McKinley High Student EK Challenges DC Teacher Layoffs

DC, 16.10.2009 23:10

Oct 8: The highlight of the rally for respect was the speech given by a McKinley high school student known as E.K. who was a co-leader in organizing the student protests against DC teacher layoffs. His speech was awesome as he encouraged the audience to resist the forces of tyranny. E.K. was articulate, self-confident and inspiring to what turned out to be a mostly adult crowd. The crowd at Freedom plaza let out a roar in response to E.K.'s comments about the student meeting with the McKinley Tech. high school principal, David Pinder. thewashingtonteacher || Video by Carlos in DC

Resistance To The Fur Trade

United Kingdom, 16.10.2009 18:39

With fur back in season so is the resistance to it. From raids at farms to sabotage of shops, this autumn has so far been another round of biting back. In the last two months farms imprisoning mink have been closed down in Germany by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and found abandoned in Italy by the Animal Liberation Investigation Unit (ALIU), while various shops selling fur have given up the cruel trade.

Since the launch of the West Yorkshire Animal Rights Group (WYARG) in August Best Vintage, Room 7, Accent Clothing and TK Maxx have stopped selling fur and with Daniel Footwear promising to follow suit, focus is now on Next One Leather (the last fur shop in West Yorkshire), by targeting their store and associates (1 | 2 | 3). In the West Midlands, the Western Animal Rights Network (WARN) launched a campaign against Madeleine Ann, ensuing three shops going fur free, with demos lasting under a month (1 | 2 | 3 | Video) after products were eventually sent back to the suppliers, ending their sale of fur products (Video). On the same day Le Scarpe issued a fur-free statement leading to harassment from police and new targets established in Cheltenham, while in the capital protests have escalated as anti-fur activists locked onto the London Fur Company's stall at the London Fashion Weekend, causing the organisers to ask the company to pack up and leave (Videos: 1 | 2).

Resisting Deportations to Bagdad

United Kingdom, 16.10.2009 16:09

Around fifty people protested on 14th October against the deportation of more than forty people to Baghdad. The demonstration was called to stop the first mass deportation flight to Baghdad, and demanded that "the first mass deportation flight to southern Iraq, expected to leave on Wednesday, is suspended and the detainees threatened with forcible removal are released immediately." Activists from International Federation of Iraqi refugees and Stop Deportation Network spoke and called for an end to all deportations to Iraq and to free the detainees. Also on 14th October an early day motion was tabled by 4 MPs in the House of Commons which "calls for the deportation of Iraqi refugees to Iraq to be halted and for the Iraqi detainees threatened with forcible removal to be released immediately". Despite this the first deportation to Baghdad took place and 39 people were deported early on Thursday the 15th October on a specially chartered plane provided by Air Italy. However only ten of the detained people were taken off the flight in Baghdad while the other detainees were not accepted by the Iraqi government and were flown back to detention in the UK.

A model letter has been produced by NCADC for people to use as part of their campaign against Air Italy over this issue. A further demonstration has been called for Saturday October 17th in Parliament Square, London, at 2pm to oppose the deportations to Iraq.

Venezuelan president meets with New York unionists

NYC, 15.10.2009 18:39

"Washington's plans in South America have failed, said the Venezuelan president. He told the workers that capitalism has failed and that while the Soviet Union fell apart, it was never a threat. The U.S. and European powers were the threat. "They fought against socialism," he said and pointed out that since its inception, the Soviet Union had gone through many wars and that "socialism got lost along the way."

"Imperialism fought against the workers' dream of building a new world," he said, "but "the only way to save the world is socialism. Obama talks change, change, change. Tell me how, within the framework of capitalism?"

Once the Soviet Union was gone, Chávez said, "The neoliberals were able to impose themselves." Neoliberal proposals became stronger and "the free market has messed everything up. What is labor flexibility for them becomes hungry children."

NYPD CRACKS DOWN ON BROOKLYN CRITICAL MASS

NYC, 15.10.2009 18:09

October 9th, 2nd Friday of the month: Brooklyn Critical Mass, an unorganized group bicycle ride celebrating community and non-polluting transportation experienced a sudden reversal of tactics from NYPD. Police in Brooklyn for years have typically monitored and followed the ride with numerous motor vehicles, even at times facilitating the safe passage of cyclists through the hazardous motor-dominated streets. This month a ride through Prospect Park resulted in dangerous conditions, multiple summonses and one arrest in a calculated strategy of entrapment by formally- friendly police.

Three weeks to go to the election. Last night I interrupted Mike Bloomberg’s opening statement in the debate. Every person on stage was frozen in an open-mouthed snapshot of surprise.

Het kraakverbod

Netherlands, 14.10.2009 17:39

These, and issues of media, political activism, as well as, the Black Is Back Coalition were discussed this evening on a panel consisting of Glen Ford of BlackAgendaReport.com, Dr. Wilmer J. Leon of Howard University and On With Leon, and Jared Ball of Morgan State University and VoxUnion Media. Audio || voxunion.com

Chomsky was itnerviewed by Radio Havana Cuba on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the arbitrary arrest and detention in Miami of Cubans Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who after a legally flawed trial in Miami District Court, are incarcerated in US prisons for infiltrating anti-Cuba Miami based groups of terrorists with the aim of defending Cuba against US based terrorism. As Professor Chomsky says in this interview "They weren't criminals. They were heroes". He points out "that the only way to remedy the injustice is to withdraw the charges completely".

Shlomo Zand, Author of "The Invention of the Jewish People", at UC Berkeley.

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.10.2009 20:39

On Tuesday October 13 , Shlomo Zand will be speaking about his newly translated book "The Invention of the Jewish People", at 3335 Dwinelle Hall, UC, Berkeley. In this bold and ambitious new book, Shlomo Sand shows that the Israeli national myth has its origins in the nineteenth century, rather than in biblical times - when Jewish historians, like scholars in many other cultures, reconstituted an imagined people in order to model a future nation.
