Chicagoan gives chilling eyewitness account of Israeli assault on Gaza aid flotilla

Chicago, 17.06.2010 23:09

Chicago Indymedia has just released video testimony from Chicagoan Fatima Mohammadi, a passenger aboard the Mavi Marmara, who gives a chilling eyewitness account of the May 31 Israeli assault on the Gaza aid flotilla, which left 9 dead, scores injured and six unaccounted for and feared dead.

The Youtube video of Fatima's testimony includes recently released video smuggled off the Mavi Marmara — the only video documentation currently available from activists on board the flotilla. Dozens of hours of additional video and thousands of still photos remain in Israeli hands — and the Israeli government has refused to release this material to the world.

Israel imprisoned those passengers that it did not kill or disappear for days after the murderous assault, in an attempt to spin it's violence and illegality to the advantage of the apartheid state. But eyewitness accounts — and video smuggled from the besieged ship by Cultures of Resistance — increasingly put the lie to Israeli distortions.

A Massive Maturing of Mortgages

DC, 17.06.2010 20:10

Several decades ago, the federal government implemented a program in which landlords' mortgage payments were subsidized in return for providing affordable housing for the life of the mortgage. Many of these mortgages will mature in 2014, says Linda Leaks, a housing organizer with Empower DC. Sitting below the steps of the U.S. Capitol, Leaks explained that if Congress does nothing, thousands of units of affordable housing may be lost in D.C. alone. Q&A with Tre Arrow on His One-Year Anniversary

Portland, 17.06.2010 17:39

June 8, 2010, mark[ed] the one-year anniversary of Tre Arrow's return to Portland. A year ago (June 8, 2009) Tre Arrow greeted a small group of well-wishers at PDX's Arrival terminal, climbed onto a tandem bicycle and merged into a sunny Portland afternoon. He wasn't home free, but--after two years as a fugitive and five and a half years of incarceration--he was home. If you had been at Arrivals that day, you may not have recognized the biblically long-haired man with the slightly stern blue eyes. After all, it's been eight years...You may not have recognized Tre, until you looked down. Tre was characteristically bare foot. It's this podiatrical peculiarity that is Tre's most attributable feature. Related: Recent Video of Tre Arrow

Hunger strike against Leicester animal lab

United Kingdom, 16.06.2010 16:09

Protests continue against the construction of an animal lab at the University of Leicester. Activists have targetted various companies involved in the construction, including Willmott Dixon. On Monday June 7, activists held a protest outside the WD's headquarters in Coleshill, Birmingham. One campaigner chained himself to a bench and began a 3 day hunger strike.

The campaign was established following the university's announcement that it was going to be building a new animal lab on Lancaster Place. Whilst the university claims that "vital" research will be carried out at the facility, campaigners content that the new lab "is squandering money away from potentially life-saving research which is accurate and does not involve abusing animals."

COMMUNE is a film about Olympia, Washington, and was a gift to the denizens of that small city. It's a street-level exploration of the Olympia social commons?a shifting space that erupts on street corners and bubbles up from an underground well of potential. Through casual interviews with strangers, the film dives into the depths of desire and unveils new uses of the spaces Olympians all share. It was meant to be a looking glass, a lens, and a thief's gaze directed at Olympia's own terrible community.

A terrible community constitutes itself in opposition to an opponent and, in that opposition, closes in on itself and begins to rot. Olympia, once home to ELF cells, the diffuse network of Port Militarization Resistance, and a broad community of anarchists, has become little more than a stale, dusty closet, a cafe-to-show circuit, a green-washed, gentrifying haven of the left. In short, a terrible community. COMMUNE exposes that Olympia runs business as usual despite its high activist-per-capita ratio and radical reputation. But the film also reveals the existence of different communes, spreading on their own, outside of anarchist or radical circles.

Villagers keep up pressure against Minorca mine

United Kingdom, 12.06.2010 22:39

A local campaign group is fighting UK Coal's plans for an opencast mine near Measham in North West Leicestershire. The Minorca Opencast Protest Group (MOPG) oppose the company's plans for a mile long mine and the extraction of 1.25m tonnes of coal over 4 1/2 years.

UK Coal are already failing to meet requirements to restore a site in nearby Ashby de la Zouch to agricultural land and MOPG fear that this will happen again.

It is thought that coal mined at Minorca would be used to fuel Ratcliffe on Soar power station in Nottinghamshire. The mined coal would fuel the power station for only 65 days.

In a hotly contested battle for leadership of one of the metro area's largest unions, an openly progressive slate of Chicago teachers has beaten the old guard in a landslide. Mehserle Trial for Murder of Oscar Grant Underway in L.A.

San Francisco Bay Area, 12.06.2010 10:09

On June 1st, family, friends, and community activists gathered in front of Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malleys office in Oakland to demand a vigorous prosecution of Johannes Mehserle for the murder of Oscar Grant. The next day jury questionnaires were handed out in Los Angeles Superior Court, and after numerous motions have been heard in pre-trial hearings and a jury which includes no African Americans was selected, the long-awaited trial began with opening statements on June 10th. The LA Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant has made a call — "All Out to the Courthouse" — for June 14th. In Oakland, a mass community gathering has been called for 14th Street and Broadway at 6pm the day of the Mehserle verdict.
