Disability Rights Activists to Re-Establish 'Arnieville' In Berkeley

San Francisco Bay Area, 26.06.2010 23:38

On June 22nd, disability right activists established a tent city they have named "Arnieville" on Adeline at Stewart Street in Berkeley. Arnieville is an ongoing tent city protesting the Governor's proposed cuts to In-Home Support Services (IHSS), which enables people to remain in their homes rather than be institutionalized. A similar protest was held at the same place in late May.

CIMC reporters denied Canadian entry as government steps up massive repression at Toronto G20 protests

Chicago, 26.06.2010 07:09

World leaders have gathered for the G8 and G20 meetings in Toronto amidst a massive security crackdown that will mark the most expensive three days in Canadian history. Large swaths of Toronto’s downtown core have the appearance of a police state, with an estimated deployment of over 19,000 security personnel—nearly five times the number at the G20 in Pittsburgh last year. The security price tag is around $1 billion, and some predict the total summit cost will surpass $2 billion. More from Democracy Now!

Independent journalists and activists [1 | 2 ] seeking to cross the border have been routinely denied entry, including two Chicago Indymedia journalists who were given the option to either turn back or spend 'weeks' in a Canadian prison.

On June 2nd, 2010, the Ontario provincial government cabinet met secretly to pass a regulation which allows the police to arrest anyone who refuses to identify themselves or agree to a police search within five metres of the G20 security zone in Toronto.

Metro's Unfair Fare Hike

DC, 26.06.2010 01:10

On Sunday, Metro fare hikes will go into effect. Mike Golash, a recently retired Metro employee, described these fare hikes as "outrageous." He asks why the federal government and businesses which benefit the most from Metro are not asked to pay their fair share. The Verizon Center, for example, sits directly atop the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro, greatly enhancing its value. Yet it is the riders who must bare the budren of higher fares. As Mike Golash points out, "The system benefits big business much more than it benefits the average worker." Audio

Call to Action Against the International Monetary Fund

Boston, 26.06.2010 00:09

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have a well-deserved reputation for being the loan sharks of global capitalism. Both institutions are infamous for forcing poor countries in the global south to ruin their own economies in order to further enrich Western corporations. Nations who decline to borrow money at exorbitant interest rates and then beggar their populations to pay it back (or worse, default on their existing debt), are subjected to trade sanctions that have been described as “the economic equivalent of nuclear war.”

Help Map the Gulf from Portland

Portland, 25.06.2010 23:39

The Government is not creating high-res maps of the Deepwater horizon spill that truly show the ecological damage. Grassroots Mapping is. Help build aerial photography rigs to send to the Gulf! no expertise required.

Grassroots Mapping is a group empowering communities to map their own space. They're in the Gulf right now using simple and cheap balloon and kite aerial photography rigs to photograph the oil spill. It's a truly grassroots effort, and the number of mapping teams continues to grow as teams train new teams. This Saturday at Gallery Homeland (Map here) in inner SE we'll be building balloons, testing out homemade designs to reduce the cost of getting airborne, and assembling rigs to send to the Gulf. Come join us- no expertise required, all supplies provided. If you can, bring food!

In turn, demonstrators decided to have a picket that was "too gay" for Hornblower. Picketers dressed in sailor suits paraded down a red carpet runway dancing to the music of the Brass Liberation Orchestra.

Nottingham responds to budget

United Kingdom, 25.06.2010 10:09

On Tuesday June 22nd, ConDem Chancellor George Osborne revealed the contents of the "emergency budget." As expected, this included a pay freeze for public sector workers (except the lowest paid) along with cuts in housing benefit and an increase in VAT. The SWP-initiated Right to Work campaign called for protests across the country against the budget. These were supported by Unison and, locally, by the Nottinghamshire and Mansfield Trades Council. Trade unionists and others demonstrated outside the Council House from 5.30pm. There were also protests by the PCS (the civil service union) at lunchtime. Another World Is Possible; Is Another U.S. Necessary? Dispatch from the US Social Forum

United States, 25.06.2010 00:07

Fireworks may have been a more appropriate grand opening for a Tea Party convention than the 2010 United States Social Forum

But just the same, the Detroit skyline exploded in patriotic colors after I arrived at the Spirit of Hope Church of Trumbull Street Monday night, where local residents and out-of-towners watched the joint Windsor--Detroit "Red, White and Boom" Independence Day celebration from the church's historic be-gargoyled bell tower.

"Another World is Possible / Another U.S. is Necessary / Another Detroit is Happening," goes the tagline for the Social Forum, the second United States installment of this global and local process.

It's expected to draw 20,000 or more social justice campaigners of all stripes this week, including hundreds from around Minnesota.

