Operation Liberation Demo at Highgate Rabbit Farm

United Kingdom, 30.09.2009 18:39

On Saturday 26th September, 350 people demonstrated outside Highgate Rabbit Farm in Lincolnshire, a supplier of rabbits and ferrets to the vivisection industry, including Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), Europe's largest and most exposed lab. The Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) protest titled 'Operation Liberation' was part of the campaign to close down the farm and hailed as a success, bringing the attention of local people to the farms immoral practices.

Several short speeches were made by campaigners as protesters stood 750 metres from the farm which lies in Normanby-on-Spital. They were not allowed to stand any closer to the farm as police had placed a Section 14 Notice on the premises which forbids members of the public from passing the 750 metre perimeter. As demonstrators arrived police used a 12 by 6 foot banner to announce the implementation of the legislation.

Chicago Rallies Against 2016 Olympics with IOC Vote Looming

Chicago, 30.09.2009 16:08

On September 29, hundreds attended a protest outside City Hall in downtown Chicago against Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, and decrying the Olympic bid as a financial boondoggle for the city. Even though some 300 attended the rally, public opinion against Chicago 2016 has grown, with even Chicago corporate media finding a majority of Chicagoans opposed to the bid (meanwhile, Madrid saw half a million people rally FOR Madrid's 2016 Olympic bid). "That these poll numbers couldn't be translated into larger numbers of people on the street yesterday is a reflection of the fact that many religious and community organizations that focus on survival issues that would be directly impacted by these games – food, housing, education, jobs – are apparently intimidated into keeping their opposition silent."

The Chicago bid book, which outlines the financial proposal for Chicago's 2016 bid, was written before the recession hit and many of the anticipated funding streams have since dried up. Thus, funding the Olympics could skyrocket into the billions of dollars with the shortfall paid by city residents and from the city's controversial TIF program — an ostensible program to aid development but which has morphed into a mechanism to funnel public funds into unaccountable slush funds controlled by Mayor Daley and approved surrogates.

Activism on the Olympics in Chicago has increased, with No Games Chicago sending delegates to Copenhagen where the final vote will take place on October 2nd. The Chicago 2016 publicity machine, run by the controversial PR group Hill & Knowlton, has deployed an all-star team to sway the International Olympic Committee, including President Obama and even possibly Michael Jordan. Despite this blitz, analysts say that Rio De Janeiro is still a slight favorite to win the 2016 Olympics.

"SCARY ACORN PEOPLE ARE COMING TO GET YOU!" Just so we're on the same page, here: community organizing group ACORN registered large numbers of black voters in Chicago for the last big "election". As is common in many registration campaigns, there's a fair number of wise-asses registering dead peoples' names, or fake names. Also, as is required by law by boards of elections in any US city I've been to, any bogus/invalid registrations are reported, to keep the voter rolls cleared of all the dead people, and all those Luke Skywalkers and Donald Ducks.

Eric McDavid Update - Appeal, Birthday, and More

Portland, 29.09.2009 23:08

Hello friends, We are incredibly relieved to finally be able to tell you that the opening brief for Eric's appeal was filed on September 17. This is only the first step in a very long process, but after over a year's worth of delays, it was a welcome development. The government's response to Eric's brief is due on October 15 - although it is quite possible there will be more delays. We will post the opening brief on Eric's website soon. We also want everyone to know that after a recalculation of his points (what the BOP uses to determine in what security level prison to place someone), Eric realized he qualifies for a low-security facility. He has put in a request to be moved and is awaiting a response. We will let you all know as soon as we hear anything.

Eric's birthday is on October 7. It would be great if everyone could send him a quick note of support to remind him we haven't forgotten about him. You can send cards and letters to:

Excellent report of Pittsburgh Anti-G20 black bloc protests

Portland, 29.09.2009 23:08

This is on-the-spot reporting just in from the first day of the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, which has seen a great deal of spirited resistance and confrontation—perhaps as much as has occurred at any anarchist mobilization in North America in half a decade. This gushy, hastily composed account presents the context, attempts to convey the spirit of the day, and raises a few preliminary questions.
The basic narrative of the day runs thus: The protesters attempt to reach the summit site, but are brutally forced back by police. They eventually turn around and march through Pittsburgh neighborhoods and shopping districts, where the police pursue and attack them. Property destruction intensifies in response to these attacks, and the conflict culminates in a standoff between police and students during which a black bloc destroys a business district.

