Report back from the ALL anti-women protest

DC, 07.06.2010 20:10

Basically this was the "big" protest against choice and birth control pills event for the American Life League, a right wing anti choice group. They got about 25 people from across the country, to D.C. Planned Parenthood Clinic June 5th. It was fail. Really they came they saw and they were lame as lame could be. However the pictures and their descriptions tell the story best.

Hammer Time: The EDO Decommissioners go on trial

United Kingdom, 07.06.2010 18:39

After a full year and a half of one defendant being on remand in prison, numerous pre-trial hearings and several last minute postponements, the EDO decommissioners’ court case is finally kicked off on Monday. With the first date taking place exactly a week after the murderous attack on the Gaza freedom flotilla, the world has, yet again, been reminded of Israel’s continuous war crimes and much is at stake. A callout for solidarity with the decommissioners during the trial has been issued ( There will be an 'If I had a hammer' themed demo in support of the decommissioners outside EDO/ITT on Wednesday 9th June between 4 and 6pm - Bring rubber and inflatable hammers. The decommissioners will be arguing that their action was taken to prevent greater crimes.

The trial comes just a few days after 9 people who attempted to decommission Raytheon in Derry during Israel's 2009 assault on Gaza were acquitted by a jury (see Ireland Indymedia and here) .

A reminder of what happened: In the early hours of 17th January 2009, during Israel's 'Operation Cast Lead' offensive against Gaza, six people broke in to the EDO/ITT weapons' components factory in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, and, allegedly, caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to the production line. (see for the local paper's video of some of the damage)

The six decommissioners barricaded themselves inside, and proceeded to break computers and other equipment, with the aim of preventing the factory from being able to produce weapons. The action stopped production at the facility until Israel’s bombing campaign was over.

Nottingham responds to Gaza flotilla massacre

United Kingdom, 07.06.2010 18:39

Over 100 people gathered in Market Square on Friday June 4 to protest the killing of 9 aid workers by Israeli armed forces at the end of May. A rally was held and people marched around the square chanting. The protest's official demands included the end of Israel's blockade of Gaza, an arms embargo on Israel and government backing for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

This protest followed on from a more spontaneous demonstration the day after the killings. Demonstrators held placards aloft during a concert that was taking place in the market square.

Israel's action against the Gaza Freedom Flotilla has had particular resonance in Nottingham because a Nottingham Trent University student, Tauqir 'Tox' Sharif, was onboard the stormed flotilla ship. After some days in an Israeli prison he is due to be back in Nottingham this week.

Another World is Possible, Another US is Necessary: Social Forum Process Hits the Twin Cities

United States, 07.06.2010 12:07

"The Social Forum is a movement-building process - not a conference," says one local announcement about the 2010 United States Social Forum (USSF) June 22-26 in Detroit.  Dozens, if not hundreds, of Twin Cities activists plan to attend the Forum for which nearly 20,000 have registered and thousands more are expected to show up.  But first, this Saturday June 5, the Waite House hosts the Twin Cities People's Movement Assembly (PMA), "a gathering of people to come up with demands, commitments, and visions on how to struggle together for positive social change" and one of the first steps in the social forum process.

The PMA at Waite House from 2-5pm is organized by local activists who attended the 2007 USSF in Atlanta and will include arts and cultural performances, food and childcare. The video at left begins to explain the PMA model.  In particular, the Poor People's Economic Human Rights campaign and local unions have been instrumental in guiding the push to the USSF in Detroit, and want to ensure that people from marginalized groups are in the majority at the Waite House PMA on Saturday.

The Indypendent Issue 152: Gaza On My Mind: A Middle-Aged Mom's Unlikely Journey From Apathy to Action

NYC, 07.06.2010 02:39

After the 2008-09 Israeli attack on Gaza, and now after the killing of 9 activists aboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, many people around the world are increasingly speaking out against Israeli actions.

Alex Kane reports on one family’s political transformation that is emblematic of this shift: “Last New Year’s Eve, Debbie Mardon did not celebrate with noise makers or confetti — instead, she headed to Cairo’s main square to participate in the Gaza Freedom March with her daughter Jenna Bitar, 18, and son Joel, 23.

Amid police violence aimed at protesters and Egyptian security forces blockading them inside their hotel, Debbie, 55, a native New Yorker, said that protesting in Cairo “was the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life.

