Olympic Resistance Network Speaker Prevented From Speaking Out in Portland

Portland, 20.12.2009 23:39

Marla Renn, a member of the Olympic Resistance Network (ORN), was travelling to Portland, Oregon to speak on the negative impacts of the 2010 Games. Renn was scheduled to speak at educational events at Mt. Hood Community College, Reed College, Portland State University, and the Red and Black Cafe. She was held for over six hours as both Canadian and US border guards interrogated her about the subject of her speech, her contacts in Portland, and her political activities. She was previously denied entry for a Seattle speaking event on the grounds that ten anti-Olympic shirts were unauthorised commercial merchandise, but the shirts were found after she had already been questioned on political issues. Likewise, the excuse for rejecting her this time (lack of employment since her graduation in August) was brought up after her planned speech and political activities were addressed by border guards.

Eugene Shows Solidarity with Copenhagen Demonstrators

Portland, 20.12.2009 23:39

In the wake of the failure of the governments of the world to come any substantial consensus on what to do about climate change, and in view of their failure to even discuss real solutions to climate change, members of Eugene's Black Tea Society staged a solidarity action in the form of a banner drop. The COP15 talks only served to reaffirm what many of us in the climate justice movement already knew: that the so-called "leaders" of the world have no intention of rising above petty national bickering to solve the most urgent crisis of our time. In the face of government collaboration and inaction it is the responsibility of every human to rise to the defence of mother earth. We are but the crest of a rising tide of popular discontent which will sweep away the old order, replacing it with one based in mutual aid, sustainable living, and cooperative economics. Our survival depends on it.

COP15 Fails -- Capitalism is Ecocide

United Kingdom, 20.12.2009 22:09

As the politicians and protesters disperse from Copenhagen , the COP15 climate talks were judged to have ended in a failure to produce any binding commitment to tackle climate change. On Saturday 12th, an estimated 100 000 joined a demo, to be met with repressive policing and mass arrests. The same style of policing continued for the duration of the summit, with hundreds of protestors detained for hours in degrading and inhumane conditions. Whilst the police demonstrated the limits of freedom and democracy on the streets, inside the convention centre western powers and corporations dominated the proceedings, imposing unfair conditions and watering down the already inadequate proposals that were on the table.

In London, the Climate Camp which was set up after the 'wave' demo on December 5th, remained in situ in Trafalger Square throughout the summit, mounting a number of actions, including an action against Tar Sands at Canada House on Monday 14th, and a protest against the Danish police on Thursday 17th.

Collapse in Copenhagen: Climate Justice Advocates Demand a Deal, But COP15 is a Meltdown

United States, 20.12.2009 22:08

Civil society, NGOs, island nations and nations from the Global South all demanded a "FAB" - fair, ambitious and binding - deal from this month's COP15 climate summit in Copenhagen. But as the summit concluded Friday, the only proposals on the table were none of the above. Some world leaders remained at the summit well past midnight, hashing out a document many are calling a "COPout." Others, such as President Obama, scurried to the airport to escape the climate crime scene that is Copenhagen's Bella Centre. At 2am inside the Centre, dozens of people chanting "Climate Justice Now!" held pictures of Obama with "Climate Shame" printed across his forehead.

The mass movement for climate justice on the streets of Copenhagen was, predictably, met with brutal force by the Danish Politi. Even accredited delegates were savagely beaten back with batons while attempting to walk out of the Bella Centre. In response, a call for solidarity actions prompted demonstrations worldwide. In Minneapolis (photos), a small group marched for climate justice on Nicollet Mall Friday night, just before the start of the city's popular "Holidazzle" parade.

NYers Carol for Leviev Boycott while Israel Jails Protesters’ Palestinian Allies

NYC, 20.12.2009 21:39

On a snowy Saturday afternoon, forty-five human rights carolers serenaded Madison Avenue shoppers with familiar holiday tunes outside the storefront of Israeli diamond and settlement mogul Lev Leviev, but their lyrics called for the boycott of Leviev’s companies. The New York protest took place against the backdrop of a growing arrest campaign by the Israeli military against Palestinian protest and boycott activists from West Bank villages where Leviev has built settlements.

The Indypendent Issue 144: Quagmire, Full Speed Ahead

NYC, 20.12.2009 20:39

President Barack Obama has given the green light to go full speed ahead in Afghanistan. What is he really getting himself into?

Anand Gopal, a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, reports on the quagmire that is the Afghan War.

Gopal writes, “Every time the Americans come into an area the bombing increases. After Obama sent 21,000 troops earlier this year, there was a 60 percent increase in violence over last year, which was already at record levels.

Despite the fact that every time the troops go into an area the violence increases and Pashtuns don’t want the Americans there, Obama is still putting more troops into the situation.

What’s the end game in all of this if they just keep throwing troops into it and the Pashtuns keep fighting back?”

