NW IDA PRESS RELEASE concerning the sea lions and the sea wolf

Portland, 30.03.2010 20:39

Activists keep 24-hour vigil over sea lion killing program; more sea lions may be
trapped this morning in a "fishy situation" behind a visual barrier on the trap.

Cascade Locks, Ore.-In Defense of Animals and Sea Lion Defense Brigade has launched
a volunteer based vigil to track government trapping and killing, with the "Sea
Wolf," an RV mobile monitoring vehicle stationed on the Washington side of Columbia
River near the Bonneville Dam. The Sea Wolf is painted with a beautiful river
wildlife mural depicting salmon and sea lions swimming. (see attached photos of the
Sea Wolf on site at the dam.)

BREAKING: WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE TRAPS?

Our monitor witnessed something strange going on late last night. She was concerned because there were a number of sea lions hauled out in one of the traps. She saw them going in shortly before sundown, and could still hear them murmuring in the dark. Then.... She saw a vehicle pull slowly along the bank on the island above the traps. As it approached the traps, the headlights were turned off, and the vehicle slowly crept along to the area directly above the traps, from which they are usually sprung. It was a heart wrenching experience for the monitor who stood on the opposite bank, unable to help the sea lions in this moment of danger. The same monitor also witnessed three pick up trucks sitting along the bank on the Washington side, in the rain and dark of night, as the area was supposed to be closing to visitors.

Five Steps to Reviving Your Failing Anarchist News Web Site

Boston, 29.03.2010 22:09

1. Use a real host provider. Hosting your site in your sketchy friend's basement might seem like a great way to save a hundred and twenty bucks a year, as well as making you feel all edgy and hackerish, but when your sketchy friend doesn't pay his electric bill and gets cut off your site goes down. Eventually your readers will get sick of this sort of thing and go back to getting their anarchist news from Google searches. Professional web hosting companies, while not perfect, can at least be counted on not to let your site disappear for a week with no warning.

DC Peace Of The Action Kicked out of Capital Building for trying to protest

Portland, 29.03.2010 21:39

Reporting on the Peace of the Action (POTA) attempt to go to a hearing on war funding gets nixed ...Cops follow activists and eventually stifle free speech

POTA were dogged and followed the moment they stepped on to the Capital property. They were informed they couldn't protest at all inside or it would be a federal crime and you would be put in jail overnight and not released till they seen a judge. The group was met standing in the tour line outside ...singled out with at least 5 cops informing (intimidating) them of what they were not able to do. As Cindy told them ...are you telling this to everyone or just us?.

Cindy Sheehan at one point went up some stairs and was taken to the exit immediately. One member took a picture of a cop and he demanding her to delete the picture.

Tenant Rights Project Holds Second Picket Of Downtown Portland Slumlord

Portland, 29.03.2010 21:39

Tenant Rights Project, together with community allies, on March 24 held a second picket and protest at downtown Portland nonprofit slumlord admin office, of Central City Concern, over retaliatory eviction notices, and violations of Oregon's landlord-tenant law. Activists also talked at Portland City Council before the picket.
The informational picket included housing activists, students from Reed and Willamette, and included a number of picket signs protesting recent retaliatory eviction notices against tenant activists, lack of livability and habitability in CCC housing units and buildings, and lack of transparency by the CCC board of directors.

CCC is a $33,000,000 per year landlord, with about $50,000,000 in capital projects in addition. Tenant organizers have sent three demand letters to the CCC board of directors requesting better pest control, better repairs, safety improvements to the buildings, and requesting that tenants be allowed to attend and speak at CCC monthly board meetings, held on a Wednesday evening once a month at the CCC admin office where last Wednesday's picket was held, at the corner of NW 6th and Everett streets.

The vigil lasted from 3 - 7 PM

No More Killings! No More Cops!

Portland, 29.03.2010 17:39

Today marks the 2 month anniversary of the execution of Aaron Campbell at his doorstep by officer Ronald Frashour. Aaron, a father of four, had been taking care of his brother Timothy who was slowly passing away from kidney failure, in the months prior to his death. Daily Aaron nursed him and kept his brother company at his bed side at OHSU. On January 29th Aarons brother passed. The intense grief and stress of months of slowly watching his brother fade led Aaron to a break down. Having no one else to turn to his girlfriend made a call to the Portland Police in hopes that they would calm Aaron; instead, officer Ronald Frashour murdered Aaron at his door step. Shooting him in back with his AR-15 assault riffle.

