New Community Space Being Renovated!

Rochester, 26.08.2009 08:07

The Flying Squirrel Community Space is the multi-use community center being renovated at 285 Clarissa St., formerly the location of the historic Flower City Elks Lodge. Most of these renovations are being completed by volunteers, supported by donations from Rochester activists and community organizers. We expect a formal opening in late October.

Together, we want to provide a welcoming space that will cultivate and sustain long lasting relationships between artists, activists, and community members in Rochester so that we may work together to create positive social change. We are excited about the location because of its historic significance as a community center, its potential as a multi-use building, its central location as a gathering space for Rochester area groups, and the rich cultural history of the Clarissa St. neighborhood.

The Flying Squirrel will operate as a grassroots meeting space that will host: gallery space exhibiting regional art; community workshops and community classrooms; 'open-mic' and local poetry readings; practice spaces for musicians; live entertainment in the form of local musical performance, locally produced dance, and film screenings of locally produced work; community craft production and craft exhibits; small academic conference space and public lecture space; and a community kitchen — all this provided reliably and consistently at no cost or for a small donation.

Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7pm and on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 6pm.

Urban Farm Store Commodifies Movement

Portland, 26.08.2009 02:38

With a designer chicken in a circle and someone who clearly does his own media work the urban farm store is here. Great place for a bunch of hype. Overpriced chicks, feed, and 275$ for a chicken coop!!! I'm not kidding. No selection of seeds. Many good, solid glossy books on the subject of gardening. Go to the library for info, and buy "gardening west of the cascades" ANYWHERE ELSE.

"The backyard food and chicken raising craze has many societal and public policy implications for Portland. Explore them with the man at the center of the local chicken and homegrown food scene, Robert Litt, owner of Urban Farm Store." Local chicken and homegrown food scene? What? And my guy is claiming to be at the center of it? Excuse me?

Investment Giant BlackRock Divests from Leviev’s Africa-Israel Due to Israeli Settlements

NYC, 25.08.2009 20:38

In another stunning blow to Israeli settlement-builder Lev Leviev, the Israeli business magazine Globes Online has reported that BlackRock Inc., one of the world’s largest investment management firms, has divested from Leviev’s Africa-Israel Investments. The Globes article follows a similar report by the Norwegian news service Norwatch. The move comes after a nearly two-year long global boycott campaign of Leviev’s businesses that developed in response to the billionaire’s construction activities in at least four Israeli settlements in the Occupied West Bank, all of which violate international law, and his abusive labor practices in the diamond industry in Angola and Namibia.

September 19th: Call for Dialogue on Climate Justice

Seattle, 25.08.2009 04:18

World leaders will convene December 7, 2009 for a United Nations “Climate Change” conference. While this is not the first global meeting on climate issues, with the world's precarious and stark environmental and social condition this conference promises to be historic. When the member UN bodies come together this December, whose best interest will they represent? Will this be another predictable outcome of financial interests tweaking the treaty to extend, trade, and buy off climate solutions as in previous years? The very same forces that are heading us toward climate catastrophe have created ongoing misery among the peoples of the global south. When will we have genuine “climate justice?”

Actualmente, Gabriel descansa en su casa, junto a su familia, de donde nunca debió haber sido arrancado.

In 1972 and 1973 prison officials charged Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox, and Robert King with murders they did not commit and threw them into 6x9 ft. cells in solitary confinement, for over 36 years. Robert was freed in 2001, but Herman and Albert remain behind bars.

Climate Camp Roundup: Scotland, Wales, Ireland +

United Kingdom, 24.08.2009 15:39

The summer of 2009 is seeing an upsurge in campaigning on climate change, with Climate Camp protests taking place throughout Europe and the world [see list] ahead of the COP15 UN Climate talks in Copenhagen in December this year. Climate Camps have recently taken place in Scotland, Wales and Ireland (ongoing) with hundreds of people occupying land, learning about climate change, exchanging skills and taking direct action, as well as supporting local residents already engaged in resisting fossil fuel schemes that damage their health and the environment. Camps have also taken place in France [see imc.nantes] and near Antwerp by the Belgian/Dutch border  [see imc.nl|imc.be]. Next up is the UK Camp for Climate Action in London on 26th August, ahead of an autumn of mass action [2] before COP15 [1|2]. See Full Article

Occupation Day 12: Negotiations Stop, Rallies to Continue

United States, 24.08.2009 07:07

Latest (8/20): Anti-foreclosure activists crowd mayor's office; Rybak hides, doesn't support foreclosure moratorium.  "Call 311," says an aide.

Talks broke down between Rosemary Williams and the companies preventing her from owning her home, organizers revealed Tuesday at 3138 Clinton Ave.  But plans were also announced about how the eviction resistance will continue.

The offer from GMAC and Aurora Loan Services - two of the plethora of companies in the picture (a hard-to-follow flowchart was handed out on Tuesday) - was for Williams to rent the home, reportedly at $850 a month, for a mere 12-month period with no option to buy and no guarantees against a future rent increase... The Obstacles to Real Health Care Reform - Private Insurers and Big PhRMA

Boston, 23.08.2009 16:09

Simply put, the obstacle to real health reform is the insurance and drug lobby's stranglehold on Democrat and Republican administrations and Congress. Corporate lawyers draft new laws, sign-off on changes, and industry officials staff the FDA, CDC, and other related agencies, then return to high-paying jobs in the sectors they represent. Public welfare is unconsidered under a system favoring profits, so achieving real reform is near-nil. Whatever, if any legislation, passes, will make a dysfunctional system worse by rationing care, leaving growing millions uninsured, many others underinsured, while enriching insurers, drug companies, and large hospital chains.

HANFORD, MERCURY WASTE DUMP OF NATION? 11,000 METRIC TONS

Portland, 22.08.2009 21:08

All the Mercury in the USA, currently existing, and generated by private sources, up to 11,000 metric tons, may be stored at Hanford Nuclear Reservation, 215 miles upstream of Portland, on the Columbia River. The US Department of Energy is considering this plan and accepting comments.

COMMENT DEADLINE: AUGUST 24, 2009

COMMENT ONLINE: click here

HANFORD IS THE MOST CONTAMINATED SITE IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, AND THE LARGEST ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP PROJECT IN THE WORLD.

DOES THIS PLACE NEED YET ANOTHER 'MISSION'?

Hanford covers 586 square miles of desert in eastern Washington. 51 miles of the Columbia River runs through it. It is 35 miles north of the Oregon border, and 215 miles upstream from Portland.

Recommended commentary is that the USDOE TAKE NO ACTION, NOT ACCEPT COMMERCIAL MERCURY WASTE, the army should handle the mercury storage. At the very least, NO MERCURY TO HANFORD.

Hecklers Unite! Why Aren't Progressives Disrupting ObamaCare Town Halls?

DC, 22.08.2009 19:09

Many progressives are getting all bent out of shape over the "brown shirt" rabble organized by health industry PR firms to disrupt the so-called "town meetings" being organized all over the country by Democratic members of Congress. What they are conveniently forgetting is that these are not really "town meetings" at all, at least in the sense of the town meetings I grew up with, and started out covering as a young journalist in Connecticut—that is, meetings called and run democratically, with leaders elected from the floor, open to all residents of a community. These "town meetings" are really nothing but propaganda sessions run by members of Congress who are trying to burnish their fraudulent credentials as public servants, and trying to perpetrate a huge fraud of a health care bill that purports to be a progressive "reform" of the US health care system, but that actually further entrenches the control of that system by the insurance industry, and to a lesser extent, the hospital and drug industry…
