SOLIDARITAT REBEL

Scientologists in Haiti: A Firsthand Account

DC, 02.02.2010 15:10

We've spoken to someone who traveled to Haiti on a Scientology plane — and witnessed firsthand the ineptitude, quackery and irresponsibility of the church's minions in a disaster zone. Here's his account. I arrived at JFK last week, ready to go. I knew we were traveling with doctors and EMTs, but I didn't expect to see 50 scientologists, in their yellow shirts with Volunteer Minister on them. They were completely unprepared for going to a third world country, let alone a disaster zone. One girl was in designer cowboy boots. I asked her if she'd brought any sturdier footwear. "Oh no, these'll be fine…"

Jailed in Oaxaca for Asking Ulises Ruiz a Question

United States, 02.02.2010 10:37

Four Tourists Detained after Pressing the Case of Murdered Indymedia Reporter Brad Will

On January 28, at around 9pm Andrea Caraballo, Guadalupe Rodriguez Lopez, James Wells and Jennifer Lawhorne were eating ice cream in the zocalo of Oaxaca. At that time, one of them recognized the face of the governor of Oaxaca who was about nine feet away. A friend of Brad Will took advantage of the governor’s presence to ask him about the case of Mr. Will, which to this day remains unresolved.

Governor Ulies Ruiz Ortiz walked away without giving a response. Five minutes later, between six and eight police agents, some in official uniform and others dressed in plainclothes, surrounded the four tourists, demanding to see their identifications and forcing them to enter a municipal police truck. The police refused to provide them with any information. Full Report | En Espanol | Video | unamalanocheenoaxaca.blogspot.com

The Teabagger Strategy: Obama and the Right

Boston, 02.02.2010 00:09

A year into President Barack Obama’s first term, it has become depressingly clear that he is, as Jay Leno put it, "our greatest Republican President ever." From warrantless wiretapping to bank bailouts to endless war, on issue after issue his policies have proven identical to those of George W. Bush. And unlike Bush, Obama’s position at the head of the Democratic Party, along with his immense talent as a salesman, allows him to advance the Republican agenda with almost no opposition from self-described liberals. But this unexpected windfall also presents the Republicans, or rather their corporate paymasters, with a dilemma. How do they get Obama reelected while pretending to oppose him?

On January 18th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, around 30 people gathered in the freezing cold on the Boston Common to demand that President Obama follow through on his promise to close down Guantanamo Bay Prison. The President had vowed to close Guantanamo Bay—located on a US Naval Base in Cuba where hundreds of accused "terrorists" are detained, many without charges or access to lawyers—within his first year, which ended on January 20th. The President, along with human rights organizations, have condemned Guantanamo for the use of torture and countless other violations of international human rights agreements.

Hey, James O'Keefe -- About That White Racist Forum You Attended in 2006...

DC, 30.01.2010 21:10

Interesting what could have been - or not have been - had we caught this four years ago. Back then, there was this white supremacist forum that we had called attention to and eventually attended that featured American Renaissance's Jared Taylor and National Review's homophobe extraordinaire John Derbyshire. It was originally supposed to be held at the building of the conservative activist organization Leadership Institute until it was forced to move to another location. This was where we met Marcus Epstein, and readers to this website knows how that relationship has blossomed into a rather comical one, to say the least. There was also a photographer there, and lo and behold this picture has surfaced of a now familiar face attending the forum - James O'Keefe. That's right, before the ACORN videos he produced, before the arrest for interfering with a Senator's phone lines, and just a few months after he graduated from Rutgers to work for the Leadership Institute, O'Keefe was manning a table at a forum of suit-and-tie Nazis. O'Keefe became dead letter to conservatives the moment the cuffs were slapped on him last week, but if he ever shows up again in respectable company, we hope he has explained this little outing before he pulls any more race-based stunts.

State of Emergency: Ice Storms Knock Out Indigenous Infrastructure in South Dakota

United States, 30.01.2010 14:37

It has been a devastating winter for weather-related disasters. While there has been a lot of information about (and vital response to) the situation in Haiti, there's another emergency closer to home, one which calls for solidarity with the indigenous people of South Dakota and surrounding areas.