BREAKING NEWS: Homeless people camp and protest once again at City Hall

An Organized night time protest is now in effect.

"We are here tonight to show that this is the only campsite that is safe inside the city of Portland and that we really need places that we are able to go for the night and know that we are going to be safe. By safe, we mean that we'll be able to pitch a tent or sleep in a shelter or live in a tent city without harassment from the police."

A Complaint About Police Harassment in Downtown Portland

Portland, 29.09.2009 23:08

I work downtown. I work in a high rise office building, I have a PhD, I pull in a fairly good salary, and I am very involved with my community. I tell you these things, not because I think you ought to be impressed by them, but because I want to draw you a picture of the two different worlds that I am part of and the perspective that gives me. In one world, I have a five star view of the city from my ivory tower office, where I interact primarily with people in suits. In the other world, I am an advocate for people who are homeless - as I once was - and I am very close to the streets. And so this is where this story begins.

It would serve the public interest best if the John Day Basin Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement was rendered not worthy of further consideration and set aside in the same way as its nasty sister, the Western Oregon Plan Revisions

Political Prisoner High Concern

Portland, 29.09.2009 23:08

Looking for support for an eco/indigenous warrior getting worst treatment of his lengthy sentence - worst treatment out of 5 fed prisons. Please write or call...

I don't want to use the words 'prisoner emergency' yet but we are rapidly approaching it. Hello, my name is Sumner Gray and I have been writing Oso Blanco aka Byron Chubbuck, for over 5 of the 10 years he's been in the fed. prison system and this is the WORST TREATMENT HE HAS RECEIVED while incarcerated. For full info on Oso visit ('the case' and 'the cause' tabs explain a lot).

There are two main areas of concern. First is my belief that USP Lewisburg is an archaic institution, stuck in time in its interactions with inmates (openly racist and hateful). Oso has been punished for the silliest things and I truly believe that this prison is trying to rack up enough punishment time against him that he will lose all contact with the outside world. In short, they are trying to keep him indefinitely in solitary. Oso has racked up 1.5 years of no phone calls, 1.5 years of no visitation, and 1.5 years of loss of store privileges! He hasn't even been at this facility for 6 months (more details below). Secondly, mail (isn't that always a problem for political prisoners?) has come to a halt in and out for Oso. He has not received any of his three current paid for magazine subscriptions nor any political papers since his transfer to Lewisburg. Oso is an avid writer - often sending two to three letters out a day. All contact has been lost for months except to me off and on.

Troops out of Afghanistan now!

United Kingdom, 29.09.2009 06:09

"BRING the troops back from Afghanistan!" is the message that will be coming across loud and clear in Worthing town centre on Saturday (October 3).

The stall and protest, which begins at 11am at Holder's Corner, Montague Street, comes just four days before Wednesday's eighth anniversary of the start of the war, which has now gone on for longer than either of the two world wars.

Said Dave Phillips of worthing eco-action, one of the groups involved in the protest: "Bin Laden is still alive, the civilians and soldiers are still dying and nobody seems to know what the point of it all is. Opinion polls have shown the majority of British people think that all our troops ouught now to be pulled out of Afghanistan immediately.

Senators Deny Insurance Company Money Sways Them

DC, 28.09.2009 22:10

As politicos left the Sunday morning talk shows this week, I asked about money in politics, specifically, from insurance and finance and if politicians were not doing the bidding of Wall Street in the healthcare debate. I asked Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), if the problem — as the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee has argued — isn’t the “public option” — but the private option. I questioned her about Aetna and New York Life Insurance being among her largest contributors as she opposes an enhanced Medicare-for-all (or single payer) program — as well as even a mere public option: “I do what’s best for my constituency and the American people, it has nothing to do with the contributions I receive” the senator said.

Anti-war activist Bill Perry, Viet Nam war veteran "I was in the thick of things here in Pittsburgh for two and a half days and I can assure you that ALL of the violence I witnessed, and I witnessed many acts (I, myself, was even tear gassed, threatened with drawn guns, attacked by an LRAD {Long Range Acoustic Device} and verbally abused and harassed by your storm troopers) was instigated/perpetrated by cops/military that seemed far better equipped than our soldiers in combat zones. Besides resisters being targeted, the weapons that were used by the paid thugs were used in residential neighborhoods or college campuses with accompanying and significant “collateral damage.” I witnessed a 60ish year-old woman having a panic attack on her doorstep in Lawrenceville and mothers with babies getting caught in your crap-storm."
