Protest against John Yoo

United States, 21.02.2010 17:38

Accused war criminal John Yoo spoke at the Federalist Society on Thursday. As one can tell by our signs, we're not in any doubt as to Yoo's guilt. There's a very strong case against Yoo that was brought by Jose Padilla, the fellow who spent several years in solitary confinement and suffered severe mental damage as a result. BLAST FROM YER PAST: Cartoon by Mike Flugennock: "Haig For Life!"

DC, 21.02.2010 00:10

(This cartoon first appeared in the Yipster Times, NYC, March 1982) Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the President, the Vice President and the Secretary of State in that order, and should the President decide he wants to transfer the helm to the Vice President, he will do so. He has not done that. As of now, I am in control here, in the White House, pending return of the Vice President and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course. –Secretary of State, fmr. Gen. Alexander Haig, speaking to reporters after the assassination attempt on President Reagan Ahh, who can forget Alexander Haig — White House Chief of Staff under Nixon, Secretary of State under Reagan, Allied Supreme Being in Europe, a guy who looks like he could play himself in a Bourne movie? And, who can forget that memorable occasion — while we’re on the subject of the media and government getting weird together — when in answer to some question or another, Secretary Haig blurts out an assertion that he was “in control here” following the assassination attempt on Reagan downtown? From the Washington Post: Alexander Haig, Former Secretary of State, Dies

An Open Letter to DC Vegans and Animal Rights Activists

DC, 21.02.2010 00:10

While my opinions and experiences cannot speak for everyone’s, every single woman that I have talked to about this has been so immeasurably pissed off that the conversation ends right then and there. “I just can’t talk about that.” There are so many fucked up aspects of the analogy between consuming animal products and sexual assault. We all know the statistics, right? 1 in 6 women will be assaulted in our lifetime. 73% of survivors knew our assaulters. More than 50% of rape and sexual assault incidents are reported to occur in or 1 mile of the survivor’s home.

Protests in solidarity with Yarl's Wood hunger strikers

United Kingdom, 21.02.2010 00:09

A mass hunger strike by migrant women detained at Yarl's Wood immigration prison in Bedfordshire has been ongoing since 5th February, 2010. The hunger strike, which involved some 84 women at the start, was sparked by detainees demanding that "the frustration and humiliation of all foreign nationals [in detention] ends now" (see demands below).

On 8th February, a violet attempt by Serco security guards to break up the protest saw 70 women being locked in a corridor for up to 8 hours without access to food, water, toilet or medical care. Many collapsed and about 20, who climbed out of a window, were beaten up and taken into isolation cells. Four of the women, singled out as 'ringleaders', were taken to Bedford police station and subsequently transferred to HMP Holloway prison in London, without being charged with any offence or brought before a judge.

A number of protests in solidarity with the hunger strikers have taken place. On 10th February, students and campaigners held a two-day solidarity hunger strike at the London offices of Serco, the private security company that runs Yarl's Wood. Two days later, on 12th February, a noisy demo was held outside Serco's offices, with around 50 people present. 84 Northwest No Borders activists also took part in a 24-hour fast in solidarity with the 84 detainees on hunger strike. 66 people in Bradford also took part in a one-day solidarity hunger strike. On 17th February, a protest was held outside HMP Holloway in solidarity with the 'Yarl's Wood four'. Another protest at the Serco offices in London has been called for Friday, 26th February.

A similar mass hunger strike in Yarl's Wood in June last year was met with violent assaults on detainees by Serco security guards. Again, a solidarity protest was held at the company's offices in London, where protesters sneaked a look at its 'protest response plan'.

DC, 20.02.2010 01:10

I met Safiya in the visiting room of the Federal Correctional Institution (for women) in Dublin, California, in 1997—but when we embraced, it felt as if I’d known her all my life. At the time, Safiya was traveling to various prisons, visiting political prisoners to talk with us about Jericho ’98, the national campaign, beginning with a march rally to the White House, that she was organizing (with Herman and Iyaluua Ferguson, political prisoner Jalil Muntaqim, and others). I was in Dublin, along with six other women political prisoners...

Going Postal: Don't Feed The Beast, Starve It

DC, 20.02.2010 01:10

Joe Stack is a symptom of the unbearable life of Americans. In the past week we've seen two well publicized cases of “going postal”: those of Amy Bishop and Joe Stack. While Amy Bishop's case rests upon what will likely be found to be a personality disorder and Joe Stack's case looks more like an act of war against the powers that be, few people seem to ask the question: “What triggers people to do things like this…?”

Stand Together Against Police Violence March 3PM Friday

Portland, 19.02.2010 21:39

Rally and March in response to the recent murder of Aaron Campbell by Portland Police, and the perpetual violence perpetrated by police in our communities.