Eagle Point School Board Trashes Workers

Rogue Valley, 20.12.2009 14:10

Sodexo successfully gets the Eagle Point School Board to turn over its nine food service managers to this greedy company who makes money by paying workers less, decreasing their benefits and taking away their voice at work. This is what union busting is all about.

The December 17, 2010 School Board meeting was timely for union busting since a new Oregon State law (HB2867) about "transparent outsourcing contractual requirements" does not take effect until January 1, 2010. This is just plain sleazy.

Wow--this is what being a Grinch looks like, trashing workers just before Christmas. The vote was divided with 3 voting for Sodexo and 2 voting for the workers. Three lumps of coal for the three Board Members who voted to trash workers!

SNOWPOCALYPSE! Plainclothes Cop Pulls Gun on Snowball Fight at 14th and U After His Hummer Takes A "Hit"

DC, 20.12.2009 02:09

LOCAL BOSS MEDIA LIES THROUGH TEETH, AS PER USUAL; CLAIMS COP RESPONDING TO "REPORT OF A MAN WITH A GUN" AT 14TH & U Reader "cookietime420" writes in to the Prince Of Petworth blog: The cops were standing by, stepping in now and then, generally annoyed. It got dangerous now and then, when snowballers would run in front of moving cars, but nobody got hit. Most cars moved through the intersection without getting hit. The snowballs were directed at other snowball fighters. Folks even helped push cars that got stuck in the street. Then the hummer showed up on the northeast corner of 14th and U. A few people threw (very soft – the snow wasn’t good for snowball formation) snowballs at his “car” and jokingly chanted “drill baby drill.” Then he got out and the rest is history. Folks chanted “don’t bring a gun to a snowball fight.” I’m utterly shocked that a guy in a hummer did something like this. Owning a hummer is usually a sign of a more refined individual. VIDEO: Undeclared Emergency - Homelessness & Rape in Portland

Portland, 20.12.2009 00:08

I filmed a 5 minute interview about the "PDX Undeclared Emergency" regarding women being safe on the streets when they are houseless. The Right 2 Survive campaign informed me on some recent bad news regarding homeless women being raped in the Portland area. Lately there have been some rapes in the homeless community in and around NE Portland. The Right 2 Survive is concerned and is activly doing something about it.

The activists have been organizing foot patrols and handing out whistles to women who are sleeping outside to use in the event that they are being abused or attacked. If you hear a whistle blowing go towards it and see / help / etc.... The Right 2 Survive group is asking for community solidarity in offering protection to folks (women) who are without any source of security to be free from rape and abuse while they just try to get through the night. The Right 2 Survive activists are not only seeking protection and organizing whistle handouts and networking on the street level, they are also asking and demanding the city takes a responsible role as well. They are showing up in city offices and working for real changes. They need the greater PDX community's support and their solidarity.

VIDEO Filmed at the recent Portland WTO D5 protest.

Nottingham City Council Attacks Free Speech

United Kingdom, 19.12.2009 18:39

Nottingham City Council has made the unprecedented step of threatening a critical local blogger via its solicitors. In a letter sent to the author of the Nottingham City Council LOLs (NCCLOLs) blog, solicitor Jon Ludford-Thomas states that the blog "contains personal, derogatory comments regarding a number of [the City Council's] councillors and employees that could cause distress to those individuals." It requests that the author "remove these personal, derogatory comments from ncclols and refrain from posting similar such comments on ncclols or elsewhere on the internet."

The ncclols blog describes itself as a resource for those who "want to know what [their] favourite local council ... gets up to?" and uses minutes of meetings and Freedom of Information requests to scrutinise what goes on in the Council chamber and beyond. In the past it has exposed some of the serious failings of Nottingham City Homes and the Council's housing benefit service.

Andy, author of NCCLOLs, says "It's not quite clear what legal basis NCC has for telling the blog not to write such things."

Shut Down H&K Goes to Church

United Kingdom, 19.12.2009 11:09

In an industrial estate in Nottingham, an anonymous warehouse serves as an international sales office and distribution depot for Heckler & Koch, a major small arms company, whose assault rifles and submachine guns are sold around the world. Next door to H&K is an evangelical church called Trent Vineyard, whose support local anti-arms activists are seeking in their campaign to close down the arms company. Shut Down H&K’s messages to the church leadership have gone unanswered, so campaign supporters decided to take their message to the regular churchgoers...

District Must Pay Millions in Settlements for Mass Arrests from 2000 and 2002

DC, 17.12.2009 23:09

For the third time at the end of 2009, the Attorney General for DC has decided to give settlement payments in mass arrest cases arising from large protests in DC, in 2000 and 2002. In these cases, hundreds of people, protestors and bystanders, were encircled while excercising their right to assemble, and arrested without warning. Through discovery and depositions during these long years, hiding or destruction of evidence by the police dept was uncovered, and perjury by the police chief. Some class action lawsuits from this period are still outstanding. More || justiceonline.org
