Another salmon disaster in the making!

Rogue Valley, 08.09.2009 04:39

Major Klamath River tributaries - the Scott and Shasta Rivers - are being progressively dewatered as irrigation wells multiply and irrigation pumping increases. This year Coho and Chinook Salmon will most likely not be able to reach spawning grounds in the Scott and Shasta River Basins because low flows have created barriers to salmon migration. Federal and state agencies responsible for fish and wildlife refuse to act and actually provide cover for the continued dewatering. Environmental groups, tribes and fishing organizations have done nothing to stop and reverse the dewatering. Will the self-styled "defenders" of Klamath Salmon stand by while the Scott and Shasta Rivers continue to die?

Labor Day Re-visited

Rogue Valley, 07.09.2009 16:09

John Hilkey with the Machinist Union wrote me: "Wes, How can I get this in either the Ashland or Medford paper? Our union is on a push to use newspapers. Greg Stiles used to be a contact for me, but he doesn't respond."

I responded: "Brother John Hilkey, Nice to hear from you. It has been awhile. I'm probably not the best to help out due to the fact that I have a long standing feud with corporate media and most so here at home (Southern Oregon). I'm talking about the Tribune and Tidings newspapers. Working on some "free press" right now for our Labor Day picnic. We'll see. If I was the Tribune editor I would print your piece on the front page and use it for an in-depth edition on Labor Day. There would be extensive coverage of how workers are getting stiffed and how we demand a bail-out for working people! Yea. Tooth fairies, Santa Clause and me the editor."

"Hey, I will post it on the Rogue IMC... Any photos or graphics you might want to use? I'll send it to KSKQ and ask that it be read on Labor Day, a bunch of times! They'll do it. This is small stuff I know, however it is media we control and its growing."

With this introduction take a look at John Hilkey's article--Wes Brain, Rogue IMC volunteer

Loud Minority Tries to Shout Down Health Care Talk in Palo Alto

San Francisco Bay Area, 06.09.2009 19:39

More than 1,000 people came to hear Congresswoman Anna Eshoo speak about health care reform at a town hall meeting in Palo Alto on September 2nd. They filled Gunn High School's Spangenberg Theatre to capacity and dozens were left standing outside in the heat of a warm evening. The Congresswoman, who is one of the authors of the health care reform bill spearheaded by President Obama, struggled to maintain decorum as right-wing protesters heckled her. A rally outside the auditorium lasting for over an hour ahead of the event included demonstrators on both sides of the issue.

Safe Haven Member Jesse Masengale Back in City Court

United States, 05.09.2009 19:37

On Wednesday, September 2, Jesse Masengale returned to city court for two tickets given to him by Champaign police this summer. A member of the Safe Haven community, Jesse was present when Champaign police showed up on June 8 to videotape the “tent city” that had been set up on the property of the Catholic Worker House. He was subsequently given two tickets for obstructing and assaulting a police officer.

A Champaign city attorney has offered Jesse a plea bargain, a tacit acknowledgement that at least half of these charges are bogus. The assault charge will be dropped if he pleads guilty to the obstructing charge and agrees to three months of court supervision and 100 hours of community service.

Witnesses say that Jesse had tossed his cell phone to a friend to take pictures when the police began to detain him. This was interpreted by police as an attempt to hit officer Gregory Manzana in the head―assault with a cell phone. The second charge of obstructing justice was for Jesse’s insistence that police stop their videotaping. REad More

Supreme Court Orders Evidenciary Hearing for Death Row Prisoner Troy Anthony Davis

United States, 05.09.2009 16:07

On August 17, 2009, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered a hearing on the innocence claim of death row prisoner Troy Anthony Davis. For years, courts have shown little interest in establishing Troy Davis' innocence, asserting that it was legally irrelevant as he had exhausted his appeals. But now Supreme Court justices have declared that "The substantial risk of putting an innocent man to death clearly provides an adequate justification for holding an evidentiary hearing."

