White Supremacist Honcho Richard Barrett Dead at 67: Rot In Hell!

DC, 23.04.2010 03:10

Y'KNOW THAT EXPRESSION, "I HOPE HE DIES IN A FIRE…"? The 4th of July will be the tenth anniversary of a march that white supremacist Dick Barrett and his Nationalist Movement held in Morristown, NJ, and the counterdemo that opposed was called the One People's Rally. If you are reading this site, you can tell that a lot has gone on since then and we evolved beyond the likes of Dick, and with the exception of a few run-ins here and there we pretty much left him to himself since he had no following and no future, even with Dr. Phil giving him air time during the Jena 6 case in 2007. Ten years later, and we have come to what just might be our most significant ROT IN HELL ever! Today, firefighters responding to smoke coming from inside Dick Barrett's home found the 67-year-old WP scumbag dead inside, and they are calling it a homicide (starting to be a little trend of folks killing Nazis in their home, eh?). People, that could be anyone. No one liked this fool. Never mind those he attacked and those who were against racism. Barrett was an outcast among the white supremacist scene. Will they ever find the person or persons responsible? Time will tell. Will we care. Ummm…no. What we will do is continue on with our work, which was started by this clown picking a fight with us. His life's work of doing so apparently has caught up with him, and you can bet the champagne is going to be popping tonight! Him inspiring One People's Project to come into existance is the only thing we will thank him for. ALSO: Barrett's Web site — still online — lauds recently-clubbed-to-death South African White Supremacist Eugene Terre Blanche as "Top Anti-Communist"

Double Jeopardy!: The Case of the Philadelphia Parking Authority, Taxi Workers and Ronald Blount

United States, 23.04.2010 02:07

Despite having already been exonerated on assault charges, Ronald Blount, President of the Unified Taxi Workers Alliance (UTWA) will stand trial for a second time this week on the same allegations. Back in October of 2009, in municipal court, a jury exonerated him in less than one hour. But that resounding decision has not deterred the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) from retrying Mr Blount for the same crime in their administrative court, Thursday April 22nd.

Solidarity Week sponsorship stirs emotions

DC, 22.04.2010 23:10

The student group UMD Students for Justice in Palestine organized a full week of events that promoted Palestinian culture and issues starting last Monday. The week quickly dissolved into a prolonged debate over free speech and to what extent the university could promote discourse without taking sides. Originally, the solidarity week was promoted as being sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy and the Nyumburu Cultural Center. But after Jewish student leaders flooded university President Dan Mote’s office with letters saying the speakers featured throughout the week were anti-Israel and offensive, the two university departments denied they were ever involved with sponsoring more than an April 12 movie screening. Santa Cruz, CA, 22.04.2010 20:08

Wednesday, April 21st was the first day of the expanded Farmers' Market in downtown Santa Cruz. However, it was strangely quiet compared to previous weeks. Notably absent from Parking Lot #4 was the weekly drum circle and the crowd it attracts. And a vendor was selling artisan bread where for years, Food Not Bombs had been distributing free meals to anyone.

West LA Community Fights to Stop Corporate Jets at Santa Monica Airport

LA, 22.04.2010 16:39

WEST LOS ANGELES, April 20, 2010 – Residents of West Los Angeles neighborhoods impacted by the increase in corporate jet traffic at the Santa Monica airport held a press conference and marched to the airport this Sunday. The 70 year old Santa Monica airport which was once a relatively quite airport for small single engine private planes has become the nation’s busiest small airport for large corporate jets in within a densely populated residential area. Long time West LA residents just East of the airport have watched the quality of their environment deteriorate to the point where toxic jet fumes are becoming life threatening for some.

Many of the home owners in the neighborhoods near the airport and under the flight path are retired and living on a fixed income so moving is not an option. Younger residents many who are recent first time home buyers with small children were not informed of the noise and toxic air generated by airport operation when they bought their homes. The problem is particularly acute for those living within a half mile East of the airport. A recent study by the UCLA Institute for the Environment shows ultra fine toxic particles in the air around the airport are 10 times higher than normal LA conditions. ARA Presents: The White Power Movement on the West Coast...

Portland, 21.04.2010 14:39

In Portland, a long-time anti-racist is targeted for assassination in the downtown area. In Vancouver, BC, an anti-fascist activist's house is bombed. In Los Angeles, the National Socialist Movement rallies and is opposed by hundreds. In the Northwest, the Aryan Nations faces resistance as it searches for a community to base its new compound.

* How are white supremacists organizing in Portland? On the West Coast generally? Should neo-Nazis just be ignored?
* How have communities responded to white supremacist activity, and what can we learn? Are there lessons from Portland's own history?
* Is neo-Nazi organizing connected to anti-immigrant movements? The Tea Party phenomenon? How?

