Belarus, 19.11.2009 15:07

squat_back.jpg

New Yorkers Tell Baseball Commish: 'Strike Out Israeli Settlements!'

NYC, 19.11.2009 05:44

Over fifty human rights advocates gathered outside the office of Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig in midtown Manhattan at lunch time today to demand that he prevent the New York Mets from hosting a Citi Field fundraiser for a Jewish group that supports violence and racism against Palestinians. The protest came two weeks after eleven organizations sent a letter to the Mets and Commissioner Selig asking them to cancel the event for the Hebron Fund at the Caesars Club, which is located directly above the Jackie Robinson Rotunda at Citi Field. The groups said that the event would “taint” the Mets and Major League Baseball’s commitment to diversity and equality, and insult the memory of Jackie Robinson.

PCJF forces D.C. Police to disclose General and Special Orders

DC, 18.11.2009 06:19

The Partnership for Civil Justice Fund has just obtained a massive disclosure of previously withheld documents governing police operations. The PCJF forced the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. (MPD) to disclose nearly all of its General Orders and Special Orders and related directives that dictate how officers are to exercise their authority. Most of this information has been withheld by the police from the public. The public can now review what the MPD internal policy dictates regarding police-resident contacts, stops and frisks, restrictions on MPD high speed vehicular pursuits, use of closed circuit television cameras, handling of property, obligations to release persons through the citation release program, electronic recording of interrogations, use of canines, traffic safety compliance checkpoints and a range of other issues that span the full scope of police authority. DCMPD.org

Traditional Native Leaders: Hydrofracking must be banned

Rochester, 17.11.2009 07:07

Albany, NY—The Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force (HETF), the environmental branch of the traditional Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) government, issued a statement on November 5th calling on New York State to ban the permitting of natural gas drilling.

The statement by the Haudenosaunee leaders vowed to exert their treaty rights to ban any hydrofracking on or near their aboriginal territory, and cited threats posed by the proposed drilling not only within the New York City watershed but to clean water around the region, including the Great Lakes which contain a fourth of all potable fresh water in the world.

RE-ENTRY: Judicial Process Commission fights for survival

Rochester, 17.11.2009 07:07

The waiting room at Judicial Process Commission is small, with a worn, older-looking blue carpet. Two fans whirl in the background. And a quarter-pot of coffee smolders below a plaque, the type you see in hospitals and nursing homes, that says - the Virginia and John Mackey Reception Area.

If you were just released from prison - with no job and no money - this modest little room off Ormond Street is a welcome sight. For many, it's a place to start over.

Day One of GEO Strike!

United States, 17.11.2009 06:37

GEOdayone 172.JPG

Despite the rain and cold, hundreds showed up on Monday, November 16, 2009 to join picket lines thrown up around several buildings on the quad at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After negotiations broke down over the weekend, the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) called for a strike. They have been without a contract for more than three months.

In the morning, picket lines were set up at all entrances of Gregory Hall, Foellinger Auditorium, Davenport Hall, the Foreign Languages Building, and the English Building. Hundreds of classes were cancelled across campus and all of the classes in the English Building were called off. GEO members marched in circles and joined in chants that could be heard from inside the buildings. The GEO drum corps travelled to each building to keep the picket lines inspired with live drumming. A trombone player joined them playing to the tune of the 1980s pop song, “I Want Candy,” which GEO members adapted to, “I Want Contract!”

Running Up That Hill (and Out of This Town): NYC Humiliates David Irving

NYC, 16.11.2009 23:38

Once we were alerted to the whereabouts of Irving's talk, hilariously booked at the Times Square Doubletree Hotel as "The Real History Conference," we activated our network of shadowy agents. A little reconnaissance goes a long way, and we quickly found the best route onto the sixth floor of the hotel. Once there, thirty pissed off anti-fascists rushed the door. Of course Irving and his protectors quickly closed and dead-bolted themselves inside, stranding both his personal assistant, Jaenelle Antas, as well as self-described "next Hitler" Alex Carmichael.

Senator Wyden's Townhall in Grants Pass, OR

Rogue Valley, 16.11.2009 20:10

I attended Ron Wyden's Town Hall in Grants Pass today and it was a far different scene from the one he had in Medford in August. The "tea baggers" didn't show up in any force, although there were plenty of retired military folks and conservatives in the audience that maybe numbered 150 folks. As he did in Medford, Wyden began by honoring a bunch of mostly World War II vets who came in their VFW and American Legion finery.

They handed out tickets to those who wanted to speak and lo and behold, mine was the first one selected. So, I said something to this effect:
