rogue Valley, 05.07.2009 14:40

SING OUT FOR SINGLE PAYER ROAD SHOW TRAVELS FROM BORDER TO BORDER JULY 2-27, 2009

Frustrated that patients, nurses and doctors have been largely excluded from the debate, Anne Feeney and almost four dozen professional musicians decided to launch the Sing Out for Single Payer Road Show. How can our health care system be improved when the only players at the table are huge hospital chains, big pharma and insurance companies? Why should we be surprised when their best ideas to save money involve eliminating patients’ right to sue incompetent and negligent doctors? So Feeney and her colleagues are taking the debate to college campuses, church halls, small theaters, union halls and public parks throughout California, Oregon and Washington.

6:00 PM, JULY 7 in Ashland
Sing out for Single Payer Road Show with Jack Williams, Anne Feeney, Jason Luckett, Raina Rose, Trevor Smith, Andrew Pressman, Pat Dodd, Citizens' Band and a special guest!
Unitarian Center
87 Fourth Street
Ashland, OR 97520
Price: $10-20 donations suggested, no one turned away

Chichester protest against Nigel Lawson

United Kingdom, 05.07.2009 09:09

THE REAL agenda behind Nigel Lawson and his book pooh-poohing climate change will be exposed by campaigners on Friday July 10. They will be gathering from 5.30pm outside St John's Chapel, St John's Road, Chichester, where the former Chancellor under Margaret Thatcher will be giving a talk as part of the "Chichester Festivities". Lawson is not a scientist and it is clear that his attack on the environmental movement is politically motivated and stems from his key role in the world of neo-liberal politics.

Rest In Peace Bonnie Tinker

Portland, 04.07.2009 23:39

Bonnie Tinker, a well-loved and much-respected Portland activist, was killed on Thursday, July 2, in an accident on the campus of Virginia Tech University. She was attending a conference of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker). Bonnie was killed while bicycling on campus when a Mack dump truck turned into her.

Bonnie was an indefatigable and irrepressible peace and justice activist, who "spoke Truth to Power" about issues that impacted all of us -- and some of us more than others. She was a Quaker, a Seriously Pissed Off Granny and the Executive Director of Love Makes a Family. Bonnie's life witnessed the Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community and Equality.

Memories: "For those who don't know, Bonnie was one of the rockin grandmothers who, among many other things, stood outside the army recruiter's office for months on end, demonstrating against the war. Remember when the office was decked out in hand prints of blood? Bonnie also founded a shelter for women escaping domestic violence, and stood up for all oppressed people."

--- "A few years back, she took part in a Gay Pride demo against the military, in which the theme was, "DO Ask, DO Tell, DON'T JOIN." She fought for equal rights and for the right to marry for lesbians and gays, and she fought for the right of women not to be bludgeoned and beaten by the men in their lives."

--- "Everyone who came into contact with Bonnie became a better person because of her."

--- "I met Bonnie over a decade ago when I was an organizer for the Oregon Farmworker Union. Unbelievable, a stunning loss..."

--- "Bonnie was an inspiration for me. I did attend some of the Grannies' demonstrations, and the court session, which they WON! I hope there will be a peace tribute for her. Let it be posted. This is so sad."

Anti-Corporate Pride Dance Party Busted By Police

Seattle, 04.07.2009 20:09

These kids wanted to put the "punk" back in "punctuality" so they promptly began at 11:55pm. The first song was by Michael Jackson, the crowd of more than 250 people went crazy. They were kicking up dust and yelling. They had been enduring a costly, corporate 21+ pride for two whole nights, this was there moment, their time to shine.

Seattle, 04.07.2009 20:09

June 29, 2009 -- This week Indymedia presents a short piece on police brutality by Tajuan LaBee. Prompted by the beating of a 15 year old girl by two Seattle-area jailers, he asks if teachers and nurses are not allowed to beat up people, then why do we tolerate violence by cops?

Then we visit the Judas Goat, a reference to military recruiters.

We round out the show with two pieces from the newly released The Leader #17. (1) Break The Cuba Blockade, created by Steve Anderson, examines the Pastors For Peace efforts to deliver supplies to Cuba. (2) Seattle Out and Proud by Tacoma Joe LaSac is just in time for Pride season activities.

Native Hawaiians Oppose HR 2314

United States, 04.07.2009 11:37

From the newswire: A growing number of Native Hawaiians and their allies are opposing adoption of the newest version of the “Akaka Bill,” now called the “Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2009.” For nine years, previous versions of this bill have also been strongly opposed by Native Hawaiians. Back in the islands, some call it "Fakehood" . . .

