Tea Partiers clash with Counter-Protesters in Tax Day Protests Across the Nation

United States, 27.04.2010 07:07

Throughout the country, "Tea Party" activists and political hopefuls staged protests on and around the federal tax deadline date in response to the Obama administrations policies concerning taxation, healthcare, immigration and the growing federal deficit. In many cities they were met with vigorous counter-protests expressing support for universal healthcare, immigrants rights, and in some cases the Obama administration.

In Washington, DC, thousands gathered in front of the Washington Monument, and were met by a dozen or so counter-protesters. (See photo by Isis.) Philadelphia IMC reported that a rally at Independence Hall drew "several hundred people, most of them middle-aged and polite." Signs spotted include "You Work for Us" and "Seal Our Borders. No Amnesty for Lawbreakers." Los Angeles IMC reported that a protest outside Senator Diane Feinstein's office was composed of Libertarians, Evangelicals, Catholics, Republicans, a percentage of Democrats, LBGT Republicans, Jewish, Atheist, immigrant, wealthy and middle class conservatives.

Clashes between protesters and conter-protesters characterized many gatherings. In Boston, MA, progressive activists infiltrated the tea party protest, holding farcical signs that targeted speaker Sarah Palin, including "Sarah, Shut Up!!" and "Elect Sarah Palin / Paris Hilton / Bimbo party 2012." In San Francisco, CA, Tea Party protesters and counter-protesters held signs accusing each other of being infiltrators and bad spellers, respectively.

In Champaign, IL, the Mayor spoke at the rally, saying he didn't think that President Obama is an American. The statement was caught on tape by a student and made national news. Chicago IMC reported that nazis and other race-hate groups have been eying the Tea Party as a potential recruiting ground for new members.

Appeals Court Upholds Environmental Justice in Richmond

San Francisco Bay Area, 27.04.2010 06:39

In an unprecedented victory for community and environmental groups, the California State Court of Appeals has upheld the majority of findings in a lower court decision that the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the expansion of Chevron's refinery in Richmond violated state environmental law. Community members have been campaigning to fight the proposed switch to refining dirtier, heavier oil for several years, and last year, a lower court issued an injunction stopping further work on the refinery expansion.

The Scarcity of Abundance: Living Wage Campaign Started at Local, Cooperative Grocery Store

Rochester, 26.04.2010 23:37

On April 10, 2010, former workers, shareholders, customers, and concerned community members walked through the front doors of Abundance Cooperative Market, on one of their busiest days of the month, to celebrate workers and initiate a living wage campaign. Cake, balloons, party hats, noise makers, signs, a giant novelty check with Rochester's living wage rate written on it, and a living wage resolution for people to sign to be submitted to the board of directors, were used to create the celebratory atmosphere of the action.

An Academic Senate meeting at UC Santa Cruz on April 23rd turned into a heated forum to criticize Chancellor Blumenthal's hesitancy in changing the student judicial proceedings.

Chicago Tea Party Draws Rightwingers and Grassroots Counterprotest

Chicago, 25.04.2010 05:09

On April 15, some 1500 right-wing activists gathered in Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago as one of a series of "grassroots" Tea Party events to rally about the panoply of right-wing bugaboos, including health care, immigration policy, "big government", the "socialist" government of President Obama, and lower taxes.

The tea party rally was met by a counter-demonstration organized by grassroots Chicago activists, who responded in kind to the charges of the right-wingers, and raised charges of their own. Among them: xenophobia and bigotry of Tea Party members (many of whom are wealther than the general public). One example: The group South Side Anti-Racist Action identified one nazi organizer who appeared at the rally; nazis and other race-hate groups have been eyeing the Tea Party as a potential recruiting ground for new members.

Rally for Justice for the Central Park Five

DC, 23.04.2010 23:10

Twenty one years ago, April 19, 1989, five innocent Black and Latino teenage boys were captured and arrested by NYPD for the rape and beating of a white woman. She was an investment banker jogging in Central Park. Before they went to trial, newspaper headlines and television news broadcasts condemn them. They were convicted and spent from 6 to 13 years in prison. A case reminiscent of the Scottsboro Boys in Alabama 1931. Without any physical evidence, the NYPD and the District Attorney's office, namely fiction crime writer Linda Fairstein, railroaded five young boys to further their own careers. They spent a total of forty years in prison.

Animal Defense League DropsThree Anti-Vivisection Banners throughout Portland

Portland, 23.04.2010 15:38

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, April 22, 2010
Portland, OR- Early morning on April 22, activists from the Portland Animal Defense League hung banners at three locations throughout the Portland area. The Portland Animal Defense League (ADL) is a grassroots organization dedicated to exposing and abolishing animal exploitation.

The action was taken as part of World Week for Animals in Labs, an annual and international event that highlights the brutal nature of vivisection and encourages people to take action against it. The banners carried messages against OHSU and the research conducted at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). Today's banner hangs come at a time when OHSU is requesting $15 million from the National Institutes of Health for a massive expansion of their primate research facility. The facility currently contains approximately 4,200 nonhuman primates and has been cited for numerous USDA violations, the most recent series occurring in November of 2009. An inspection noted 7 violations of the Animal Welfare Act including unqualified personnel, inadequate veterinary care, and improper housing. The worst came when an unapproved drug was administered to two rhesus macaque monkeys, leaving them dead.

This latest action taken is a sign that resistance to OHSU, the ONPRC and vivisection is building.

AAUW & Louie's CELEBRATE Pay Equity Day in Ashland, Oregon

Rogue Valley, 23.04.2010 13:10

"More than 46 years after passage of the Equal Pay Act woman continue to earn only 77 cents on the dollar compared to our counterparts. On Tuesday, April 20th, we are marking this symbolic day when women's wages actually catch up to what men made at the end of 2009!"--this was written on a paper we were handed by three charming greeters at the door on Tuesday upon entering Louie's...

The welcome came from American Society of University Women (AAUW) as the all-women crew (see photos) met us at the door with an invitation for some education and fun. We entered and found a packed house and an atmosphere that felt down-home friendly.

Here are a couple pictures (click to make them bigger) & keep readin' to hear more about Equity Pay Day...