It was an unlikely place to be for a previously apolitical mother who voted for George W. Bush and as recently as three years ago relied on rightwing radio hosts Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh to help her make sense of the world.

Sheffield Anarchist Bookfair

United Kingdom, 06.06.2010 21:09

May 2010 saw an anarchist bookfair in Sheffield, the first in living memory for most of those attending, and a real success. It seems that interest in anarchism is having new growth, with social centres, bookfairs and co-operatives springing up around UK and the world. The basic principles like self-organising, equality, non-hierarchy, mutual aid and co-operation make a lot of sense to new generations who don't believe negative media demonization and want to find out for themselves how it works.

Fenty Strikes Again!

DC, 06.06.2010 19:10

Fenty Strikes Again. McMillan Park consists of 25 acres of beautiful land near downtown DC. Mayor Fenty wants to turn McMillan over to a development team, led by his friends at EYA. EYA plans to build two million square feet of development on the historic site. The community is overwhelmingly opposed to EYA's plan and leading the push back is Tony Norman and the McMillan Park Committee. The mayor has refused to disclose the amount of public dollars promised to EYA and the McMillan Park Committee has filed a FOIA lawsuit. Also of note: DC's Zoning Commission plays a significant role in determining which development projects move forward and which do not. Many civic activists, including Tony Norman, are alarmed at Mayor Fenty's decision last week to nominate two developers to this all-important commission. Audio

Chicago Continues Actions After Gaza Flotilla Raids, With More Actions Planned

Chicago, 06.06.2010 02:09

On June 1, 2010, thousands gathered at the Israeli embassy to protest Israel's attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla — and vowed to step up resistance to Israel's brutal apartheid regime and its U.S. backers. See photos | Video for Chicago Indymedia | Video for Labor Beat

On June 5, Chicagoans staged an emergency vigil this evening outside the Israeli consulate to demand safe and free passage of the MV Rachel Corrie in its effort to break the Israeli blockade. The ship was boarded by Israeli troops and rerouted to the Port of Ashdod. See photos

More Chicago actions related to the Middle East are in the works. Chicagoans Against Apartheid in Palestine are organizing a Midwest Regional Action, to focus in particular on the use of Illinois-made Caterpillar brand bulldozers for destroying civilian homes in the occupied territories.

Matt Rossell Speaks on National Television Today for the Sea Lion Defense Brigade

Portland, 05.06.2010 23:09

While local "journalists" have consistently failed to ask any questions about the government's program of scapegoating and killing sea lions on the Columbia, the story was sucked right out from under them today by the national news. This is a story that has been meticulously covered here on Portland Indymedia for years now but, until today, the best the local corporate media could do was to either ignore the story completely or just repeat ODFW press releases verbatim, and curl up in the lap of the NW fishing industry.
It has been very frustrating to watch the truth swept aside in the corporate media all these years. So I am very happy to see this story today:

Atypical Tea Partier A Typical Tea Partier

Rochester, 05.06.2010 15:37

I was recently talking to a neighbor of mine about the role of race in politics, and about, more generally, the status of race relations in the United States. He told me a short anecdote about his job at a city school. He said he met the school’s newest principal who asked him (he cooks there) whether he “Only cooked Black, or [if he could] cook American, too.” Stories like these aren’t difficult to find. In the mind of many white Americans, such a question seems legitimate and inquisitive, rather than horribly offensive, and implicitly derogatory towards Black Americans. While debates in the public sphere about who constitutes valuable citizens plays themselves out like a, political awareness and activism are on. Debates in the public sphere have given rise to the worse sort of reactionary politics. The most recently awakened activists have tended to expend their energies quibbling over what constitutes viable citizenship, rather than focusing on issues that are actually affecting our communities. The Tea Party is not least among the notable movements to spring up in the wake of the election of Barrack Obama to a post held only by wealthy, white males for the previous 220 years of this country’s existence. Tea Party members are mostly white, mostly wealthy, and overwhelmingly conservative.

Red and Black Cafe asks cop to leave, mainstream media and boot-lickers throw a fit

Portland, 05.06.2010 01:09

For reasons unknown, former marine, Iraq-war veteran, current police officer, James Crooker went to the Red and Black worker-owned cafe in south east Portland and ordered coffee. He was given his coffee in a to-go cup and asked to leave due to the fact that cops make many people uncomfortable. This entirely reasonable act done out of concern for the well-being of other patrons has wrinkled the noses of Portland's cop-supporter community.