In 1991 Davis was convicted for the 1989 killing of an off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail. There is no physical evidence tying Davis to the crime scene and seven out of the nine non-police witnesses have since recanted or altered their initial testimonies. Others have implicated the prosecution"s key remaining witnesses as the actual perpetrator of the crime.

Nepalese monkeys saved from vivisection

United Kingdom, 04.09.2009 19:38

After a global campaign that lasted for six years, the Nepal government has decided to definitely halt the breeding of monkeys for biomedical research in the USA. A letter from the Ministry of Forestry will be sent to Pravesh Man Shrestha, who has been breeding monkeys for the past five years, asking him to release the 310 rhesus monkeys back into the wild. Last year Shrestha planned to sell 25 of the 300 monkeys to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research Center, but following a temporary court injunction, the Nepalese Parliament banned the export.

The Nepalese government repeatedly claimed on numerous occasions that the monkey farms don't exist, that any monkey farms are illegal and that Nepal doesn't have a policy of breeding monkeys for export to American vivisection laboratories. This was later proven to be all lies when the farms were exposed in August 2008 (Photos | Video | Report).

Zippos Circus Campaign

United Kingdom, 04.09.2009 14:09

With Zippos Circus now in Southsea, the Southern Animal Rights Coalition (SARC) have promised protests for the duration of time the animal circus is in the area, as well as working with groups in Horsham and London where the circus visits next. Zippos is one of only eight British circues' that continues to include animals in its performances, using horses, birds and dogs.

SARC reported they are currently touring with at least 4 horses, kept in tiny stables, 3 Shetland ponies in very tiny box areas, one of which was circling around - a sign of stress in animals, and an unknown number of budgies. Zippos has carted animals up and down the country since February this year, as part of their 2009 tour, and are remembered for supporting abuse against elephants and a chimpanzee named Trudy.

The group said: "It is highly stressful being made to perform in front of bright lights, loud music and crowds of people, and highly unnatural. They have no choice in whether they perform or not and humans just don't have the right to exploit animals in this way for money."

Actions launched aginst Europes largest Arms Fair

United Kingdom, 04.09.2009 13:38

Anti-militarist activists have begun taking action against Europe's largest Arms Fair, Defence Systems and Equipment International (DSEi), which returns to London's Excel Centre from the 8th to 11th of September.

Actions to date include a mass action launched from Climate Camp against Barclays Bank the largest backer of the global arms trade, attacks on branches of HSBC and RBS, a picket of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Trade Fair, a pixie action against Brighton based arms manufacturers EDO MBM/ITT, and pickets of an Armed Forces recruitment centre and DSEi's new organisers Clarion Events.

More actions are expected over the weekend following a call-out for disruption of exhibitors premises in the lead-up to the Arms fair, and for this purpose, a map of exhibitors locations was created.

A local paper has reported that military staff were drafted in to support the 3000 police who secured the last DSEi, which is held every two years. Policing costs are likely to be even higher this year, as Disarm DSEi has called for the mass action on Tuesday 8th September to take place in the City, where investors and backers of the Arms Trade will be targeted. The action will be a test of post G20 policing strategies. Disarm DSEi which campaigns against the Arms Fair has refused to negotiate with the police. Past actions have been the subject of major repression, and searches and kettles have been used frequently. This year was the first time that the Forward Intelligence Team (FIT) were not photographing people attending the public meeting.

Other actions scheduled for the week include noise demos against a pre-DSEi Conference on Monday 7th September, and the Arms Dealers Dinner in Mayfair on the evening of Thursday 10th September. Local campaign East London Against the Arms Fair (ELAAF) are calling a musical protest on Saturday 5th September, 2-5pm, Western Entrance to the ExCeL Centre. There will also be a Fourth Plinth Flashmob against the arms fair - “Never mind the art. Disarm the arms trade!” – meet on steps of St Martin in the Fields Church on the North-eastern corner of Trafalgar Square, 8:40am Monday 7th September, and a candlelit vigil for victims of the arms trade, 7th September, 6:30pm, Royal Victoria DLR station. Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT)will be organising a demo against UKTI DSO on Tuesday 8th September, and a 100 hour fast during the Arms Fair.
