Santa Cruz, CA, 14.07.2010 03:09

In the July 16th hearing for his alleged participation in the DIY New Year's parade on December 31st, 2009, defense will attempt to demonstrate a pattern of discriminatory prosecution based on Modes political affiliation.

Interruption as Intervention: Why I Fucked with Chuck (Schumer)

NYC, 13.07.2010 21:39

Yesterday, as I found myself deep in a sea of Williamsburg hipsters awaiting a "Pool Party" concert at East River State Park, a rather unexpected "special guest" was announced by an entirely too enthusiastic emcee for the artfully apathetic aesthetes who dared not display any sentiment beyond irony. I assumed maybe we'd be graced by some luminary of the scene (spending the last five years in Binghamton, NY prevents me from naming whom that might be).

Action Alert: Forest Advocates Hang Art Installation in Mt. Hood to Raise Awareness About Liquefied Natural Gas

For Immediate Release
July 12th, 2010

Palomar Gas Transmission, a company that proposed an $800 million natural gas pipeline across the Oregon Cascades told the FERC that their project is in indefinite delay, and needs to secure "additional commercial underpinning" before it can progress. Palomar claimed it "was reviewing its project plan" in light of the bankruptcy of its biggest prospective customer -- a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal on the Columbia River that suspended its own permitting efforts in May of this year.

AETA 4 Case Dismissed, But Re-Indictment Possible

Santa Cruz, CA, 12.07.2010 23:09

The U.S. District Court in San Jose has thrown out the indictment of four animal rights activists who were charged with violating the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, because the government did not clearly explain what, exactly, the protesters did. The case is not over, however. The government can still re-indict the defendants with an amended bill of particulars that clearly outlines their alleged actions.

"Immoral" Ambulance Fees

DC, 10.07.2010 01:10

Due to a severe budget shortfall, Montgomery County is scheduled to implement an ambulance fee of $300-800 per ride. After 10 years as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician, Darian Unger announced that if the fees go into effect, he will have to resign as an EMT. Sitting in the Silver Spring fire station on Georgia Avenue, Unger said of the fees, "I think they're immoral. I don't think I can ethically enable that sort of charging of patients who call 911." In his testimony before the Montgomery County Council prior to the vote on the ambulance fees, Unger said, "A primary reason to oppose the creation of an ambulance fee is to honor the fundamental obligation of local government to provide basic, equal rescue services to all. Public schools do not charge fees to parents for educating their children. The police department does not charge fees to burglary victims (or their homeowners insurance) for responding to or investigating the crime. Fire and EMS services are no different: it is the responsibility of the county government to provide them using revenue from taxes, rather than from fees or insurance payments. Anything less is abdication of basic responsibility." Despite overwhelming public opposition, the Montgomery County Council voted 5-4 in favor of the ambulance fee. Unger and hundreds of others have embarked on an effort to get the issue before the voters of Montgomery County in the form of a referendum in November. In order to do this, they'll need to get more than 20,000 signatures on their petition, and they're well on their way. To learn more about this effort see www.StopAmbulanceFee.org.

Marie Mason put in solitary confinement

Portland, 10.07.2010 00:39

On Thursday, July 1 Green Scare prisoner Marie Mason was placed in solitary confinement. All supporters are encouraged to write her and keep her spirits up. Her cell is very small and windowless, and since then she has only been allowed to stand outside (in a small cage) for under an hour - in total. She cannot send email and can only make one phone call a week. She has also lost access to the vegan food she was buying from the commissary, and so she has an extremely limited diet. She has been told that she has been "re-classified", although exactly what this means is unclear. They may be preparing to transfer her. Mason can still send and receive letters. (However, she asks that supporters do not send pictures at this time.). All supporters are encouraged to write her and keep her spirits up.

Marie Mason is serving almost 22 years for two acts of environmentally-motivated property destruction in which no one was harmed. This is the longest current sentence of any of the Green Scare prisoners. (The Green Scare is the name given to the recent prosecution of eco-saboteurs and animal liberation activists, in which the government has labeled them as "terrorists" and sought huge sentences.) Mason was turned in by her then-husband, Frank Ambrose, who had secretly spied on activists for years and then filed for divorce the day she was arrested. Mason eventually plead guilty to 14 actions; 13 were claimed by the Earth Liberation Front and one by the Animal Liberation Front. At her sentencing, the judge said she had "violated the marketplace of ideas" and gave her an even longer sentence than the prosecution had asked for (15-20 years).

Move Your $MONEY$ Southern Oregon

Rogue Valley, 09.07.2010 23:40

Ashland, Oregon * Independence Day, 2010

Southern Oregon's MOVE YOUR MONEY campaign debuted on the main drag during Ashland's Fourth of July parade. The parade entry from Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice (SOJwJ) included the Jefferson State Rollers. The helpful swarm of female roller derby skaters blasted Ashland with thousands of tri-fold Move Your Money brochures which rank regional banks and credit unions with the big Wall Street banks. Any guess which work best for the local economy?

People want to support local economic development and are tired of Wall Street excesses that have crippled our country. Move Your Money is a campaign to move money away from the big greedy Wall Street Banks and put the bucks where they will do the most good right here at home.

Check out July 4 parade photos and look at the PDF brochure for a detailed description of Move Your MONEY Southern Oregon.

Oscar Grant verdict sparks protest in Portland

Portland, 09.07.2010 21:09

At 10pm protesters marched from Peninsula Park occupying the streets and demonstrating against the police as a result of the verdict given to Oakland Police Officer Johannes Mehserle who killed Oscar Grant January 1st 2009. Portland, USA. 08/07/2010

Today Mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and not 2nd degree murder, or 1st degree murder as many would have desired. Portlanders mobilised at short notice to speak out against the police and the fresh verdict, marching to Martin Luther King Boulevard from the park shouting, "ACAB - All coppers are bastards" amongst other terms. The police were all over the scene, monitoring beforehand from afar as people gathered for the event. A number of windows were smashed at a Bank of America on Martin Luther King Blvd. and at Portland Community College - Cascades Campus. At all times the police urged the protesters to move on to the sidewalk or they would be arrested whilst two bike cops led the plethora of police cars.

In December, readers and individual board members of several of the organizations in the US abolitionist movement had signed--without their full boards’ or their memberships’ knowledge--a “confidential” memorandum, which they then sent to the French organizers of the World Congress Against the Death Penalty, stating bluntly that, “As international representatives of the US abolition movement, we cannot agree to the involvement of Abu-Jamal or his lawyers in the World Congress beyond attendance.”

ThisCantBeHappening! this past week obtained a copy of that secret memorandum.
