Bike Party to Shut Down BP Station in San Francisco

San Francisco Bay Area, 12.06.2010 08:09

Since the April 20th BP oil spill began in the Gulf of Mexico, a number of related protests have been held across the country and locally. On June 11th, a group of bikers blocked entrances at a BP owned ARCO gas station at Fell and Divisadero in San Francisco. The demonstrators were protesting the environmental outrage in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as a dangerous bike lane that is perennially blocked by cars lining up to enter the station.

Following in the footsteps of wolves and cougars, and the scientists working to understand their place in the rapidly changing world of nature, award-winning filmmakers Karen and Ralf Meyer of Green Fire Productions have captured the predators' ongoing drama in their new documentary, Lords of Nature: Life in a Land of Great Predators.

[A]ccompanied by an Art Show by Justseeds Artists' Cooperative, highlighting art about predators and our relationships with them. It will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion with scientists, wildlife managers, and conservationists.

Labor Movement declares “Not Our Cup of Tea”

United States, 11.06.2010 00:07

On Thursday, June 3rd the Western New York Area Labor Federation and the Working Families Party came together to discuss and critique the Tea Party. A room of nearly 100 labor leaders and active union members heard from a number of speakers dealing with the history of what makes up the Tea Party and what the labor movement should be doing to provide an alternative to the Tea Party brand of populism.

Presenters included Alex Blair, history professor at Buffalo State College, Richard Lipsitz, of the Western Area Labor Federation, Frank Messiah, president of the Buffalo NAACP, Donna Chapman, Secretary of the Working Family Party, and Tom Michael of the Colgate University of Department of Economics.

The presentation began with an overview of the economic policies promoted by the Tea Party and the connections of the Tea Party to conservative activists like Dick Army and his Freedom Works foundation. Prof. Michael gave a brief description of neoliberal capitalism, or as he later called it, “the Market as the master”. It’s this ideology of total freedom for businesses to do as they like with zero government regulation or protection of the common good that is inherent to the arguments of the Tea Party. Michael argued that fixing the crisis is a much larger task than some simple reform legislation. He argued that the political-ideological framework needs to be changed. This includes a commitment to full employment, strong regulation of financial institutions, and bringing wages back in line with productivity. “We need to make banking boring again,” he argued.

Red Cross Workers Go On Nationwide Strike

United States, 10.06.2010 09:07

After 15 months of working without a contract, Red Cross workers throughout the nation called for a 3-day strike in an effort to stop unfair negotiating tactics by the national Red Cross. One hundred Western New York members were among those on strike in six different states.

On June 4th, the members of Communication Workers of America local 1122 held a rally for supporters and workers to spread their message to the Red Cross and local media. They made it clear that they don’t want to risk the area blood supply, and for that reason they did not go on an indefinite strike. They do however need to send a message to their employers.

“These are tough economic times. You bet they are, for the working men and women of this community. When you make $2 billion in revenue it’s not tough for the Red Cross,” said CWA Local 1122 President James Wagner.

Dispossessed in DC

DC, 09.06.2010 22:10

Situated east of the Anacostia river and perched atop some of the city's most beautiful land is public housing. Like the rest of the city's public housing - or what's left of it - Highland Dwellings is in grave danger. Last night, DC's Housing Authority hosted a meeting on the massive renovations coming to Highland Dwellings. Residents applauded the Housing Authority's promised upgrades. There was one person, however, who wasn't clapping: Kay Armstead is the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for the area. Commissioner Armstead is concerned that while the improvements to Highland Dwellings will be made, it will not be the residents who enjoy them. Fowl Play: Perdue Attacks Univeristy of Maryland's environmental law clinic

