Employee Free Choice supporters blast Rite Aid with new report on company's union busting at West Coast warehouse

Boston, 12.08.2009 01:09

Supporters urging passage of the Employee Free Choice Act took to the streets on Monday to back warehouse workers at Rite Aid's massive distribution center in Lancaster, California. They released a new Jobs with Justice report about how management there has aggressively interfered in workers' freedom to form a union. The 12-page report: "Rite Aid, Oliver J. Bell & Associates, and the Case for the Employee Free Choice Act" documents how management employed union busters and violated labor laws. Last year, the National Labor Relations Board was prepared to charge Rite Aid with 49 unfair labor practice charges before the cases were settled out of court.

A Cure for an Ailing Economy: Taxing the Rich

Boston, 11.08.2009 14:09

Healthcare isn’t the only social ill in the U.S. that needs a serious remedy. The list is long and growing: state budget crises, unemployment, infrastructure, education, housing, food assistance, etc. These are all things that must be paid for, but the money seems to be in short supply. When a country is in as much debt as the U.S., – $12 trillion and counting — the tasks at hand seem all but unachievable. And this is exactly what many politicians would like you to believe.

Occupation at Williams' House Goes Into Second Night

United States, 10.08.2009 03:07

The occupation at Rosemary Williams' home at 3138 Clinton in Minneapolis enters its second night tonight. On Friday night, about 20 people, including Rosemary Williams herself, spent the night at the home after a no trespassing order was given earlier in the day. At a 4pm press conference this rainy and humid Saturday, the usual crowd of activists from MN PPEHRC and the Coalition for a People's Bailout (twitter feed), bolstered by growing support and donations of food and supplies from neighbors, rallied to the defense of Williams' home. Some pushed for GMAC to finally negotiate; others concluded that the only option left is to defend the house with their bodies.

The question now is what the Minneapolis Police will do next. A police spokesman has said they'll respond if a trespassing complaint is received - but what that means is anyone's guess. For now, says Rosemary, "We can't give up, that's the bottom line. We have to band together to make this happen." People will continue to occupy the house around the clock. RNC8 Supporters Face Down Anti-Activist Prosecutor at Chicago Visit

Chicago, 10.08.2009 02:09

The RNC8 is the name given to a group of eight political organizers who worked to help organize a grassroots response to the 2008 Twin Cities Republican National Convention, and who have faced dubious charges of terrorism under Minnesota's version of the Patriot Act in response to their political organizing. Activist efforts on behalf of the RNC8 has resulted in some of the charges being dropped though other charges still remain.

The struggle on behalf of the RNC8 extended its way to Chicago, when Susan Gaertner, the prosecutor who is pressing charges against the RNC8, came to Chicago to receive an award from the American Bar Asssociation. RNC8 supporters and activists protested Gaertner during the awards ceremony and stood to support the RNC8.

TMB.

Unbinding Pregnant Inmates

A July 9 rally, organized by the Correctional Association of New York, New York Civil Liberties Union and Women on the Rise Telling HerStory (WORTH), was held outside Governor Paterson's NYC office in support of state anti-shackling legislation (S.1290-A/A. 3373-A). The bill would ban the use of restraints on incarcerated women during labor and post-delivery recovery and limit the use of restraints during transportation to and from hospitals in New York. The demonstrators are hopeful that Paterson will sign the bill, which was passed unanimously by the New York State Senate and overwhelmingly by the state Assembly in May.

Lessons for Labor from Card Check's Death

NYC, 09.08.2009 00:39

Maybe you didn’t hear the news: Card Check — the key provision of the Employee Free Choice Act — is dead. You might not have gotten the message because U.S. labor “leaders” are remarkably silent on the issue. Not a peep.

The media, however, has the story right: the Democrats are now officially seeking a compromise, one that strips the bill of its essence — the right for workers to start a union by stating their intention to do so.

So why are most union leaders so quiet? No one likes to talk about their blunders, especially the colossal type. The defeat of Card Check is a mighty blow to labor, and admitting that your strategy failed to achieve it may cause others to question your authority.

The Indypendent Issue 138: Bacon as a Weapon of Mass Destruction

NYC, 09.08.2009 00:39

The Indypendent has found those missing weapons of mass destruction, and they’re sitting on your plates for dinner.

Arun Gupta, editor at the Indypendent, explores the intersection of government policy, factory farming, the boom in fast food and the manipulation of consumer taste as it relates to that tasty strip we call bacon.

Gupta writes: “It’s easy to dismiss this gonzo gastronomy as typical American excess best followed with a Lipitor chaser. Behind the proliferation of bacon offerings, however, is a confluence of government policy, factory farming, the boom in fast food and manipulation of consumer taste that has turned bacon into a weapon of mass destruction.

While bacon’s harmful effects were once limited to individual consumers, its production in vast porcine cities has become an environmental disaster. The system of industrialized hog (and beef and poultry) farming that has developed over the last 40 years turns out to be ideal for breeding novel strains of deadly pathogens such as the current pandemic of swine flu. If a new killer virus appears, like the Spanish Flu that killed tens of millions after World War I, factory farms will have played a central role in its genesis.

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) churn out cheap but flavorless meat. However, for the CAFOs to exist there must be demand for the product. That’s where the industrial food sector comes in. Chains like McDonald’s, Chili’s, Taco Bell, Applebee’s and Pizza Hut approach the tasteless, limp factory beef, pork and chicken as a blank canvas with which to create highly enticing, even addictive, foods by pumping it full of fat, salt, sugar, chemicals and flavorings.”

For the full article, check out “Bacon as a Weapon of Mass Destruction” below.

Also included in this issue of the Indypendent: a movie review of Public Enemies; David Wilson, the co-author of the Politics of Immigration, explains why the Honduran coup crisis is not about President Zeyala; and an article on the push to include Muslim holidays on the New York City school calendar.
