Santa Cruz Peace Camp 2010 Perseveres Through Six Sheriff Raids

Santa Cruz, CA, 10.08.2010 19:08

On the night of Monday, August 9th, between 20 and 40 people gathered, many laid out in sleeping bags, for the 37th night of Peace Camp 2010's high profile protest at the Santa Cruz County Building. Around 4:30am on Tuesday morning, eight Sheriff's deputies were ticketing, evicting, and hauling two people to jail. The total number of citations is now 24, with the arrest total at an additional 9, mostly on the same charge of violating California's anti-lodging law PC 647e, a "disorderly conduct" code which could result in jury trials and public defenders.

Warning to Activists! Darren Thurston's Computer "Security" Business

Portland, 09.08.2010 23:39

A warning to anyone who has received computer security services from someone going by hard_mac, or rad_boy: Your consultant was once working for the FBI, and may still be. Since Darren Thurston's release from prison, the informant in the Green Scare A.L.F. / E.L.F. case has resurfaced as a computer security consultant.

Thurston became an asset for the federal government in the Green Scare case after his arrest on arson charges for the 2001 torching by the Animal Liberation Front of a BLM wild horse holding barn in Susanville, California. In exchange for reduced charges, he implicated several others in serious arsons.

Thurston's computer security consulting site can be viewed here. Perhaps not by coincidence, there is information another government informant, Justin Samuel, has also gone into the computer security field. Samuel provided 86 pages of testimony, and perhaps additional undocumented information, to prosecutors investigating mink releases in 1999.

July 31 Call to Action Against Racism and Fascism: Portland report

Portland, 09.08.2010 16:38

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 31st about 65 people converged in downtown Portland to participate in the Call to Action Against Racism and Fascism, a coordinated effort by anti-racists in North America and beyond. In Portland, anti-racists from Portland Anti-Racist Action, Sisters of the Road, Rose City Copwatch, and Bring the Ruckus along with others from the community came together to oppose bigotry and white supremacist organizing in their city. The crowd was addressed by speakers from Rose City Copwatch and the Center for New Community who spoke to the need to confront racism and bridge struggles against white supremacist violence. The crowd then energetically marched through the Old Town neighborhood chanting "No Nazis, No KKK, No Fascist USA!" The anti-racists marched to the home of Jeffrey Jay Thomas at the Sally McCracken Building. Thomas (AKA Skinhead J) is affiliated with Blood and Honour American Division--a neo-Nazi group--and has also been involved with National Socialist Movement. The flyer distributed by the demonstrators

Over Hundred Supporters Rally to 'Free Bradley Manning' inside a US Marine Corps Base

United States, 09.08.2010 14:37

120 supporters rallied yesterday to "Free Bradley Manning!" in Quantico, VA, a small town within a US Marine Corps base. Pfc. Manning was transfer to Quantico only seven days ago after two months in solitary confinement in Kuwait. Organized by CodePink and Courage to Resist in only five days, the rally was covered by CNN, ABC, international and local media. Despite being declared off limits to all service members stationed at Quantico, a number of Marines stopped by to talk about the issues. Read More from Indybay

Manning, of course, is the courageous Army intelligence analyst turned whistleblower, who admitted leaking "260,000 classified United States diplomatic cables and video of a (US) airstrike in Afghanistan that killed 97 civilians last year," and an "explosive (39 minute) video of an American helicopter attack in Baghdad that left 12 people dead, including two employees of the Reuters news agency" — "collateral murder" he felt obligated to expose. Attorney Ed Frey Arrested on 35th Night of Santa Cruz Peace Camp 2010

Santa Cruz, CA, 09.08.2010 06:09

On August 7th, shortly before midnight, Santa Cruz County Sheriffs began to awaken and arrest 72 year old constitutional lawyer Edward Frey as he slept on the plaza of the County Courthouse. It was the 35th consecutive night of Santa Cruz Peace Camp 2010, a demonstration against the Santa Cruz Sleeping Ban, officially known as M.C. 6.36.010, which makes it a crime to sleep outdoors in Santa Cruz, with or without bedding, at any time between the hours of 11pm to 8:30am.

Noise Demonstration at Santa Cruz County Jail

Santa Cruz, CA, 09.08.2010 05:09

Fuck ICE writes: On Friday evening, August 6, we gathered outside the Santa Cruz County Jail to demonstrate our solidarity with the people locked up inside and express our hatred of imprisonment. About 30-40 of us stood in the middle of Blaine Street, next to both the main County Jail (where 336 people are locked up) and the Women's Facility (21 people). We banged on drums made from 55-gallon barrels with the intention of creating as much noise as possible to breach the prison walls.

Nest Surveyors Arrested

Portland, 09.08.2010 00:09

On Saturday August 1st, 4 NEST surveyors were arrested in the Willamette National Forest. NEST (northwest ecosystem survey team) has been monitoring timber sales for over 10 years. NEST volunteers use NEPA and national forest guide lines to establish nesting zones for the red tree vole, the main diet of the northern spotted owl. NEST has worked with several Oregon National Forests to help establish breeding ground and habit for both endangered species.

On Friday July 31st, two Linn county sheriffs and a Forest Service LEO came to NEST camp. They harassed and threatened the few surveyors left back at camp. They claimed that the NEST camp was in private land and not the national forest. Though all public maps showed NEST camp on forest service land. The 4 NEST surveyors are facing criminal trespassing plus restitution. The police searched the camp and took pictures of the camp without a warrant.

If you wish to make donations or find out more about NEST or are interested in volunteering please contact NEST by Email: nestcascadia@gmail.com

Detained migrants on hunger strike

United Kingdom, 08.08.2010 23:09

"Today we raise our voices until liberty is ours. [...] We deserve to be heard and until such time, we fight."

Around 150 migrants held at Campsfield migrant prison near Kidlington are on hunger strike "as a result of the treatment of detainees in detention centres especially for people who have been detained for a long period of time".

"Our lives incidentally have been stalled without any hope of living a life, having a family or any future [...] some of us are tortured and even face death or mental distress [...] We are issued removal directions without given enough time for an appeal. [...] On a regular basis, we are tortured, restrained, strapped like animals and beating to effect removal."

Local campaigners have responded by immediately organising several solidarity demos and calling for people to write to their MPs.

At least one detainee perceived as a ringleader has been transferred to another detention centre and placed in solitary detention.

The next demo is Monday 9th August, from 7pm, at Campsfield, Langford Lane, Kidlington. Cyclists will meet at St Giles at 6pm to ride there together. There are also regular buses from Oxford.

Skeletons in Target's political closet: immigrant and LBGTQ advocates come out against corporate hypocrisy

United States, 08.08.2010 09:08

[On August 5], about 75 immigrant rights and LGBTQ advocates demonstrated in front of Target, over their connection to Republican candidate for governor Tom Emmer. They condemned Target’s $150,000 contribution to MNForward, which used the money for a television ad urging the election of Emmer who is infamous for his anti-immigrant, anti-gay, and anti-minimum wage views.

The protesters carried 4 four-foot-tall dia de los muertos skeletons, signifying Emmer's offensive positions on immigrants, GLBTQ people, and low income workers, as well as Target's corporate political contributions.