Schwarzenegger stomps on the North Coast Water Board

Rogue Valley, 29.03.2010 11:40

On January 24th in Eureka the North Coast Water Board approved the long-awaited plan to clean up agricultural and other pollution in the Klamath River. Drafts of the plan included a mandate for PacifiCorp - owner of five Klamath River dams - to clean up toxic algae growing in its reservoirs. But the Governor's Office ordered that mandate scrapped in favor of a deal worked out with the company in separate closed-door negotiations. The article explains why and speculates on how tribes and environmental groups will respond.

Students Chained to University Status for 8 Hours

DC, 29.03.2010 01:11

Georgetown Students Chained for 8 Hours to Founder Statue, Win Response from University Washington, D.C. - Georgetown students chained themselves to the statue of the university’s founder on Saturday for 8 hours in the cold. The students, members of Plan A: Hoyas for Reproductive Justice, called on the university to issue a meeting to discuss their demands to lift the school's ban on comprehensive sex education, contraception, reproductive resources, and free speech. The students were finally unchained at 8:00pm, after being chained at 12:00pm, when a university official delivered letters from the administration stating that a meeting will be held on Tuesday. The students have been calling for this meeting for two months, after initially delivering a letter. “This was a great success for the Plan A campaign, expanding the issue out of the Georgetown’s gates and linking it to the similar situation in DC with the Catholic Church. It showed we are ready to stop at nothing to get justice,” said student Julia Shindel. Professor Dana Luciano, Chair of the Women's and Gender Studies Program, says "The issues raised by the Plan A campaign lie at the heart of our ideals as a university: our commitment to cura personalis and to social justice, to free intellectual inquiry and to religious pluralism."

Protesters Say "No Sit and Lie Laws"

San Francisco Bay Area, 28.03.2010 17:40

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will soon be voting on a law that would make it illegal to sit or lie on any sidewalk in San Francisco. On March 27th, actions were held across San Francisco to educate local residents that historically sit/lie laws have been discriminative in nature, and are unnecessary. San Francisco had a sit and lie law in the late 1960's through the 70's, but it was ultimately struck down because it was found to be unconstitutional.

This past Spring Equinox weekend(March 20th) marked our 4th annual Native Games Tournament, hosted this year by Red Earth Descendants, the Native American Student Union of SOU and the Ashland Youth Council. We'd like to extend our appreciation and thank you's to the MANY people who helped bring the Games, once again, to the community in such a good way. It was a beautiful gathering--for the youth and the elders and all us in-betweeners. Blessed by ample sunshine, wonderful community support and good food, as always, we had a very successful tournament that involved the more competitive teams as well as some clinic-style games teaching young people how to play.

SchNEWS: A Twist of Fete

United Kingdom, 27.03.2010 13:09

"It's rapidly becoming obvious that this is a nationwide issue - somehow the police have got it into their heads that music and dancing are bad for society. They've used the licensing laws as a weapon." - Strawberry Fair organiser

In what is fast becoming a summer tradition, yet another gathering has fallen victim to party-pooping police tactics. The UK's last free open-air festival has been cancelled under police pressure. Strawberry Fair, in Cambridge, viewed by many as the starting gun for the festival season, has been stopped in its tracks after 37 straight years. Some (on Facebook at least) are vowing that some kind of festival will go ahead anyway.

Vigil for Peace on 7th Anniversary of Iraq Invasion

Rochester, 27.03.2010 03:17

Between 60 and 70 people gathered at noon on the corner of East Ave. and South Goodman St. to demand an end to the U.S. wars of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan. March 19 was the 7th anniversary of the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. While President Obama promised to end the war, he has not done so and many of the US troops withdrawn have been replaced by private "contractors"—also known as mercenaries.

Peace vigils at this location are held every Sunday at noon, sponsored by Peace Action & Education—a task force of Metro Justice. Usually 10 to 20 people attend. Today's gathering was considerably larger due to the war anniversary. People from Rochester also traveled to Washington DC to join a crowd of 12,000 in a similar action at the White House.