DC, 09.06.2010 22:10

The Chesapeake Bay is dying. Rather, it's being killed. Killed in no small part due to Perdue, the nation's third largest poultry producer. Along Maryland's eastern shore, waste from Perdue's operations leaches into the Bay. The University of Maryland's environmental law clinic, concerned about possible violations of the Clean Water Act, sued Perdue. In response, the agri-giant went on the attack and called on its friends in the Maryland state legislature to defund the law clinic. State Senator Jim Brochin described Perdue's actions as "something straight out of Communist China." The Baltimore Sun commented: "What's particularly galling is that the assault on the law school's academic freedom and the independence of its fledgling lawyers is all because some students had the temerity to help some Eastern Shore residents and environmental groups go after polluters." Maryland State Senator Jamie Raskin led the fight back against Perdue's attacks. Audio

Nottingham hosts "first ever Vegan Beer Festival"

United Kingdom, 09.06.2010 19:39

On June 5-6, the Sumac Centre hosted the "first ever Vegan Beer Festival". Vegans and vegetarians are wary of real ales as they often use isinglass, derived from the swim bladders of fish, to make it less cloudy. This inspired a number of local vegans to organise the real ale festival as a way of demonstrating that there is an alternative.

The Saturday was a gloriously warm day and the event was well attended, with the alcohol flowing within minutes of the official opening at 12 noon. There were a range of beers available to try, along with several ciders and perrys. Interest was so great that the beer ran out on Saturday.

Boston, 09.06.2010 12:09

Mirroring France’s Tarnac 9, nine people have been charged in Reykjavík for ‘attacking parliament’ in December 2008, when they entered public benches, unarmed and without any violent intent or effort, to shout at congressmen: ‘Get the fxxx out! This building does not serve its purpose any more!’ Which was, in all respects, true. 40 days later public protest outed the government.

Sparmaßnahmen und Protest

Germany, 09.06.2010 11:09

Israel kills 10+ on Free Gaza Flotilla taking aid to Gaza

United Kingdom, 08.06.2010 21:39

At 4.30am local time, armed Israeli troops boarded one of the boats in the Free Gaza Flotilla which was carrying construction supplies, medical equipment and schoolbooks to Gaza, in an attempt to break the siege which Israel imposed on Gaza over 1080 days ago.

35 UK citizens were aboard the boats, which carried activists from over 50 countries. The boats were reportedly 80 miles off the coast of Gaza, and many on the boats were said to be asleep when Israeli troops opened fire with machine guns. Many wounded have reportedly been taken to Israeli hospitals. Israel is on a media offensive claiming that its troops were attacked first. Even if it were true, they would need to explain why they were boarding a ship flying a Turkish flag in International waters.

A demo was held outside Downing Street yesterday afternoon and Stop the War had already called a demo for this afternoon at 2pm outside Downing Street.

ISM London stated that they were "horrified" by the incident but also stated that "We’re not surprised that the attacks took place in International waters, or that they were a reckless, murderous over-reaction to unarmed ships carrying medical supplies and building materials. Israel routinely meets non violent Palestinian protest with lethal violence."

On the 31st May protests were held across the country with reports coming in from London, Cambridge, Bristol, Birmingham, Sheffield, Manchester, and Galway. In London the protest moved on from Downing Street to the Israeli Embassy, whilst in Bristol a protest was held in solidarity with Palestinians and the two Bristolians aboard the attacked convoy. In Galway a protest was held inside Marks & Spencer in protest of their support of the occupation, and in Manchester protesters attempted to storm the BBC building in protest of biased reporting.

A Week of Action Against the Deportation Machine

United Kingdom, 08.06.2010 21:39

The first week of June saw a European Week of Action Against the Deportation Machine. Various events, protests and actions took place throughout the UK and other European countries with a common message: "Stop deportations! No to Fortress Europe! Freedom of movement for all!"

By trying to widen the scope and diversity of actions and groups involved, the Week tried to draw attention to the fact that anti-deportation is not a 'single issue campaign'. "People choose or are forced to migrate for a variety or reasons, from wars and armed conflicts fuelled by the arms trade and western interests, through poverty, exploitation, discrimination, gender oppression, domestic and state violence, to climate change."
