The Drug War Comes to Eastern Fresno County

San Francisco Bay Area, 26.07.2009 02:09

A major operation to confiscate marijuana in eastern Fresno County is currently underway. Save Our Sierra (SOS) is, according to Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims, targeting growers who are affiliated with Mexican drug cartels. These growers, again according to Mims, are destroying public lands with their drug operations. When questioned, Mims would not name one Mexican drug cartel involved or say how many of them were active in growing marijuana in Fresno County. Skeptics think operation SOS is more about justifying bloated law enforcement budgets by scaring people into thinking that an environmental calamity is being perpetrated by violent Mexican drug cartels.

TENANTS PICKET SO-CALLED NONPROFIT SLUMLORD CENTRAL CITY CONCERN

Portland, 25.07.2009 18:39

Low-income and Sec. 8 tenants held an informational picket Friday morning at 10am (corporate media invited, none attended) against so-called nonprofit slumlord Central City Concern.

With signs that read, "Defend Tenant Rights" and "Greg Must Go!" tenant organizers picketed the $33,000,000 per year, so-called nonprofit landlord, Central City Concern. For a year, tenants have protested, written and organized against CCC management practices. CCC has persistent pest control problems in many buildings (cockroaches, mice, bedbugs), crime and kickbacks inside the buildings to/by CCC staff (prostitution, drugs, etc.), sexual harassment of tenants by managers (the "Greg" in question, above), and lack of transparency and accountability: it is an 'oral preference' that CCC board meetings outlaw tenants attending, or speaking at, CCC board meetings -- and the board minutes are secret.

Today's picket was prompted by the reinstatement after suspension of Greg Green, a building manager who is accused by tenants of sexual harassment of tenants, along with promoting/getting kickbacks on drugs and prostitution inside the buildings.

Anti-gay Catholic Group Spreads Hate, Bigotry

Rochester, 25.07.2009 16:08

From a few blocks away, only a narrow red banner could be seen swaying in the breeze at the intersection of Exchange Blvd. and Broad St. At a closer glance, one could make out six to eight well-dressed men, hair gelled to the side, yielding signs reading: "Honk for traditional marriage — 1 man + 1 woman" and "God's marriage = 1 man & 1 woman." But upon closer inspection—-in the form of prying questions posed to the individuals holding the signs—-a message frothed with hatred, bigotry, and a misreading of history was revealed.

Musicians, Activists and Politicians Tell the City: "No New Jail"

Seattle, 25.07.2009 04:21

Initiative I-100, also known as the "No New Jail" initiative, would have asked Seattle voters to require "the city to analyze successful and cost-effective jail diversion programs, address the effects of racial disparity within the incarceration system, work collaboratively with King County, and put the matter of a new jail to a public vote before a new jail could be constructed." Activists gathered 13,000 signatures to put the question of whether to build a new jail up for a vote, however, the campaign was 5,000 short of what was needed to qualify for the ballot. Despite this setback, Wednesday's rally against a new jail showed that the battle against Seattle's proposed new jail will not end.

По планам Сангйонг планирует сократить 36% рабочих мест, для возвращения к прибыльному производству. 15 сентября является крайней датой для реструктуризации автопроизводителя, во избежание ликвидации.

United States, 24.07.2009 21:37

The central thesis of Resistance Behind Bars is truly profound. In clear, non-academic language, Law argues that recent scholarship documenting and radically criticizing the increased incarceration rates and mistreatment of women prisoners "largely ignores what the women themselves do to change or protest these circumstances, thus reinforcing the belief that incarcerated women do not organize." Alongside academia, Law also harshly criticizes radical prison activists, arguing that "just as the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s downplayed the role of women in favor of highlighting male spokesmen and leaders, the prisoners' rights movement has focused and continues to focus on men to speak for the masses."

Police repression at Sequani demo

United Kingdom, 24.07.2009 19:39

Together with the Gateway to Hell Campaign a demo was organised outside Sequani Labs in Ledbury, Hereford. Vivisectors are always telling us British Labs are like hotels for animals so around 30 activists decided to highlight this disgusting lie by having an all day demo outside Sequani (a contract research organisation).

Firstly, police threatened an activist with arrest for using the term "puppy killers", saying it's offensive. Next they were trying to obtain details from lawful protesters, which angered them when they were refused. The demo was so succesful with such a good atmosphere that passers by started to pap their horns, this was met with blue lights by the police who followed them, issuing £30 fines to the motorists.

Public Option Healthcare Rally

Portland, 24.07.2009 19:09

A crowd of healthcare advocates converge[d] at Pioneer Courthouse Square, in support of a true public option for healthcare reform...to publicly declare their collective desire to see a Public Option healthcare reform package get passed by Congress and approved by President Barack Obama, by this fall or sooner.

There was a noticeable TV media presence, along with a galvanizing speech given by Jefferson Smith, current OR state legislator and founder of the Bus Project. Rally participants also shared tragic stories about their healthcare experiences, and got their message across to the energetic, diverse audience, despite not being allowed by local authorities to carry a bull-horn, in order to be properly heard. Rally participants also expressed concerns over Senator Ron Wyden's response to public option reform.

A vote is potentially expected sometime early next week, so the outcome has yet to be decided in Congress. Stay tuned.

Olympia Anarchists Sentenced for May Day 2008 “Riot”

Portland, 24.07.2009 19:09

On Tuesday, July 21st, 4 local individuals were sentenced for smashing bank windows, "rioting", and thwarting the arrests of others on May Day '08 in Olympia. The court house in Olympia was packed with supporters. A ring of police stood between us and the judge, smirking and chatting with the prosecutor during recess.

The actual crime of this whole affair is the persistence of the state, its apologizers and witless functionaries, and the daily coercion which becomes concentrated against individuals who show resistance. This was displayed nakedly as the prosecutor and judge showed special enmity for our companero, Bryan, by ordering 120 days in jail because he held his head up during the proceedings intended for humiliation.
