SchNEWS 731 - GM: Against the Grain

United Kingdom, 18.07.2010 12:39

This week sees GM firmly back in the spotlight. On Wednesday the EU took a huge step in pushing forward the genetic modification agenda by copping out of regulation and putting the decision on whether to GM grow or not back into the hands of national governments. The European Commission approved changes to the rules which may break the deadlock that has prevented any significant cultivation of GM crops in Europe. What does this mean for GM production in the UK and other nation-states? And where does this leave the resistance movement?

Education vs. Incarceration: The Early Release Program in Illinois

United States, 17.07.2010 15:07

With a current state budget deficit in Illinois of some $13 billion, among the largest in the country, state legislators are making tough decisions about where to save money. Recently, Governor Pat Quinn proposed an “early release” program for prison inmates who have committed nonviolent crimes, but it was quickly met by a political backlash. The state has also seen severe cuts in public education. With the current economic crisis, Illinois residents will soon have to decide which they value more―education or incarceration.

Nurses Protest at Gubernatorial Candidate Meg Whitman's Home

San Francisco Bay Area, 17.07.2010 06:39

Saying that Meg Whitman's election would threaten their meal and rest breaks and put patient care in jeopardy, nurses protested in front of the Republican candidate's home on July 15th. Nurses decided to take to the streets in large numbers after Whitman mailed letters and fliers to nurses' homes telling them not to believe statements made by the California Nurses Association. The day of action started with over 1,100 people chanting in protest in front of Whitman's Atherton home and ended with a rally and speakers' event at Cañada College.

The Oscar Grant Verdict: A Rage In Black America

DC, 16.07.2010 19:10

There is a rage in Black America. It is righteous. It is justified. It is unrequited. It is a rage at being Black in America that has existed ever since there has been Black in America. After hearing of the pitifully soft verdict handed down by the all white jury in the Oscar Grant murder trial I thought again of this rage. And I remembered reading a few years ago one scholar’s survey of Black history and his being intrigued by “the extent to which African Americans have fantasized about political violence – specifically, violent revolt” as a matter of political “instrument” or “catharsis.” Post-racialism and race neutrality are fantasies; the Oscar Grant killing and trial, and the Black reaction to the verdict, are real. And so is the pervasive rage that is a characteristic - a "property" - of being Black in America. Audio

Justice for Oscar Grant: Systemic Police Brutality and State Terrorism

LA, 16.07.2010 04:39

Across America, daily incidents of police brutality and state terrorism occur. One of many the cold-blooded killings occurred January 1, 2009 with the murder of Oscar Grant - unarmed, offering no resistance, thrust face-down on the ground, shot in the back, and killed. The event captured on video by at least four individual cameras.

His killer: Bay Area transit officer, Johannes Mehserle was tried for the killing. The jury was told to consider four possible verdicts: innocent, second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, or involuntary manslaughter, jurors decided the latter.

Grant's family will appeal the verdict and is suing the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) for $25 million, his mother Wanda Johnson saying "My son was murdered (and) the law has not held the officer accountable." It rarely does for Black, Latino, or other minorities, no matter the injustice. Civil rights lawyer, John Burris, representing Grant's family in the civil suit, said: "The system is rarely fair when a police officer shoots an African-American male." Community Rally Supports Jackson County Services

Rogue Valley, 15.07.2010 23:10

July 14, 2010 -- Medford, Oregon

Jackson County citizens rallied with strong support for county workers & for county services. Local organizations such as the Southern Oregon Central Labor Council, Oregon Action and Jobs with Justice stood side by side with workers in front of the old Jackson County Courthouse. "Enough is enough: We Demand Quality Public Services."

- CONTRACT BARGAINING PROBLEMS -
The harsh, unreasonable and unwarranted demands of county negotiators do NOT have community support. The taxes we pay get the best bang for the buck when we invest in a workforce that provides top notch services. Jackson County employees have done their share in downsizing government this last few years. At its peak several years ago the Jackson County budget supported a workforce of over 700 employees while today the numbers are below 550. Fewer workers work harder while at the same time this workforce has made concessions year after year.

PG's Taxicab Drivers Are a Political Force

DC, 15.07.2010 17:10

Prince George's County's taxicab industry is dominated by a few large companies, such as Silver Cab and Paramount Cab. According to witnesses at yesterday's hearing before the Prince George's County Council, these companies pay only $100 a year for each of their taxicab's medallions, yet drivers are routinely charged $330 a week - or $17,000 a year - to lease a taxicab from these companies. Getachew Mengesha is an organizer with the Prince George's County Taxi Workers Alliance. He said, "When I came to the United States, I thought I came to [a] free country… but when I get into this industry, I was like a volunteer slave." Audio

Why Volunteer at the Hagertown's Clinic?

DC, 14.07.2010 21:10

I have volunteered (on and off) over five years at the Shady Grove clinic. I read the requests in the WACDTF newsletter about helping at the Hagerstown clinic. I "heard" how difficult the situation is there and I wanted to check it out. I now really enjoy going to Hagerstown once per month. Here is the honest part: if you travel from DC or near Baltimore to the Hagerstown clinic, you will spend almost five hours total—travel and defending time combined. Some people may think—that is a huge part of my Saturday. I would agree with you but trust me that it's amazingly rewarding and you will experience first-hand why our group is needed and appreciated by the Hagerstown clinic staff and the patients. You will leave feeling like you helped a woman in need because you are helping to protect her rights. wacdtf.org

AETA4 Indictment Dismissed, but Re-indictment possible

Portland, 14.07.2010 06:38

A U.S. District Court has thrown out the indictment of four animal rights activists who were charged with violating the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, because the government did not clearly explain what, exactly, the protesters did.

When Joseph Buddenberg, Maryam Khajavi, Nathan Pope and Adriana Stumpo were arrested in 2009, prosecutors said little other than that the group allegedly chalked slogans on the sidewalk, distributed fliers and attended protests. Later, when they were officially indicted, the government was still tight-lipped about how their non-violent, above-ground protests amounted to "terrorism."

In response, the Center for Constitutional Rights and attorney Matthew Strugar led an effort to have the indictments dismissed. In short, they argued that the charges should be dropped because they seem to involve only protected First Amendment speech, but that in order to make that argument the defendants' speech must be clearly identified.