The past weekend's ice storms brought down 2,000 to 3,000 utility poles on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota, knocking out an already shaky resource infrastructure.  Crews are working feverishly, but electricity may be out for up to 30 days in some areas. With no electricity, no heat, no running water, and a wind chill below zero the situation is growing more difficult. The bulk of those most affected by the storm are located on reservations in Pine Ridge, Standing Rock, Eagle Butte and others. This is an urgent state of emergency.

SchNEWS: Lanarky in Action

United Kingdom, 30.01.2010 14:09

Early Monday morning bailiffs and police under the auspices of the National Eviction Team (http://ukevict.com) began the long expected eviction of Mainshill Solidarity camp. (See SchNEWS 681 for the beginnings)

At the time of going to press the eviction was still ongoing with the tunnel teams working 24/7 to get at the hold outs underground - 43 arrests have been made so far - the majority charged with aggravated trespass.

Mainshill in South Lanarkshire, is the proposed site of a massive open-cast coal mine. Ten years of local opposition (Mainshill is set to be the fifth such mine in the area) culminated in the protest site. The camp was occupied 7 months ago in solidarity with communities in the Douglas Valley and support has been consistent ever since, with the camp kept well supplied by neighbours - including a full Christmas dinner. The site is owned by Lord Home, who is set to profit from allowing Scottish Coal to dig out 1.7 million tonnes of coal from Mainshill.

Portland, 30.01.2010 08:38

I know death is a scary and upsetting subject for most people. Emotions run high and people get confused about things. Especially under such strange and disturbing circumstances as the recent self immolation.
But in your search for meaning in this please be careful with your allies and comrades feelings. We're receiving a high volume of complaints from people who've had their feelings hurt and are expressing frustration with open publishing. Even worse than that, people are complaining that they are feeling discouraged from being a part of the struggle for animal rights (on all sides of the opinion spectrum on this issue).

On January 26th, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David S. Wesley ruled that the Animal Liberation Front is not a "gang." The government had tried to find two animal rights protestors guilty of being "gang members." Judge Wesley stated that the prosecution's expert Lt. Butte had "misled the grand jury. The ALF does not meet the legal requirements to be considered a gang. Their primary goal is to save animals, not commit crimes." That charge was dismissed though other charges remain.

With great sorrow, we mark the death of one of anarchism’s most thoughtful and productive minds, but it is with great joy that we celebrate his contributions to the movement for true justice and freedom. We share our joy for what he has given us with his actions and words, here in Boston and across the world. Far from being a lofty academic, before his professorship and writing career he was a dock worker from Brooklyn who went on to fight in WWII, earning his degree afterward on the GI Bill. Searching for the Significance of a Life and a Death

Portland, 29.01.2010 05:44

Yesterday, a man set himself on fire outside Ungar Furs, and burned himself to death. We know his name now: According to the Alliance, it was Daniel Shaull. And we know that what he did appears to have been in solidarity with the animals who continue to die horrible deaths, day after day after day, to keep Nicholas Ungar in business. We know that, even as he was on fire and undoubtedly in terrible pain, he mustered great strength and tried to go inside the fur store to spread the flames to the coats and garments and blood-stained profits of the last fur store in Portland.

I would like to know more.

Howard Zinn died today at age 87

Portland, 28.01.2010 19:38

Howard Zinn died of a heart attack at age 87 today. Author of "A People History of the United States" he was an amazing historian, activist, and anarchist.

More information here:  http://www.howardzinn.org/default/index.php

The Late, Great Howard Zinn

Boston, 28.01.2010 19:09

Howard Zinn was above all a gentleman of unflagging grace, humility and compassion. No American historian has left a more lasting positive legacy on our understanding of the true nature of our county, mainly because his books reflect a soul possessed of limitless depth. Howard’s PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES will not be surpassed. As time goes on new chapters will be written in its spirit to extend its reach. But his timeless masterpiece broke astonishing new ground both in its point of view and its comprehensive nature. The very idea of presenting the American story from the point of view of the common citizen was itself revolutionary. That he pulled it off with such apparent ease and readability borders on the miraculous. That at least a million Americans have bought and read it means that its on-going influence is immense. It is truly a history book that has and will continue to change history for the better.
