Protests against 'Great' British Circus continue

United Kingdom, 20.04.2010 13:09

Since the notorious Great British Circus pitched up in Nottingham last Tuesday, there have been daily demonstrations by animal rights protesters outside. The protesters are angry that the circus uses animals for the "medieval" entertainment of punters with scant regard for their welfare. The circus uses tigers, zebras, camels and horses kept in "woefully small" cages for most of their lives.

Forcing animals to perform in travelling circuses, which is condemned by the RSPCA as "very harmful", may soon become illegal. Animal circuses are already banned on most council land across the country because of the cruelty and a recent Bristol university study into circus animal welfare came to damning conclusions.

On Sunday, 30 activists came to the demonstration at the circus' current venue, the Japanese Water Gardens in Toton, and other successful demonstrations were held last week. The activists are calling for concerned people to demonstrate the circus at its next venue in Leicester, when it arrives on Tue 27th.

Counter-Protesters Take On Tea Parties on Tax Day

San Francisco Bay Area, 19.04.2010 13:39

On April 15th, Tax Day, a right wing organization called Bay Area Patriots held a Tea Party attended by about 200 people in Union Square in the late afternoon. Earlier in the day a similar group, who said they were inspired by Speaker Pelosi's characterization of the Tea Party movement as artificial, held an anti-Pelosi protest in Civic Center that drew only a handful of demonstrators. At both events, seasoned San Francisco mocktivists found plenty to make fun of.

April AARM Newsletter OUT NOW!

Rochester, 18.04.2010 23:37

This issue of the AARM Newsletter is our most extensive yet, offering some of the most honest and direct writings we’ve yet to print, making strong connections between the theoretical and the practical in anti-racist struggle. Taking a look at U.S. History, A.K. Williams offers his insight to the legacy of MLK, who was gunned down 42 years ago this month (p. 3), while Jarred Jones writes on the importance of distributing independent publications in times of social and political upheaval, focusing specifically on the people’s resistance in Germany during Hitler’s regime (p. 4). Next, Howard Eagle and Ben Dean-Kawamura focus closely on the racism that exists within Duffy’s plan for mayoral control itself (p. 5), as well as discussing how the framing of mayoral control in the mainstream press often reflects and perpetuates white supremacist values (p. 7). And in a response to some disturbing statistical data recently released concerning the Rochester Police Department, Tim Adams writes of some real solutions to the so-called “diversity” problem in the department (p. 9). Nazis Rally at LA City Hall Draws 500 Counter Protesters

LA, 18.04.2010 14:39

LOS ANGELES, April 17, 2010 – Neo-Nazi groups staged a demonstration today on the steps of City Hall. About 25 Nazis in full uniform and with Swastika flags marched to City Hall under the escort of hundreds of police. Police created a wide buffer zone between the Nazi rally and a large crowd of counter protesters estimated at around 500 people.

There are conflicting reports of at least two incidents where suspected Nazis were beaten by some members of the counter demonstration. There are reports of the beating of a shirtless man displaying swastika tattoos. And another incident where police intervened to extract a second man from the crowd it is unclear if the second man was indeed a part of the Nazi group. Both men escaped with minor injuries. There are also reports of some injuries sustained by counter protesters incurred from police blows during the LAPD intervention to extract the two men. [Berlin] "MediaSpree" - der Protest geht weiter!

Germany, 18.04.2010 13:09

Banged up Sea Shepherd campaigner Pete Bethune is facing a long prison sentence after boarding a Japanese whaling ship during protests in the Southern Ocean in February. Operation Waltzing Matilda was the most successful Sea Shepherd campaign yet against illegal Japanese whaling (see SchNEWS 713), but it wasn't without a cost for Sea Shepherd after their £2 million boat the Ady Gil was rammed and sunk by a whaler on January 6th.

Eclectic Los Angeles Tea Party Stages Tax Day Protest at Feinstein Office

LA, 18.04.2010 02:39

WEST LOS ANGELES, April 16, 2010 - A mixed group of "Tea Party" activists, protesters and political hopefuls staged a small but visible protest outside of California Senator Diane Feinstein's Los Angeles Offices. It was one of many held throughout the southland on the American tax deadline date in response to the Obama administrations policies concerning healthcare, immigration and the growing federal deficit.

