That support was key to the most important victory of Serbia’s workers over the past eight years: on March 1st 2007, Jugoremedija became the first factory in Serbia controlled by its workers-shareholders. Today the Jugoremedija workers-shareholders are supporting the struggle of other Zrenjanin workers for their rights.

AARM Newsletter Hits the Streets

Rochester, 07.03.2010 00:07

The latest edition of the Activists Against Racism Movement (AARM) newsletter has been published and is circulating around Rochester. The newsletter, which focuses on the issue of mayor control of the Rochester City Schools, includes articles from both members of AARM and the community discussing why we need to oppose the proposed takeover.

AARM has been active in releasing newsletters to the community, having already produced two since the start of 2010. I talked with Tim Adams, who works closely on the paper, to discuss the content of this edition, how they make the newsletter, why they do it, and more.

Rochester Free School: Interviews

Rochester, 07.03.2010 00:07

The Rochester Free School is an all-volunteer, DIY, educational organization. We believe education is a right rather than a privilege. Rochester Free School works to de-commodify and de-institutionalize education with free classes open to all. The Free School currently has classes running on Crochet, Web Design, Anarchism, Feminism, Writing, and more. Visit the website at for a full and up-to-date list of all our classes.

The free school operates in a horizontal manner and tries to break down the boundaries between "teacher" and "student." We decided to conduct our interview in a similar way. Three members of the Free School, Caitlin Holcombe, Ronni Kobrosly, and Ben Dean-Kawamura, took turns being interviewer and interviewee. Below, we talk about what attracted us to the Free School, what we see as its strengths and shortcomings, and where we would like the Free School to go in 2010.

Ben:

What got you interested in the Free School? What motivates you to work on building it up?

Roni:

I first heard about the Free School through Caitlin and KT, two folks there were already involved with the Flying Squirrel community space. The idea really excited me because the people involved with the project seemed to have lots of diverse skills I wanted to develop (art, community organizing). Also, as someone who has spent a chunk of their life in higher education, I really appreciate how radical the concept of a Free School is. It seems to me that nowadays "education" and "knowledge" have become commodified. The Free School is 100% grassroots, which is great! The people in this community have so many skills and so much knowledge, it's such a great idea to create a space where everyone can freely share this!

What keeps my motivated about this project is its potential. In other big US cities, like Seattle, free schools have become community institutions!

How about you Caitlin, what got you interested in the free school? What purposes do you think it could serve in the community?

"No Olympics on Stolen Native Land!" A Rochester Indymedia Recap of the Anti-Olympic Protests in Vancouver

Rochester, 07.03.2010 00:07

On February 9th, two Rochester Indymedia journalists started their journey to Vancouver, unceded and occupied Coast Salish Territory to cover the 2010 anti-Olympic resistance movement.

Anti-Olympic organizers called for a convergence of anti-colonial and anti-capitalist forces in Vancouver, February 10-15, 2010, to confront and disrupt the 2010 Olympic Games. These dates were chosen to coincide with the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics (Feb. 12, 2010). The entire Winter Games ran from Feb 12-28, 2010. The slogan under which the convergence coalesced was, "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land!"

UPDATE: Students, Workers, Supporters March on the MTA (Images + Video)

NYC, 06.03.2010 07:09

Yesterday, as college students were walking out, teaching in and rallying at universities citywide and nationwide, thousands of local high school students were streaming out of school gates and into the streets of New York. It was by far the largest protest to hit the State or the MTA since the Authority's decision to eliminate the free Student MetroCard last December. Joined by teachers, parents, transit workers, CUNY students and others, the students rallied at the office of embattled Governor Paterson and marched to the MTA hearings. Rush-hour traffic was blocked from Third Avenue to Seventh Avenue.

Students, Education Workers Nationwide Rise Up to Defend Public Education on March 4

United States, 06.03.2010 04:07

Nationwide demonstrations took place on Thursday, as students and education workers rose up against budget cuts, layoffs, fee hikes, and the system that prioritizes war and prisons over schools. Demonstrations took place at over 100 campuses in at least 39 states. The most militant actions took place in California. In Oakland, over 200 people shut down Interstate 880, resulting in a mass arrest. In Davis, protesters also tried to take over an Interstate. Thousands rallied in Sacramento, and in Santa Cruz, the UCSC campus was effectively shut down by 5am.

Sizable demonstrations also happened in Chicago, Minneapolis, New York City, Portland, Syracuse, Champaign, Baltimore and in Milwaukee, where 18 protesters were arrested.

March 4 - Students Stage Actions Nationwide

LA, 06.03.2010 01:39

LOS ANGELES - March 5, 2010 – Nationwide student demonstrations took place yesterday. Here in Southern California reports are still coming in of actions on the campus of every public university and college in the region. Additionally at a large march and rally in downtown Los Angeles students, parents and teachers marched against privatization of the public schools at the K through 12 level.