However, as Native Hawaiians and other descendents of Hawaiian Nationals (descendents of citizens of the Kingdom of Hawai'i) increasingly learn the truth behind the occupation of their stolen country, yet another version of the pernicious "Akaka Bill" rears it's ugly head . . . Honduras: 4 Tage nach dem Staatsstreich

Germany, 04.07.2009 10:39

Homeless Organize, Stand Together and Win

United States, 03.07.2009 16:38

On Monday June 29th, the City of Grand Junction tried to pass two emergency ordinances outlawing "soliciting," also known as flying a sign or spanging. What stopped the city from moving forward with these laws was a strong, large, and loud group of homeless people and younger radicals.

No one came to support the law, and over a hundred people came to oppose it. Solidarity Not Charity (our FNB out here in GJ) provided food and water serving on the city halls lawn. Live tunes were provided by, local band Fast Food Kings, and out-of-towners Chicken Little, who were hell a cool about relocating from the infoshop to city hall to play. Read more>>

PDX Queer Town Hall

Portland, 02.07.2009 22:40

PDX QUEER TOWN HALL
7pm Tuesday, July 7th, 2009
The Q Center (4115 N Mississippi)

ABOUT
Over PDX Pride weekend 2009, multiple members of our community experienced harassment, violence & queer-bashing, as well as inadequate police response. A group of us who were pretty directly involved in the incidents, came together to create space to talk about what happened, and move toward some positive & empowering solutions; thus the Town Hall concept was born. We see this Queer Town Hall as a space to share our experiences & resources, and to catalyze action that can help keep ourselves and our communities safer in the future. The meeting itself will begin with a short introduction, followed by breakout groups which will be spread around the room. This is an opportunity to hear about ideas that are currently in the works, to get involved, and share!

Cascadia Trans’ & Womyn’s Action Camp 2009 Reportback

Portland, 02.07.2009 22:40

This year Cascadia made home to the now annual Trans & Womyn's Action Camp.
Cascadia hasn't hosted a camp of this sort in a few years, unfortunately. This camp alone brought out so many new faces and introduced them to the radical environmental movement that we decided it must continue out here, in coordination with other Trans and Womyn's spaces that correlate with future Earth First! Rendezvous.
Taking place in workshops spaces such as Learn First! and Share Garden, the schedule was widely diverse with issues of forest defense techniques, tactics of non-violent direct action, strategic campaigning, supporting mental health wellness & burnout, gender identity, sex work, DIY reproductive health (where many women saw a cervix for the first time!), how to call out oppressive behavior in a constructive way, etc. There was a large focus on anti-oppression by having three unique AO scheduled workshops, with additions of an impromptu critical discussion on privilege and oppression in the larger EF! movement, which eventually turned into a discussion about environmental racism and environmental justice. And prior to that there was an in-depth discussion on how to incorporate the safer space of TWAC- trans-inclusiveness, solidarity, and anti-oppression- at the upcoming EF! Round River Rendezvous, which eventually turned into trying to rally folks to attend the EF! RRR.

Beyond having some really amazing & critical workshops, we also had lots of fun ones!

Coos Bay; Public Comments on Jordan Cove EIS

Rogue Valley, 02.07.2009 05:40

Here is an online listing of the comments from members of the public regarding the Jordan Cove corporation's planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility planned for the north spit of Coos Bay, OR.

In addition to risks from a severe seismic event on the Cascadia Subduction Zone, other risks include loss of eelgrass beds from dredging to allow the LNG tankers passage. Eelgrass is the base of the river's estuary food pyramid and loss of eelgrass beds from excess dredging would result in loss of fisheries..

Community Building and Networking

Rochester, 02.07.2009 05:37

On Sunday, June 28th two entities—Activists Against Racism Movement and Down In the Dirt Productions—pooled their ideas, time, and resources to create a venue to unite local community members with one another and with grassroots organizations, local political candidates, and small businesses in the Greater Rochester area. From progressive Democrats to radical students, performance artists to published authors, STD educators to crime preventers, the wealth of collective expertise shared at the Main St. Armory was rich indeed.

An indymedia correspondent was able to catch up with some of the organizers and participants of the day's event to discuss the importance of building strong communities.

