Protesting the MBTA search policy

Teddy Ansbacher-Hunt, 01.07.2004 17:11

Today, July, 1st at 8am civil liberties advocates gathered at the Park St. Station to protest the MBTAs new policy of random bag searches. The protest was attended and organized by groups including the American Civil Liberties Union of Mass., the National Lawyers Guild, the T Riders Union, and the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. A group of street actors put on a fake search where they confiscated papers with the Constitution and the Fourth Amendment written on them. Many protesters also sang Searching Charlie on the MTA, a new rendition of the classic. Approximately 50 people attended the demonstration.

Taste of Democracy Goes Down Well With Crowds, But Cops Choke Off Free Speech.

CIMC, 01.07.2004 15:44

On Wednesday, the day originally planned for the turnover of Iraqi sovereignty, Chicagoans gathered to bring a Taste of Democracy to the Taste of Chicago. Despite the fact that Bushs Iraq handler Paul Bremer turned over control to the Iraqi interim government on June 28 with a five minute speech and then fled in an armored helicopter, 200 people gathered at the plaza on Michigan and Congress to tell the public mission not accomplished. Read More | Photos: [ 1 | 2 ]

Police apparently had had their fill of free speech by the end of the march, and later arrested one protester when he chanted free speech near an Army of One recruiting station at the Taste. Full Story

U.S. Snoozes as Global Warming Alarms Sound

Michael T. Neuman, 01.07.2004 13:39

Dane County and the State of Wisconsin officials are among the many governmental officials not taking global warming seriously enough. If they did, they would not even be considering projects like the expansion of the West Beltline in Madison, a four lane highway around the east side of Madison and a Verona Road Freeway.

UGLY BARGAINING DISPUTE DEVELOPS

Yesterday (Wed. 6/30) I went to a noon-hour rally at the Jackson County Courthouse where over 100 gathered and showed strong solidarity for Jackson County workers and their current plight. County workers are involved in contract bargaining which has been less than respectful! These employees perform the work of the county for all its citizens, and they do this in stellar fashion. For the County to not support a living wage and health care package for these workers is totally unacceptable.

Violent Dispersals an opening salvo to GMAs presidential proclamation

imc-features, 30.06.2004 21:25

2,000 activists were dispersed by anti-riot police squads together with the military forces using tear gas and water canons as the activist groups occupied the Plaza Rotunda in Manila while protesting against Gloria Macapagal- Arroyos (GMA) anomalous proclamation on Wednesday.

According to mainstream media reports, the activists were dispersed by the authorities because they massed up at the Plaza without a permit to rally. While some other groups who are about to join at the Plaza were already blockaded by police squads before they plan to pass through the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon Avenue connecting to the Plaza. Violent dispersal has caused several dozens of activists brutally injured.

KUSP advertises American Water

I'm getting tired of hearing American Water being advertised on KUSP. This morning within a period of 1 minute I heard the names microsoft and american water. While the Felton residents are engaged in a dispute with the water company, I think it is unconscionable that KUSP advertises their name. Advertising for microsoft speaks for itself. Austin, 30.06.2004 16:00

#media_6742;right# On June 24, a federal appeals court rejected the Federal Communication Commission's controversial deregulations scheme to further enable monopolistic media in the United States. The Third Circuit Court ruling in "Prometheus Radio Project v. FCC" especially took issue with the FCC's rule changes which allowed for "cross-ownership" of newspapers and broadcast stations, and the concentration of broadcast ownership, in local markets. Together, these rules would have allowed one corporation to own three TV stations, 8 radio stations, and the monopoly newspaper in a single market. The court has ordered the FCC to revise the regulations or give a better justification for their necessity. In the meantime, media reform groups such as Free Press are encouraging people to demand a public hearing in their city - and take back their media! [SFBay IMC Feature]
Globally, public media control looks just as grim, with media moguls such as Italy's Berlusconi and Canadas's Leonard Asper owning over half of the media landscape and taking advantage of the power of censorship. Also other kinds of experiences are suffering repression, as in the case of Santa Eulalia occupied orchard in Hospitalet, under eviction threat, ParcCentralPark project in Poble Nou and el Parc de la Font Florida. La ocupacin contina

29.06.2004 15:19

  2. Bilbao, mircoles 30 en la Plza. Zirkular a las 19:30. KONTZENTRAZIOA.
