Corporate spy was active in Nottingham

United Kingdom, 09.02.2011 21:49

The Mark Kennedy case has thrown the world of police and private spying on activists into the spotlight. One of the many revelations about Kennedy is that he can be linked to private spying company Global Open. Kennedy worked as a consultant for them and set up his own company, Tokra, using the address of Global Open director Heather Millgate.

Nottingham Indymedia can reveal that a second spy linked to Global Open, Paul Mercer, was actively involved with environmental and animal rights campaigns in Nottingham, including Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill (NAIL). Mercer was involved in groups in Nottingham in the period 2002-2007.

Mercer was publicly exposed for his role in spying on anti-arms trade campaigners, Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT) in 2007. His contract for the operation was finalised through Global Open.

Good Old US of A

Portland, 07.02.2011 22:03

Suppose you had a country that invades other countries because they think they may be in some danger. This strong country just happens to be the biggest arms dealer in the world, the runner up not even close. This country has over 800 military bases, (maybe as many as 1000) around the world and 0 foreign bases on its territory. This is a rich country that got its start by slaughtering the inhabitants and taking control of the vast lands. This country tortures its prisoners, jails more citizens per capita than any other nation. This country will lock up those who cry for peace but honor those who lie, cheat and try to destroy all its freedoms. This country makes millionaires out of scoundrels and liars and the press is bought and paid for. The leaders say that we must go to war but stay back in their air conditioned halls of government and watch as millions of poor people are murdered or injured beyond belief. This country is not Germany of the 1930s or the U.S.S.R. of the 60s; not even Italy of the 20s; this is the United States of America of 2011. My country! I did not serve in the US Navy for this!

The people of the United States approved the "State of the Union" address by Obama a few weeks ago by a margin of 92% to 8%--I was stunned. These are just words that have already been forgotten, what the hell is the matter with our progressives in this country?

Gitmo is still open, DOD is considering pushing the withdrawal dates back in Iraq, we are still killing women and children in Afghanistan and now Pakistan. People are losing their homes at alarming rates, unemployment is at 9-26% depending on who you are and where you live. We are out of money in Oregon and will cut vital services to our schools and our most vulnerable citizens and say, "We just don't have the money."

The cost of our occupations and war for Portland is over 1.4 BILLION dollars, the cost for Oregon is over 9 BILLION dollars, yet not one politician has pointed this out during any budget discussions. We should have a counter in front of our City Hall telling people how much we are wasting supporting this corrupt empire; maybe people will begin to understand why we are going broke.

Charter Schools vs. Public Schools, Past and Present

DC, 07.02.2011 19:50

“The first charter school movement in the United States started from the Virginia Massive Resistance campaign,” said Shanta Driver, an education activist from Detroit and national co-chair of By Any Means Necessary (BAMN). “[It] was a campaign to defeat the desegregation order of Brown v. Board of Education, and it was local, white, racist organizing to create schools throughout the south that would be private schools, publicly funded and that wouldn’t be subject to court ordered desegregation.” This past April, Driver and other activists came to D.C. to protest President Barack Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s education policies which place great emphasis on promoting charter schools. In the south, charter schools “are, in their majority, all white schools,” Driver said. “And they’re being created combining public funding and private funding to create a separate educational system for many, many, many young white people.

The Indypendent Issue 160: 'All We Need is Hate'

NYC, 06.02.2011 23:59

The recent shootings in Tucson, Arizona have brought the question of right-wing violence to the forefront. Arun Gupta analyzes right-wing violence in the latest issue of the Indypendent:

"Numerous heavily armed and extreme-right fanatics have been arrested for making “terroristic threats” against the president, foiled before they could carry out plots to assassinate Obama, and in one instance killed be¬fore he could finish a radioactive dirty bomb – described as “far ahead of Jose Padilla, the accused al-Qaeda dirty-bomb plotter” – that he intended to detonate in Washington, D.C. Others have been arrested while on their way to murder public figures or after making death threats against them. Some pundits have issued explicit calls for someone to shoot Obama, while many prominent right-wing talk-show hosts and Republicans have openly endorsed armed violence against the federal government or sitting politicians.

This is occurring as anger is being whipped up, especially by the right-wing media, against Muslims, Mexicans, gays and lesbians, and politicians, which serves to legitimize violent attacks and murders against members of these groups.

The Tucson shooting was thus no surprise, but it should serve as a wake-up call that hate and violence are encoded in the political DNA of the American right."
