Anti-Torture Action Confronts Judge Bybee in SF

San Francisco Bay Area, 15.03.2010 06:39

Cynthia Papermaster describes a Bybee Action at the Ninth Circuit Court in San Francisco on March 10th: In the past we've had only a few seconds to say something before Bybee disappeared at the end, but this time we caught a break when the gavel came down. Proctor Hug, the first of the three judges headed for the exit, was moving very slowly, leaving Bybee waiting and fully exposed for at least three minutes...

Hidden in Plain Sight: Media Workers for Social Change, Chapter 4

San Francisco Bay Area, 15.03.2010 04:39

Chapter four of this series is Peter M's profile of Oakland's Favianna Rodriguez. By any measure she is a successful poster artist, businesswoman and organizer. She organizes other progressive artists into projects, such as the mural that went up last year on the side of the Oakland Museum. She is a role model for up-and-coming Latina artists, proving in her life that sí se puede-yes it can be done.

Roundup: Police Chief Dolan's Reappointment Approved 8-5

United States, 15.03.2010 00:07

Friday at Minneapolis City Hall, Tim Dolan was reappointed as Chief of the Minneapolis Police Department by an 8-5 vote over widespread community opposition. Dolan’s original appointment in 2006 was approved 12-1, and since then his department has overseen the repression of dissent before and after the 2008 RNC; multiple police killings of people of color including Fong Lee; several expensive settlements resulting from false arrests, taser use, and police brutality; the Metro Gang Strike Force scandal; and a culture of disrespect for the law as it applies to police and for the human rights of Minneapolis residents.

The reappointment has also stirred controversy over the last month amongst the Civilian Review Authority (CRA), a somewhat powerless but sometimes pesky body whose chair, Don Bellfield, has stifled criticism of the MPD and cancelled a statute-mandated meeting after a recent public hearing on Dolan. Below: Roundup of the Vote Friday and Related Coverage

Open Letter to US Attorney from Tarek Mehanna Support Committee

Boston, 14.03.2010 18:09

On Friday, March 12, members of the Tarek Mehanna Support Committee attempted for the second time to meet with a representative of the Massachusetts US Attorney's office. Again we were told to fill out a complaint form--there was no one at the office who could speak to us. We asked whether it was the explicit policy of the new US Attorney not to meet with concerned members of the public. The "Administrative Specialist" insisted that this was not the policy of the office, but couldn't explain why our calls, faxes and our formal complaint remained unanswered.

“Crude: The Real Price of Oil”

Rogue Valley, 14.03.2010 17:39

The Jackson County Pacific Greens will present a showing of the documentary film, “Crude: The Real Price of Oil” on Sunday, March 21st at 7PM at the Ashland Library. There will be a social hour beginning at 6pm.

Filmmaker Joe Berlinger’s provocative film explores the battle waged by 30,000 indigenous Ecuadorians against Chevron for dumping billions of gallons of toxic waste into the Amazon, what some have called the “Amazon Chernobyl!"

"Crude" is a real-life high stakes legal drama, set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, the media, multi-national corporations, and rapidly disappearing indigenous cultures.

While the environmental impact of the consumption of fossil fuels has been documented for years, this film focuses on the human costs of our addiction to oil and the increasingly difficult task of holding corporations accountable for their past deeds.

Action against cuts in Nottingham

United Kingdom, 12.03.2010 18:09

On March 8th, Nottingham City Council met to approve the 2010/11 budget. Like many council budgets this included a series of cuts to services, in this case amounting to £18.8 million. Nottingham City Unison called a lunchtime protest outside the Council House to show their opposition. Disabled campaigners blocked the tram to express their anger at the proposals.

Council plans to close Victoria Leisure Centre, which were brought forward to save money, have also faced opposition and their is growing dissent about plans to close libraries in Wilford and Beechdale.

Unison's protest coincides with the first day of a foty-eight hour national strike by members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) over attacks on their redundancy scheme. In Nottingham strikers marched from Castle Meadow to the International Community Centre (ICC) for a rally.

Snowball Fight: Officer Drew a Gun at "Anarchists not Citizens"

DC, 12.03.2010 01:10

I was driven smack in the middle of the snow ball fight, on 14 street and U. People of all walks of life and ages were having a ball, divided ad-hoc across U street, throwing snow balls at each other and laughing. later, I got to the internet and was shocked at the news that a cop drew out his gun. In the police investigation report of this incident, Kris Bowman with the Fraternal Order of Police stated: "they were anarchists not citizens at the scene that had clubs that had shields and they threatened the detective and he drew his weapon as a result. He did not wave his gun at anyone."

Born in 1910 in Laconia, New Hampshire, she attended Emerson College and lived through two world wars and the Great Depression. She was an activist for her community and for her country, remaining active until the return of chronic respiratory problems four days ago

5 More Sea Lions Die Today

Portland, 11.03.2010 20:39

According to ODFW spokesman Rick Hargrave, seven sea lions were trapped today [3/9/10]. Of those, five were allegedly on the government hit list - the list of animals who have been "observed eating at least one salmon." As a result, according to Hargrave, all five were to be put to death some time today. We were unable to confirm with him when the event took place - he said he "wouldn't know till the end of the day." At the end of the day, of course, he was unavailable. He was clear, however, that the sea lions would be killed. Rick Hargrave may be contacted by calling (503) 947-6020 or faxing (971) 673-6070. [ Read More ]

Grecja: strajk generalny - relacja na żywo z protestów

Poland, 11.03.2010 19:10

W Atenach, wg. zachodnich korporacyjnych demonstruje ponad 25 tysięcy osób, doszło do walk z oddziłami prewencji, która użyła wobec tłumu granatów hukowych i gazu łzawiącego. Do protestów wlaczyła się też część policjantów - to grupa zawodowa która również dużo straci przez rządowy program oszczędności