The protest was composed of Libertarians, Evangelicals, Catholics, Republicans, a percentage of Democrats, LBGT Republicans, Jewish, Atheist, immigrant, wealthy and middle class conservatives.. This reporter spoke to at least a fourth of the crowd and found it to be surprisingly diverse and somewhat representative of the west side.

Generally the crowd was friendly with only a few openly hostile personalities. A warning went up at the beginning of the protest to be aware of left wing photographers that were simply there to take embarrassing shots of the participants. Of course that would seem to make this dreadlocked photographer who reports for IndyMedia an immediate center of attention, but happily that was not the case. The crowd was friendly and orderly. Feds kick Ashland, Oregon protesters off public property at OUR U.S. Post Office

Rogue Valley, 17.04.2010 13:40

Does this sound like the United States, or the Soviet Union?--Ivend Holen

We had a wonderful action today... This looked a lot like the corporate walk of terror we had tried to pull together last halloween... Great Job everybody!. Channel 12 mistakenly put together their story saying that our "wall street fund jobs" message and our "bank locally" message were the same for all the tea bagger gatherings in southern Oregon. We love it. Nine people fighting corporate greed stole the show!--In solidarity, Wes Brain

Hi: The one sour note of yesterday's rally was when we were "kicked off" US Post Office property. See John Darling's article in the Ashland Daily Tidings: http://3bl.me/ndwyg7

One of the superintendents came out of the Ashland Post Office to inform us that unless we stayed off US Post Office property he would call the US Postal Inspectors to arrest us. I asked him if the Post Office was not public property, and he said that it is not in Ashland, since they lease the property from the private sector.--Ivend Holen

Emitida a sentença do independentista galego Jurjo Rodrigues Olveira

Galiza, 17.04.2010 10:40

International Lolita Protest

Portland, 16.04.2010 23:39

On May 15th, Portland is joining the worldwide protest for Lolita, the orca whale to be "RETIRED" from Miami Seaquarium to a seapen provided by the Orca Network in the Puget Sound of Washington.
Please join us May 15, 2010 from 12-2 at Waterfront Park at the Saturday Market entrance.

One location of 30 cities WORLDWIDE peacefully protesting for Lolita to be retired from Miami Seaquarium!

Lolita is an Orca whale captured off the shores of Whidbey Island, WA at age 4. A capture team using speedboats, airplanes and explosives forced the entire Southern Resident orca community into a narrow cove where they corralled all 110 orcas. When they chose the young ones to ship to marine parks around the world, Lolita was delivered to the Miami Seaquarium.

Lolita has lived 37 years in a tiny tank that is barely legal by the standards of the Animal Welfare Act. For a wild animal who swims 35mph up to 100 miles a day, this is extreme cruelty.

Portlanders Raise Money for Radical Writers

Portland, 16.04.2010 23:39

On the 27th of February 2010 three dozen Portland residents gathered to celebrate the Institute for Anarchist Studies and its primary mission of providing grants to radical writers and translators.

This was one of the first events in the Northwest for the IAS, and we were pleased to offer fine food and drink to our friends in the Portland community. All contributions collected that evening went directly to supporting radical writers and our important work. Over $1000 was raised!

Building off over a decade of experience, the IAS amplifies radical voices by providing funding so that grantees can create engaging and politically important contributions. Such grantees include Portland's own Kristian Williams (www.kristianwilliams.com), who spoke at the event, and is currently working on a book on Oscar Wilde and anarchism partially funded by the IAS. The most recent issue of Perspectives on Anarchist Theory, a publication of the IAS, was also distributed to attendees.

Northwest Anarchist Conference: Anarchist Practice. April 24th - 25th

Portland, 16.04.2010 23:39

A Short Introduction:
The idea and focus behind this conference is to bring different types of anarchist practice to the for-front and begin moving away from specific theoretical engagements. Rather than taking theory and separating it from its everyday practice. This is an attempt at allocating theory the ideas brought up in discussion and talked about and beginning to practice them (IE. Praxis). There will be no specific theory leading the discussions or dialogue throughout the time except for the person. The set up is to have the ability to talk and discuss the ideas in an open manner. So after every discussion there will be a small open dialogue about the ideas.
