Activists Increase Militance in Wake of Bush's Re-installment

Portland, 12.11.2004 07:01

We held our signs high. We passed out flyers. We've marched in the streets. We've blocked traffic. We made noise and cried out against the war, against oppression. We went home with uplifted spirits, again preaching to the choir and irking passersby. We even went out and voted.

But the monster is still in office. There is to be four more years of absolute terror in the white house. Four more years behind a veneer of moral values and nationalism. We are fucking mad.

We need mass decentralized actions, fucking shit up at night. In every city, against, against military recruitment centers, against republican offices, against banks, against walmarts, and against - every component of the military industrial compex.

Why Is Cash Strapped Portland Spending Money on a "Cold Case" Program?

Portland, 12.11.2004 06:52

It was announced this evening that Oregon faces a $1 billion shortfall. Portland is strapped for revenues and cutting programs, yet it can apparently find enough extra cash to fund a "Cold Case" program which will seek to solve 280 cold cases from the 1970s forward.

This decision is being made at a time when there is so much crime in Portland neighborhoods that police cannot begin to respond adequately to the many complaints. Instead, they respond by degree with burglaries under a certain amount and in certain parts of town, animal nuisance and neglect, noise, vandalism, etc. being virtually ignored. We can't afford to keep criminals in prison and many are released prematurely after having done little or no time or community service.

Why is the city wasting money "tidying up" after 280 years-old cases that benefit few people when it already has its hands full with current cases and we DO NOT HAVE MONEY TO SPARE?

Veteran's Day in Chicago: Finding Meaning in a Meainingless War

Chicago, 12.11.2004 05:00

Stacey Paeth, Military Families Speak OutThis morning in downtown Chicago, Vietnam Vets Against the War held their annual Veteran’s Day rally, drawing a crowd of about fifty Vets, along with their family members and supporters. They have gotten together for over thirty years now to honor Veterans by standing up for their rights, denouncing their being sent into unjust wars and calling for the US to put it’s money where it’s mouth is and "support our troops." However, this year differed from those that came before it in one very significant aspect: taking the podium was a newcomer, representing a generation of veterans just recently finding their voice and their place in the anti-war movement. This year‘s rally included veterans back from Iraq and opposed to the occupation. Read More | Photos: [ 1 | 2 | 3 ]

Students, Politicians and Community Members In Solidarity with UC Service Workers

Santa Cruz, CA, 12.11.2004 04:49

On Wednesday, November 10, hundreds of people demonstrated and bargined at UC Santa Cruz for better wages and working conditions for AFSCME members at the nine University of California (UC) campuses and five medical centers. Local 3299 AFSCME members (American, Federal, State, County and Municipal Employees) are employed by the UC to serve food; clean bathrooms, dorms, labs, offices, and hospitals; drive shuttle buses, and park cars.

In addition to a large rally in the Baytree Plaza, AFSCME workers, UC students and community members entered the bargining meeting that took place in Conference Room D above the Baytree Bookstore.

The rally and bargining meeting effectively demonstrated that AFSCME workers, UC students and members of the Santa Cruz community, including Mardi Wormhoudt, the Chair of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors, and newly elected Santa Cruz City Council member Tony Madrigal, are committed to improving the working conditions for service workers in the UC system.

Tensions rise as BU inches closer to a Biosafety Lab in Boston

Boston, 12.11.2004 03:14

Faneuil Hall was home to a public forum Wednesday night on the biosafety lab that is currently scheduled to be built in the South End's Boston Medical Center. The forum opened with a ten minute overview presented by Boston University officials, including Boston University Senior Vice President Richard J. Towle, which was interrupted by a woman demanding that the lab be referred to as the "proposed lab." After the somewhat contentious presentation was over, the hall became open for Bostonians to voice approval or disapproval about the proposed lab. Advocates and concerned citizens voiced their opinions, but drew no real conclusions, besides an agreement that the conflict is far from over. Attendees argued passionately for an open question and answer session with both sides of the conflict, and "more information and more respect" to be shown by Boston University towards concerned Boston residents.

Laura y Zigor: Absueltos

Greens & Libertarian Presidential Candidates Demand Recount in Ohio

Portland, 12.11.2004 00:19

David Cobb and Michael Badnarik, the 2004 presidential candidates for the Green and Libertarian parties, today announced their intentions to file a formal demand for a recount of the presidential ballots cast in Ohio.

"Due to widespread reports of irregularities in the Ohio voting process, we are compelled to demand a recount of the Ohio presidential vote. Voting is the heart of the democratic process in which we as a nation put our faith. When people stand in line for hours to exercise their right to vote, they need to know that all votes will be counted fairly and accurately. We must protect the rights of the people of Ohio, as well as all Americans, and stand up for the right to vote and the right for people's votes to be counted. The integrity of the democratic process is at stake," the two candidates said in a joint statement.

The candidates also demanded that Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, a Republican who chaired the Ohio Bush campaign, recuse himself from the recount process.

The world mourns Arafat yet peace remains elusive

Hudson Mohawk, 11.11.2004 22:56

Although his political obituary was written again and again, Yasser Arafat displayed a legendary tenacity and an amazing ability to pull through at the eleventh hour, usually thanks to his remarkable skill in cobbling together coalitions and allies from very disparate backgrounds. Trapped by Ariel Sharon in the rubble of his Ramallah headquarters, though, Arafat was marginalized politically and virtually powerless militarily. He departs the Palestinian and Middle Eastern political stage as a wraith of his former self, with no political heir apparent. US government offers condolences, blame. Funeral in Egypt, no burial in Bethlehem.

Hudson Mohawk, 11.11.2004 16:25

Cong. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio says that every vote will be recounted but assures voters that Kerry has lost; he claims the Democrats did a good job in Ohio protecting the right of voters. The mainstream media is beginning to pick up the story on voting problems but dismisses it as internet conspiracy theories.

Portland, 11.11.2004 07:05

Friday evening, November 5, 2004, a presentation was held at the First Methodist Church in Portland Oregon concerning the erosion of Civil Rights in this country and the emergence of the National Security State. Much of the material was concerning the USA PATRIOT Act.

After giving a brief biography of both speakers the moderator introduced the first speaker, Elden Rosenthall. Elden Rosenthall, according to the moderator, is the premier civil rights lawyer in Portland. He's been involved in serveral police accountability cases over the years. Ohio sit-in to protest massive vote fraud postponed due to FBI

Portland, 11.11.2004 06:21

I have been debating all night whether or not to share this info with everyone (because I know how quickly it will spread and how paranoid everyone will become), but have ultimately decided to do so. Earlier today, the FBI showed up at my door. Apparently someone (*cough*right-winger*cough*) had reported me to them for attempting to organize a 'terrorist' activity...

Honestly, I do not know what to do. I'm fairly sure the only reason they showed up is because a right-winger reported me, not necessarily because of what I was trying to organize. But apparently under the dreaded Patriot Act civil disobedience CAN be considered terrorist, and I can be thrown in jail without formal charges or rights. So I'm postponing the sit-in for now... The point has been raised that holding it on the same day as CASE-Ohio's hearing would be splintering our resources, and I do believe I agree. We need to regroup and examine our options a bit.

N10 actie-verslagen en ontwikkelingen

Netherlands, 11.11.2004 00:15

update-N10 11-11:
