Multi Media Report Back: News Conference On Killing of Aaron Campbell

Portland, 15.02.2010 16:39

Video, audio and photographs from the February 12, 2010 News Conference at the Portland Justice Center regarding the death of an unarmed Portland citizen at the hands of a police sniper.

A number of people stood forward and addressed the crowd and media, including JoAnn Bowman of Oregon Action, a speaker from the Urban League, former State Senator Avel Gordly, as well as representatives from a wide variety of religions, to name just a few.
All voiced outrage and sorrow at the latest death of an unarmed citizen at the hands of our law enforcement officers. All were numb with grief, yet moved to action, on how to organize on local, state and federal levels to end this abuse of power.
Many regarded the actions of the PPD as reprehensible, and demanded an independent investigation of the incident.

Agence France-Presse.

Meet “VOBRO” in the kitchen! Come to the picket! 11 Sep 2008, 9:00, Brodnica

image 6209 While a young man covered in chocolate was bleeding on the floor, the work team busied itself cleaning the chocolate machine, thinking up a credible account of what happened that would not damage the company’s “repuation”. The company’s policy is based on marketing, where profit counts more than the health of a human being. Workers’ rights don’t exist, let alone any humanitarianism or ethics. Given this sort of company policy, it’s difficult to expect any sort of reaction from the owner of the “Vobro” sweet factory in Brodnica

It’s strange all the same that other workers, residents in the town and even local media are stunningly silent about the tragedy, sticking to the “nothing happened” version. But something did happen – a young p…

DC, 13.02.2010 01:10

District of Columbia, et al., relating to the April 15, 2000 mass arrest of nearly 700 people in Washington, D.C. This sets in motion the process for class members to receive up to $18,000 each in compensation for their claims. This is the largest class action settlement of protester claims in U.S. history. Nottingham City Council to end legal graffiti

United Kingdom, 12.02.2010 19:09

According to local rag the Evening Post, Nottingham City Council has "Nottingham City Council has made it illegal for large-scale graffiti art to take place at youth clubs. Those affected will reportedly be The Arches, Russell Youth Club and St Ann's Adventure Playground. It is not specified in the article what law or procedure has been used to do this.

The alleged ground is that legal graffiti encourages illegal graffiti or gives an appearance of neglect. This is based on the so-called "broken window theory."

While the ban appears to be restricted to council-run youth clubs, this is not clear and there is some concern that the ban might extend further, possibly to private graffiti displays (like that on the side of OhMyGosh records on Mansfield Road). Even if it's scope is tightly restricted, the removal of a legal space for young people to express themselves has been strongly criticised.

The Real Fashion Victims in New York

NYC, 12.02.2010 05:09

There are thousands of fashion victims in Manhattan, but these are not the victims of style that one typically imagines. They are the victims of the fashion industry: they are the low-wage workers who stock, sell, ring-up and protect fashionable clothing items which line the streets of Manhattan’s retail districts. Now, the workers are fighting back against stolen wages, unpaid overtime and hazardous conditions.

Close loophole for banks and insurers-HB 3615

Rogue Valley, 12.02.2010 01:10

YES on HB 3615 -- Protection from predatory lending and unfair insurance practices

In Oregon, if you buy a car and drive away with a lemon you're protected.

If the appliance dealer sells you a refrigerator that never works you're protected.

But, if your bank sells you a deceptive loan forget it, there's no protection under the UTPA.

Join us in telling lawmakers we need better protections for all of us living on Main Street not Wall Street.

HB 3615 will finally close the gap by adding a few simple words "loans, extension of credit and insurance" to the definition of goods and services covered by the UTPA. That's it!

7pm, Blue Heron Infoshop (Gray Campus Center Room 34)

Tre Arrow served 5 years in state custody after being accused by an FBI informant of masterminding a series of political arsons in Oregon in 2001. Tre fled to Canada, but was later arrested there, held, and ultimately extradited back to the US after being denied political asylum. Prior to his flight and ultimate arrest, Tre was a prominent organizer and activist working to protect Oregon's ancient forests, including Eagle Creek, a major drinking water supply source for the state's citizens. Tre gained widespread public recognition for his 11 day occupation of a 9 in. wide ledge on the Forest Service Building downtown.

Having recently completed his sentence, Tre will speak publicly for the first time about his activism, his case, his extradition, and his prison hunger strike.

Calais: Repression and Resistance

United Kingdom, 11.02.2010 12:39

On Sunday 7th February, French Police attacked the Kronstadt Hangar as part of an ongoing campaign of repression against migrants, which began in July 2009. The Hangar had been hired by the No Border Network and the French organisation, SôS Soutien aux Sans Papiers, as an autonomous space for migrants and activists struggling for the right to freedom of movement. Before the Hangar was opened, migrants had been meeting up outside the night shelter during the day, but the night shelter had finally closed at about the time the hangar opened its doors on Saturday 6th February. At about 5pm on that day, police began appearing outside the Hangar in an attempt to prevent migrants entering. At 7 pm migrants who had attended an NGO Food distribution point away from the hangar, managed to break through police lines in order to get inside, where they spent the night.

At lunchtime the following day, migrants left the Hangar to attend another food distribution point, and on their return, once again found all roads to the hangar blockaded by police who then smashed their way into the hangar with a battering ram, arresting the 12 activists who had remained inside. Having illegally evicted the building, police then welded it shut.

Upon their release, activists discovered that police had been roaming the area arresting migrants they came across. Many migrants were believed to have gone into hiding, whilst others grouped together to offer resistance. Activists and migrants are now regrouping to consider their next moves.

On Tuesday 9th February, a solidarity demonstration was held outside the french Consulate in London. The handed out leaflets demanding "an immediate end of the repression against volunteers in Calais and the opening of the border between the UK and France! The transnational NoBorders Network will continue its work in Calais. The authorities in Calais have been trying to remove migrants from Calais for years without success, because they are in denial about the terminal reality of the un-equal world we live in. This is not over, solidarity and resistance for the right to freedom of movement will continue."