The corporate media has jumped all over this not-very-exciting incident and loonies have been making anonymous threatening comments on blogs and what-not. Now is the time for all of us who have been supported by the Red and Black to show our support and solidarity as our friends and comrades come under attack.

The Rift between Teachers and Democrats Widen

Boston, 04.06.2010 15:09

The corporate media is brutally honest on rare occasions. Take for example a recent article in The New York Times Magazine, titled The Teachers’ Union’s Last Stand (05-23-10). The title itself is surprisingly sincere, since it admits that the nation’s teachers are being targeted for attack by the Obama Administration, through his “Race to the Top” education reform. And although the article has an inherently corporate bias, it contains many revelations that have been otherwise ignored in the mainstream media.

Peace On The Streets Hosts A Santa Cruz Community Forum

Santa Cruz, CA, 04.06.2010 08:16

Melissa Schott writes, "Peace On The Streets, being a group for only five weeks, was able to organize a community forum that not only discussed the violence on the streets but was able to address the problems our community has been faced with and came up with many solutions. I have never seen such a great crowd where each person cared so much about their surroundings. In little words I would like to admit that I, Melissa Schott, am proud to be one of many in such a progressive group."

Why not have an organization dedicated to making our community safer, largely through encouraging people to spend more time 'positively loitering' in public spaces? Before long, however, it became clear that TBSC had a fairly narrow vision of what safety means, and from whom Santa Cruz should be taken back."

Video: Memorial Day 2010

Portland, 03.06.2010 21:09

Video from the Memorial Day 2010 event sponsored and hosted by Veterans for Peace, Chapter 72.

Memorial Day 2010
The commemoration was held at the Koran Wall in the Memorial Coliseum complex, where two members of the Veterans for Peace,Chapter 72 gave brief comments before Taps was played to honor those who have fallen. A third commentary from another member now living in Seattle was also read.

The first speaker, Grant Remington finished his brief comments: "So while we reflect on the names on this wall, let us learn to love and remember that there is only one ambition that is good, that is to live now that none may weary of life and none may have to do the task we leave undone- and that task is to make peace."

Another member of Veterans for Peace, Chapter 72, Harvey Thorstad reminds the crowd of the tragedies of war, but not just the fallen and physically maimed soldiers, or even their families, but those tens of thousands who have returned emotionally scarred by what they have witnessed and in which they have participated. Thorstad recounts examples of what happens in war, soldiers killing innocent civilians and having to live with this the remainder of their lives.

War is hell for many reasons, most of which have no relevance to one's life until those heavy circumstances arrive, often squeezing heart, mind and soul out into streams of homelessness, drug addiction, and the inability to cope with civilian life.

The GLBTQQ Community Discusses Bashings in Forum

Portland, 03.06.2010 20:39

In a response to the gay bashings in the Portland area this weekend, a community forum was held tonight at the Q Center (4115 N Mississippi) by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and Questioning (GLBTQQ) community to ask questions, get answers and come up with solutions.

On 5/30/10, three members of the Portland GLBTQQ community were attacked. Two of the three men attacked came to the Q Center to give their account of what happened over the weekend. Around 2am, a group left Red Cap and were walking past Living Rooms Theater including 3 drag queens and 3 queer men. They were attacked by an undetermined group of men. The men yelled, "Faggots" and advanced upon the group. One queen got hit three to four times in the face. The queer group fought back but were continually attacked, not only physically but with remarks like, "I hope you die of AIDS." One man, Birch, was completely knocked out.

Pentagon Changed Military Commissions Rules To Legitimize Drone Program

DC, 03.06.2010 19:10

June 2, 2010 In a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed today, the American Civil Liberties Union asked the government to disclose the legal basis for its use of predator drones to conduct "targeted killings" overseas. In particular, the ACLU seeks to find out when, where and against whom drone strikes can be authorized, and how the United States ensures compliance with international laws relating to extrajudicial killings. "Changing the rules in order to accommodate CIA drone strikes underscores the flaws in the entire 'global war on terror' paradigm. The entire world is not a battlefield. The government cannot use quintessentially warlike measures – deploying missiles and other offensive force – anywhere in the world that it believes a suspected terrorist might be located." - Jonathan Manes, Legal Fellow in the ACLU National Security Projec