Community Asks Duffy, "Why Avoid Open Debate?"

Rochester, 27.03.2010 03:17

While members of the Rochester Business Alliance ate breakfast for $45 a plate inside the Riverside Convention Center, students, parents, and community members gathered outside for a "People's Breakfast" to draw attention to the exclusionary nature of the event.

Myra Brown, a member of the Community Education Task Force discussed the event, "$45 to a person to be able to come and get in on the conversation. I think that it's wrong to put that kind of a price on people having a voice — particularly people who are directly impacted by this issue." Others added that the 7:30 starting time made the event next to impossible to attend for many parents and students.

One parent who made it out was Mary Adams. She said Duffy has a history of avoiding open debate. "He will carefully select his audiences and the format in which he speaks so that he does not need to face critical questions or address opposing viewpoints. [Duffy has repeatedly said] that he went to a school meeting and sat in with parents at school of the arts. I was at that meeting, that was not billed as a Duffy presentation. In fact, I did not know that he and his entourage were going to show up until he was there. He talked to us and talked to us and talked to us about pretty superficial things having to do with his ideas about education. Parents actually had to interrupt him in order to get any chance to say anything."

Some members of the breakfast decided to try to enter the building without paying the $45 price tag. They were immediately grabbed and pushed out of the building.

Indy TV # 34: Rated F

Rochester, 27.03.2010 03:17

Members of Rated F, a year old local Feminist organization, join us this week on Indy TV to talk about their work in Rochester and how you can get involved in organizing around feminist and queer issues.

According to co-founder of the organization, Sady Fisher, "Rated F is a grassroots Feminist organization that primarily focuses on education around sexuality, identity and expression; and on challenging societal expectations about many of these issues."

The Rated F website explains the Herstory of the group: "There aren’t many opportunities for women to have honest, open conversations around feminist and queer issues. So we thought we’d begin to create those opportunities for ourselves and other women, by developing workshops and events that dissect sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism, ageism, etc. in all of their forms from a sex-positive, feminist, affirming perspective.

We want to instill a sense of sisterhood and togetherness between women in this community, and organize around issues that matter to us. We focus on education and activism around feminist, gender and queer issues but are interested in being involved in any activities that empower and support women."

US human rights record challenged by the Indian Nations

DC, 27.03.2010 02:40

"This important piece from Indian Country Today, offers a small window into major issues faced by Indigenous peoples in the US. Unfortunately, it only covers those of us who are documented and recognized as Indigenous; never those who have been written out of history as if they no longer exist. So many have been lost in the struggle that it may be impossible to tell how many of us survive. Given our history, it is truly a miracle that any of us remember who we are." Sharon Smith

PREPARE FOR MARCH 29th: AFFINITY GROUPS AND THE BLACK BLOC

Portland, 27.03.2010 02:39

In response to the brutal murder of a PDX community member we encourage all people who desire to protect and avenge their communities to form affinity groups.
These affinity groups will act as small autonomous groups taking actions they feel are appropriate.

Affinity groups allow for more efficient communication between folks involved in the attack and defense of themselves, their comrades and all involved with the march or action. Creating spokes councils to coordinate with other affinity groups (who you know and trust) also encourage more successful actions.
Forming affinity groups also encourages the use of a diversity of tactics. Each group can safely and securely decide what are appropriate actions for them to participate in. These groups do not take actions on behalf of anyone but themselves therefore are free to do what they feel is most effective.

Independent Police Review- Wednesday, March 31 to City Hall (1221 SW 4th Av)

Friends

Please come out next Wednesday, March 31 to City Hall (1221 SW 4th Av) for
the continuation on the hearing regarding strengthening the "Independent"
Police Review Division (IPR). There will be public testimony allowed--it's
just not clear whether the people who spoke on the 18th will be able to
speak again.

Officer shot and killed a homeless man carrying what's been described as a
crafts knife inbetween the historic March 18 first hearing about
strengthening the IPR (the professional office in the Auditor's portfolio
that includes the city's "police review board," the Citizen Review
Committee) and the continuation of that hearing, which is coming up next
week.