Murdering thug, William Bergin does jail time

Portland, 02.07.2009 00:39

Former Sandy Cop, and murdering, stalking, drunk driving, thug, William Bergin plead guilty to a very reduced charge last Thursday: From the original indictment by a (not so) grand jury, for felony identity theft, first-degree official misconduct and use of an invalid driver's license, he was allowed by the infamous John Foote (DA for Clackamas County), to plead guilty to misdemeanor "official Misconduct," and to do the perp walk to jail for a very harsh sentence: twenty four freakin hours in jail, no doubt in the VIP suite. WTF?

Mr. Bergin, for those who do not remember, is one of two (protect and serve) officers from Clackamas County, who, finding a badly burned, injured, naked (clothes burned off his body) and totally unarmed, "catatonic" according to their statements, Fouad Kaady, could think of no way to help him, so they tasered him until their alter penises were completely discharged of electricity, and then pumped five shots into his body.

Post Let Live Demonstrations Report Back

Portland, 02.07.2009 00:39

Le Pigeon, at SE 8th & Burnside, and Sel Gris, at SE 18th & Hawthorne, weren't expecting 50+ activists to roll up on Saturday night to call them out on grotesque animal abuses. Charged chanting and severe shaming went non-stop for almost an hour at each foie gras restaurant Saturday night. Force-feeding geese and ducks until they die is a cruel tradition for a disgusting delicacy of despair. You can do what you want, I'm going to act to remove foie gras from menus and markets whenever possible.

Dr. Eliott Spindel was cooling out in his Lake Oswego castle on Sunday night when around 40 demonstrators, most with their identities concealed behind bandannas and hoodies, sent him vocal hell for a half hour. Next, Ungar Furs owner Horst Grim was paid a visit all the way in Happy Valley where the defenders of fur bearers raised an uproar for another 30 minutes. Just after the activists drove away in a bio-diesel bus named "Cool", a cop cited a legal observer for littering when a piece of video camera tape wrapper was accidentally dropped. Otherwise they were as kind as defenders of animal abusers and greedy corporate capitalism could be.

Racist Activity in the NW District

Portland, 01.07.2009 23:39

Racist propaganda found
Recently in the NW district there have been overtly racist stickers being put on signs, posts, newspaper dispensers, phone booths, etc. The stickers are for a group or individual called WILD (White Identity Love Defense). Some stickers have a picture of a tiger, and read, "WILD Portland," while others simply state, "White Identity." However, this weekend a new variety that reads, "Resist The Jews" was seen, so be on the lookout, not just for these, but any new variety of racist propaganda. The heavy concentration of the stickers has been on NW 21st and 23rd avenues. Furthermore, they have been quickly replaced once taken down. Some of these stickers have a website on them. The website itself is not much more than a hub with links to other sites, however the sites that the creator linked to is cause for concern. Some are anti-Semitic, some bemoan immigration (not merely undocumented immigration, but all immigration that "threatens a white majority."), and one is to Stormfront, the leading far-right forum whose members have celebrated such recent tragedies as the murder of Dr. Tiller in Kansas.

Columbia River Crossroads: info on the Columbia River Crossing

Portland, 01.07.2009 23:39

A 10 lane bridge, while still too big, would be preferable to the current 12 lane concept, and there are signs that a smaller bridge might become the new concept
One of the things that jumped out at me from the fact sheets I got at the recent Columbia River Crossing "open house", (last Wednesday), was a projection from a sheet titled, "Traffic Effects of 8, 10 and 12 Lane Scenarios." This sheet compares the "local streets impacted by I-5 backups" in a 10 lane and 12 lane bridge scenario. In the 12 lane scenario, of course, there are no local streets impacted by an I-5 backup, either in Portland or Vancouver.

But in the 10 lane scenario, there are six streets or highways that are impacted. All but one of them are in Vancouver. So this really is a Clark County thing. The new bridge must be as large as possible so drivers from the northernmost reaches of Clark County, and probably beyond, can get to Portland in time for...whatever.

"5th Annual Old Time American Flag Burn" Sparks a Reaction

Santa Cruz, CA, 01.07.2009 22:09

For the 5th year running, the burning of American flags will take place on Friday, July 3rd at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz. Organizers say they raise the burning flag up as a sacred symbol representing their highest ideals as Americans, and that the "American Flag is so great a symbol that it represents the right to burn it."

Robert Norse comments, "Burning a flag in solidarity with the Honduran people on July 4th makes more sense to me than burning a flag as a celebration of the First Amendment. Divorcing flag-burning from its visceral ('Yanqui, go home!') content is a way of stripping the action of its force."