Pioneer Square @ 3pm on Friday the 19th!

Tomorrow, we are calling for the citizens of Portland to stand strong together against the violence inherent to the policing system. We have asked our fellow students to join us in walking out of classes and into the streets. We now extend our invitation to our teachers and professors, as well as to all of the many members of Portland's diverse communities. We will not be passive observers to the continued brutalization of our friends, neighbors and families, but instead will stand strong in opposition to those who would marginalize and attempt to quell our outrage.

See you in the streets!
love and unity,
Students for Revolutionary Action

"ONE STRUGGLE-ONE FIGHT" An Intergenerational Political Prisoner Support Panel

Portland, 19.02.2010 19:39

-Friday, Feb 19 @ 5pm
Reed College-3203 SE Woodstock Boulevard
Eliot 314
-Saturday, Feb 20th @6pm
Red and Black Cafe
400 Se 12th Ave

'One struggle, one fight' - it can be an elusive concept. Please join
this panel of speakers as they talk about the Animal Enterprise
Terrorism Act, the Green Scare, COINTELPRO and how they relate to each
other. The aim of this panel is to explore how movements struggling for fundamental change can persevere over the long term in the face of state repression. This will be a benefit for the AETA 4, four activists in the Bay Area being prosecuted as "terrorists" for their beliefs. All money raised will go to their legal defense fund. In addition, this event will hopefully plant the seeds of solidarity and cross-pollination between movements.

Speakers: Lauren Regan (Civil Liberties Defense Center), Nadia Winsted
(grand jury resistor), Claude Marks (Freedom Archives, former political prisoner), Jeffrey Luers (former political prisoner, environmental activist), and Walidah Imarisha (historian, hip-hop artist).

No one turned away for lack of funds.

Vobro kills: Protest at Brodnica against young worker death cover-up

Torun, 19.02.2010 18:37

image 6267

source

On the 16th of April 2008 in the Vobro sweet factory in Brodnica, 21 year old Krzysztof Pruszewicz died in a work accident. Despite numerous claimed deviations and obvious violations of labor rights by the employer, the prosecutor didn’t claim that anyone was guilty and chose not to carry out any investigations. The deceased’s family has made a legal complaint about this. On 11 September 2008, the Regional Court in Brodnica considered the complaint.

At yesterday’s event many other local and national media were present. The prosecutor clearly spoke from the point of view of defending the employer. The Court did not take a final decision. The next sitting about the case will occur later in September.

Direct action shuts down H&K

United Kingdom, 19.02.2010 10:39

Activists have shut down the premises of arms dealers Heckler & Koch for the day. Anti-arms trade campaigners occupied the roof of the building and blockaded both gates to the Lenton site. Police have been refusing to allow any one to enter or leave the Easter Park industrial estate.

According to reports, the protesters entered the site at around 6am. The final lock on was not removed until around 12.30pm. The rooftop occupiers agreed to come down once the blockade was lifted. Those arrested were taken to Bridewell police station.

H&K is the world's second largest manufacturer of small arms and have been used by child soldiers in Africa, mercenaries in Iraq and criminal gangs in Serbia. The Easter Park premises are the company's UK headquarters. The Shut Down H&K campaign have been picketing and campaigning against the company's activities in Nottingham since 2008.

The Great Bi-Partisan Deception

DC, 17.02.2010 23:10

Some cancer is too aggressive even for chemotherapy. The US political system is infected with such a disease; and we may be witnessing the first death spasms. In a country ravaged by war and economic crisis, with tens of millions of people suffering, politicians are capable of doing absolutely nothing to help ordinary people. The only two “achievements” of the Democrat’s super majority in the Senate — over the course of five months — were an ineffectual stimulus package and a “surge” of troops in Afghanistan…

BNP difficulties in Notts

United Kingdom, 15.02.2010 19:38

Anti-fascists in Nottinghamshire have expressed pleasure at the BNP's drubbing in a by-election held in the Hucknall Central ward for a seat on Ashfield District Council following the death of the incumbent Tory councillor. The BNP would normally be expected to benefit from a low-turnout, but only managed 7.5% on a 32% turnout, coming fifth behind UKIP.

Compounding the BNP's problems, a group calling themselves "Broxtowe Reds" claim to have vandalised vehicles belonging to Dave and Nina Brown with paint stripper. The Browns are local BNP councillors who turned against the party leadership following Sadie Graham's expulsion from the party, but have now returned to the fold.

Meanwhile, autonomous anti-fascists in Nottingham have produced the first edition of a newsletter dubbed, "Burnt Flag." The newsletter includes analysis of the EDL's visit to the city in December last year, a record of anti-fascist actions through 2009 and a report on the second leaking of the BNP's membership list.

Agence France-Presse.