UCLA students staged a 5 hour sit-in at the chancellor’s office demanding to met with him. The only response from the office was from a vice chancellor who stated that there would be no statement or meeting. In addition to the sit-in there were a number of rallies, marches and teach-ins on the UCLA campus. UCSD, UCR, UCSB, Cal State Northridge and many others are also reporting sizable student actions throughout the day. No arrests or incidents of police violence have been reported on any of the South California campuses. However there are some disturbing reports of mass arrests and police violence at some campus in the bay area. See IndyBay for more on Northern California student actions. SchNEWS: University Challenged

United Kingdom, 05.03.2010 20:39

Students at Sussex University came into violent conflict with riot cops on Wednesday (3rd) as they occupied the executive nerve centre of their university. Several weeks in the planning by Stop the Cuts campaign in association with the university's Anarchist Society, around 80 students rushed the 'fortified' Sussex House building with a supporting demo outside of around 300 people, all in protest against the proposed cuts to university funding. The occupation was part of a national day of action, called against £950m of government cuts to higher education announced on February 1st. There were also actions in Norwich, Leeds and London.

PSU Marches Fourth!!

Portland, 05.03.2010 17:38

altaltalt

Why is it that neoliberal banks and corporations are bailed out while students are squeezed of every last penny by predatory student loans amidst our financial feeding frenzy?

On March 4th, over 400 students, community members and professors protested on the Park Blocks of Portland State University in solidarity with a national call to defend public education. Several student groups in collaboration with student government organized the rally as a direct response to the proposed economic deregulation and restructuring of PSU.

Students feel that the state funded institution is augmenting corporate interests while diminishing the quality, affordability and access to higher education. Students demonstrated their bravery by walking out of class at 1pm to express their heightened level of disgust and indignation with administrative ineptness and bureaucratic subterfuge. Speakers discussed the financial mismanagement of the education system in order to keep those who might be agents of social change in debt and bondage.

Local drumming troupe; Powder Keg led students, faculty and the public in a rigorous display of resistance to the neo-liberal capitalist vision of 'education' presented by the administration and board. The crowd proceeded to march across campus, occupying the hallways of the administration offices. There they presented the following demands agreed upon by students at all three of the universities in the Oregon University System:

Lionel is Dead: Executed By ODFW

Portland, 04.03.2010 18:38

New Page 1

Tonight, Lionel is dead. He was a healthy, friendly, gregarious sea lion who we were worriedly watching. We knew that he was among the animals absurdly listed by ODFW on their infamous hit list - a list of animals "observed eating at least one fish" at Bonneville dam, and therefore targeted for death. So when he showed up back in the ancient feeding grounds on the Columbia, near what was once Celilo Falls, we knew that the ODFW would be gunning for him. Today, when he hauled out of the cool water to sun himself in the warm spring air, he was trapped by ODFW and the Army Corps of Engineers. A short time later, he was injected with a lethal poison that stopped his heart, and he was killed.

If you are tired of this needless, sad killing, here are some things you can do:

1. JOIN US TOMORROW AT THE DAM IN PROTEST AGAINST THIS KILLING. We will be carpooling from the office of NW In Defense of Animals (1732 NE Alberta St, on the corner of NE 18th and Alberta Streets) at 10:30am sharp. We will meet at Bonneville Dam on the Washington side at 11:30am. Tell your friends, we could use some help. Speak up against the killing. If you have questions, please contact NW In Defense of Animals at (503)249-9996 or email Matt Rossell at matt@idausa.org.

Sheriff Stanek landing Fed cash for KingFish military cellphone tracker in Hennepin County

United States, 04.03.2010 07:07

National Guard intelligence analysts fuse to metro police departments; Lobby for warrantless wiretaps in St. Paul

A source revealed a new move in the profitable world of government tracking goodiez: Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek lost out on nearly half a million dollars to buy a very secret advanced cell phone tracking kit called "KingFish" manufactured by Harris Corporation, when the Hennepin County Board deemed it expensive and possibly unconstitutional; he doesn't want to talk about it, the Star Tribune reported recently. However, he is apparently now going to get some kind of secret grant from the Feds to get KingFish anyway, probably paid via DHS or DOJ grant programs (much as Edina got a silly $182K police battletank). Will the Hennepin County Board be able to obtain the truth at today's meeting?

Also a couple proposals including the "Kelsey Smith" bill (HF2639/SF2470) are going through the Legislature to let the police instantaneously locate cell phones without warrants, under the excuse of abduction emergencies, although this bill's language is frighteningly unrestricted... READ MORE