A Campaign To Divest From Mideast Apartheid

United States, 23.06.2010 12:37

Last week, the group Jewish Voice For Peace kicked off a campaign to divest from Israel's Occupation of the Palestinian territories. Their goal is to convince TIAA-CREF to stop investing in companies that profit from the Occupation, such as Motorola and Caterpillar. Like the South African anti-apartheid divestment campaign on the 1980s, supporters of this recent movement believe that public pressure is an effective way to stop the human rights abuses and bring peace to the Mideast.

Immigrants Rights Activists Stage Civil Disobedience Action, 12 Arrested

LA, 21.06.2010 17:09

COSTA MESA, Monday June 14, 2010 – Recently, the Costa Mesa city council passed an ordinance declaring the city a "Rule of Law" city, a label they use to indicate their status as a city that is hostile to undocumented immigrants, unlike the "Sanctuary Cities" where the paperless can find refuge.

The Costa Mesa community has been battling its city council and its anti-immigrant mayor, Alan Mansoor, for years. Last week, Monday, immigrant rights activists engaged in civil disobedience to shut down a busy intersection for several hours in Costa Mesa. Activists set up a table in the middle of the intersection and chained themselves together around the table. A total of 12 immigrant rights activists were arrested as a result of this action. Belated Court Update on the RNC 8 from the June Hearing

United States, 21.06.2010 11:07

Wednesday, June 9th was the fifth and last day of the RNC 8 motion hearings.

Judge Warner rejected the defense’s motion to call FBI informant Andrew Darst, and with that the oral arguments of the probable cause hearing ended. Both sides will submit further written arguments and the judge will take the issues under advisement after July 14th, determining whether there is probable cause to charge the defendants at all. If she determines that there is not enough evidence to determine probable cause, the charges will be thrown out.

June 19th Anarchists March against police violence

Portland, 21.06.2010 04:39

About 75-100 anarchists and supporters marched from the waterfront through downtown Portland. There was a moment of comic relief before the march started when an anarchist noticed a bike cop wearing "evil" socks. The intensity and the pace of the protest were not for those who value politeness and passive resistance over defiance and confrontation. The chanting went on almost non-stop; there were shouts of "Another man deceased, Who's to blame? The police," "No Justice, No Peace, Fuck the Police," "No KKK, No Fascist USA, No cops!" and "Our passion for freedom, Is stronger than your prisons." Many protestors handed out flyers and booklets "Get to know your police officers." Several also talked with curious passers-by about the issues.

We marched at a fast clip for over 2 hours, stopping briefly at NW 13th and Everett where James Chasse was killed by the cops. The anarchists attempted to march over the Morrison Bridge, but the cops quickly appeared to set up a blockade. Throughout the march, there were over 100 cops on bikes, horses and cars. It seems 3 people were arrested, for no apparent reason. After the second arrest, the riot police appeared to the jeers of the crowd. Finally, the protestors marched to the Justice Center to show solidarity with their comrades who were arrested. The march ended after 6 PM.

The Numbers Are In, Mayoral Control Is Out: Community Members Testify Against Mayoral Control

Rochester, 20.06.2010 23:37

With all the hoopla in the media regarding yesterday's spectacle of a "public hearing", it's important for those who were not able to attend (after all, most people work on Friday mornings and/or afternoons or have other daytime obligations) to understand clearly what actually went down, what was said, and perhaps most importantly, who said it.

Based on close listening and note-taking throughout the first six hours of the seven-hour forum, here are some interesting numbers I recorded on the subject of "who said what."

Of the 43 people I witnessed speak, only twelve spoke in favor of the legislation. But what's most interesting is the fact that of those twelve who spoke in favor of the legislation, six were elected officials/politicians, and three were affluent CEOs. Only three community members and/or parents or RCSD students, with no financial and/or political ties to mayoral control spoke in favor of the legislation.

On the other hand, 31 spoke against the legislation. Of those 31, eight were elected officials/politicians. Twenty-three community members and parents spoke against the mayoral control legislation.

Testimonies: Coming soon!

Stoppt Atomkraft! Ostsee-Infotour

Germany, 19.06.2010 17:09

Slavery In the US

DC, 19.06.2010 00:10

Slavery in the U.S. ended more than a hundred years ago. Or did it? This Tuesday and Wednesday, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers set up their Modern Day Slavery Museum on the National Mall. Kate Hadley is with the Student/Farmworker Alliance which is a national network of youth and students organizing around the campaign for fair food. Standing inside a replica box truck used to enslave workers in Florida, Kate Hadley explained the importance of the campaign for higher wages, which calls for an increase of a "Penny Per Pound" of tomotoes picked. This pay increase would nearly double pickers' salaries. It would also help to prevent the formation of conditions of powerlessness which must be present in order to enslave people.