We are hosting a panel discussion and community speak-out to address these and other questions. Our goal is to bring people together who are interested in this topic, provide broader context & resources, as well as to kick-start conversations about building responses. Please bring your ideas and enthusiasm for the efforts ahead. We look forward to seeing you there!

The expo, which had the first permitted area for the use of medical marijuana, was the largest event of its' kind to hit Northern California. Prominent members of the cannabis community discussed a wide-range of topics, however the main buzz, on and off stage, was the initiative to "legalize, control, and tax cannabis in California," which is to be decided by voters in the state during the November 2010 elections.

PDX Bring the Ruckus statement on recent events in the city

Portland, 20.04.2010 20:39

Since last fall, we've seen the facade of legitimacy surrounding policing and the liberal establishment in Portland collapse in on itself. Since the Portland Police Association's (PPA) November 24th march in defense of officer Christopher Humphrey's violent attack on a 12 year old girl, we've seen two police murders and numerous scandals involving off duty officers.
The most recent murders and police road rage cases do not exist as aberrations, but their visibility within the public eye marks the emergence of a new political moment, one in which normally submerged contradictions have been forced to the surface.

Between the impunity and hubris of the PPA and the failure of the liberal establishment in controlling the crisis, a political opening has emerged. As but one piece of the crisis of legitimacy emerging around both the police and liberal politics in this city, the actions of the Black Block and various anarchist tendencies in organizing street protests have stood as exceptional contributions to the exacerbation of this crisis.

Who Are The State Street 29

Portland, 20.04.2010 18:39

The State Street 29 is a group of individuals who were arrested on the
night of April 8th, 2010 and now facing charges from rioting to Felony
Assualt on an Officer. They were arrested at a march consisting of over
60 people that took place in downtown Olympia. The march was done in
solidarity with the West Coast Days of Action against State
Violence to draw attention to the fact that police everywhere are
perpetuating and fostering fear among our communities.

The April 8th march was similar to ones that took place in Portland,
Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area on the same day as well as
April 9th. These marches were formed to speak out against recent
unjustified violent actions taken by police officers in these cities
and surrounding areas.

The "blast" woke the residents of the house around 2 AM

Operation Chi Lift: Time for a No Kill Nation

Portland, 20.04.2010 18:39

Here at Ananda, we support No Kill policies. We know that we cannot take in every animal who is about to be put down in a shelter, but we do what we can and if everyone would do their part, together we could save them all. Last week, we were confronted with a difficult dilemma. We received word that the kill shelters in LA were over-flowing with dogs who were about to be killed. And with that news, came pictures and stories. This is something that Multnomah County officials would do well to consider - We know that the Multnomah County shelter is filled with healthy, adoptable, deserving animals, and we know that the Multnomah County kill rate is shamefully high. An animal going into that shelter has a higher chance of being killed there than of coming out alive. But we do not know which dogs are in danger and which are not. Because our space is so limited, and because we do not have unlimited resources, we cannot always be going in to the shelter here and pulling out animals. It is especially difficult for us to do that when we do not know which animals are about to die and which still have time left to find a home. Other shelters around the country, including the LA shelters, often have a published list, usually put out by rescuers who are given the information by shelter staff, of the animals who are about to be killed. That, my friends, is a very effective tactic - it's one thing to know that there are animals languishing in shelters, and another to see their faces and to know that it's up to you to save them.

And that is what happened to us last week.

Making Paper From Trees Is Just Plain Stupid

Portland, 20.04.2010 18:39

Just recently my wife broke her ankle and as a typical male I am a moron in a supper market. It takes me twice as much time to shop as it would if Namiko hobbled through the store with her broken ankle. I have however noticed a frightening specter that screamed at me from the super market shelves.

At least 90 percent of the paper products I was looking at in the store, which includes the packaging are all made from virgin wood fiber pulped from trees. When you add in virgin wood fiber in news print, office, shipping and school use, you see that nothing much has changed.

Portland Animal Defense League Targets HLS Supplier and OHSU

Portland, 20.04.2010 15:39

Portland, OR - Day three of World Week for Animals In Labs (WWAIL), organized by local grassroots animal liberation group the Animal Defense League, targeted the Staples Managing Office in Tigard and the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Beaverton.

Activists arrived at the office of the Staples Managing Office prepared for an office protest where they planned to leaflet the different cubicles inside. An hour after recon, the employees had closed up shop, doors locked, and all the lights were off. We were forced to leaflet the rest of the building and the cars outside in hopes of educating neighboring offices of Staples dirt. Staples has been a target of the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) campaign for nearly three years for their involvement as a supplier to Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS).

The Portland Animal Defense League would like to send a special 'Thank You' to all the folks who traveled from Seattle and Olympia to help out with the last two days of demos. Please consider joining activities for WWAIL, including leafleting at OHSU on Tuesday, April 20, 2pm.
