Mutual Aid Disaster Reilief for Haiti Needs Assistance

Boston, 17.01.2010 16:09

A group of US-based street medics is organizing an independent, mobile medic team to offer direct mutual aid to survivors of the disastrous earthquake in Haiti. This group has the benefit of not being attached to a larger organization or government bureaucracy, which means they can mobilize in communities not currently being reached by relief efforts. Many of these same people were involved in the effective, community-based medical response to Hurricane Katrina, including the Common Ground Clinic.

Grassroots Organizations Call For Solidarity After Earthquake Devastates Haiti

United States, 16.01.2010 19:08

On January 12th, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake was centered ten miles southwest of Haiti's capital Port-Au-Prince and was the largest earthquake to strike the Caribbean nation in more than two centuries. Buildings have collapsed and Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told CNN he believed more than 100,000 people have died. Among the buildings that collapsed were the Presidential Palace, the UN headquarters and at least one hospital in the capital... Read More at Houston IMC

Grassroots organizations in Haiti are struggling to ensure their voices are not lost amidst the outpouring of donations to traditional NGOs and religious charities. Meanwhile, on Friday, the Obama administration granted undocumented Haitians currently in the United States temporary protection status, a move pushed for by immigrant advocates since December of 2008. It's unclear what exactly this means for Haitians like activist Jean Montrevil currently in immigration detention. But Obama also recruited former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton to lead relief efforts, and and one of the more popular places to donate, Yele Haiti, has echoed calls for U.S. military intervention in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas.

Busy year for Nottingham hunt sabs

United Kingdom, 16.01.2010 12:09

2009 was a busy year for Nottingham hunt saboteurs who were sabbing from September to December in collaboration with sabs from Sheffield and Leeds. They successfully sabotaged a number of hunts in the region including the South Notts, the Burton and Blankney hunts in Lincolnshire and the Meynall & South Staffs and High Peak hunts in Derbyshire. The saboteurs also held a successful fundraising event in Nottingham.

In spite of the legal ban on hunting with hounds coming into force in 2005, most hunts continue as they did before. The police, used to protecting hunts and repressing saboteurs, have changed little in their approach. Hunt saboteurs use direct action to save the lives of hunted animals.

Southeast Oregon Plans a Coyote Killing Derby this Weekend

Portland, 16.01.2010 04:38

"That a state government agency would foster such a puerile, violent form of entertainment is morally unacceptable, and the logic behind it is nonsense. No one has undertaken a scientific study on the effects of the random killing of coyotes. In fact, as coyotes flee human threat, they regroup and reproduce, without the natural selection and competition of a large community of coyotes."

Beginning this weekend, hunters in southeast Oregon will host a killing derby, where "as many coyotes as possible" will be killed for prizes such as rifles, binoculars and scopes.

According to a 13 January Big Game Hunt notice, the derby will run from 16 January through the 17th throughout Lake, Malheur, Harney, and Klamath counties. The event will be headquartered in Silver Lake, Oregon, where the final winners will be determined.

Still working for a Nuclear Free City?

United Kingdom, 15.01.2010 12:39

The University of Manchester’s Dalton Institute is to receive over £8 million of investment from the Government to support the civil nuclear industry, in a deal announced this week by Business Secretary Lord Mandelson as part of the government’s plans to create a low carbon economic area in the Northwest. Yet the development will jeopardise Manchester’s status as a nuclear free city.

This latest move by the government aims to boost technical expertise in nuclear power generation while at the same time securing more environmentally sustainable sources of energy. The region already boasts a strong presence in the nuclear sector, employing more than 25,000 skilled professionals in 300 companies across the region, with a reported combined turnover of approximately £3 billion.

Local Rally in Support of Viva Palestina!

Rochester, 15.01.2010 01:08

About twenty local activists gathered in front of the Federal Building on January 6, 2010 in support of Viva Palestina! The Viva Palestina convoy numbers 500 and includes local student and film maker Adriano Contreras. It started in London, England in December. Led by Member of Parliament George Galloway, the delegation traveled through Europe to Egypt, where they intended to cross into Gaza on or around Christmas. The convoy consists of ambulances, trucks, buses and cars full of medical supplies and people. Galloway led a similar group to Gaza last summer, which was allowed to stay for 24 hours in the besieged territory. Viva Palestina is not affiliated with the Gaza Freedom March, led by the American group Code Pink. Both groups however share the common goal of a free Gaza.

Demand US Bank stop hurting the unemployed

Rogue Valley, 14.01.2010 22:39

OREGON'S UNEMPLOYED DESERVE A BREAK

Holding an incredibly powerful position to exploit unemployed Oregonians US Bank has spent big bucks to defeat measures 66 and 67 in the current January 26, 2010 election.

US Bank is the largest bank in Oregon. It is also the issuer of the ReliaCard, a "prepaid Visa" card through which out-of-work Oregonians receive their unemployment benefits. As a result, hundreds of thousands of US Bank's unemployed customers would get a tax cut if Oregonians vote YES for tax fairness. However, US Bank is opposing these efforts. It is simple - if the big banks win, out of work Oregonians will lose.

This issue is further explained by Tax Fairness Oregon. Go to their website and get the details and SIGN THE PETITION demanding the US Bank stop hurting its unemployed customers.
