Stand up to Nazis in Eugene

Portland, 25.02.2011 07:30

These unsavory characters have recently been spotted frequenting the Wandering Goat Coffee Company, a local counterculture hangout. Other white supremacists have been harassing people in the Whitaker neighborhood. There have also been multiple accounts of Neo-Nazis stopping outside of the Wandering Goat and giving the Nazi "Roman Salute" to customers.

If you see them, or any other boneheads, let them know that Fascists are not welcome in our community. Together we are strong.

Video Report Back: Religious Leaders Speak Out Against Obama's 2012 Budget

Portland, 25.02.2011 07:30

February 16, 2011 Portland Oregon Press Conference by religious community opposing outrageous bloated military budget and inhumane cuts in social service in the recent Obama Budget for 2012.

Religious Leaders Speak Out Against Obama's 012 Budget

Clergy from various Portland denominations each spoke briefly, condemning the U.S. misplaced priorities and blatant disregard for human life worldwide.

First to speak was Rev. Bill sinkford, Senior Minister of First Unitarian Church; The Reverend was followed by Rabbi Joseph Wolf of the Havurah Shalom Community; Mark Knudson, Senior Minister of Augustana Lutheran Church; and Lynne Smouse-Lopez, Senior Pastor at Ainsworth United Church of Christ.

Fundamental to the Press Conference was a long graphic demonstrating the values inherent in the 2012 budget. Taking up over half of the graphic was a large red area portraying the 59% of the budget reserved for military spending.

At the other end of the graphic were the various other areas of expenditures provided for in the budget: 6% for Health and Human Service; 6% for Transportation; 4% to the States; 4% for Education; 4% for Other Programs; 3% for Department of Homeland Security; 3% for Housing and Urban Development; 2% for Justice; 2% for Agriculture; 1% for NASA; 1% for Energy(excludes nuclear weapons program); 1% Labor; 1% Treasury; 1% Interior; 1%Interior; 1% Environmental Protection Agency; 1% Commerce.

The opinion came through loud and clear from all who spoke that the U.S. is not fulfilling it's democratic obligations to it's citizens and also is a force encouraging and fostering violence world wide.

"We got sold out; they got bailed out!" Anti-Eviction Rally on S. Goodman Street

Rochester, 25.02.2011 07:18

On February 21, Take Back the Land - Rochester called on the community to protest Fannie Mae's move to evict five people from a house in Rochester and render them homeless.

Despite many attempts, the government-backed corporate bank has refused to negotiate with the tenants of 820 South Goodman Ave. Despite Fannie Mae's $90 billion bailout from the government to help keep people in their houses, Fannie Mae is still putting people out on the street. For the past 7 months the residents, all formerly homeless people, have been making improvements (roof repair, dry-wall repair, painting, etc.) to a house which would have otherwise fallen into complete disrepair due to Fannie Mae's neglect. Enjoy Rochester Indymedia's video report-back!

Barclays Bank becomes target as Anti-Cuts fight continues.

United Kingdom, 23.02.2011 07:35

Actions took place across Britain in opposition to government spending cuts on Saturday 19th February.

In Bristol an estimated 3000 people joined a march through the city which had been called by the Bristol and District Anti Cuts Alliance before gathering on College Green for speeches. The march took place in the week after the Government had abandoned plans to sell off Britain's forests in the face of mounting public anger, and days before Bristol City Council is due to announce its slashed budget. Arrests were reported during the march and at solidarity demos afterwards.

In Nottingham over 1000 joined a 'Keep the Post Public' demonstration called by the Communication Workers Union (CWU)

About 1000 people marched from the Shirehall in Shrewsbury to a rally in the Square. Earlier this week, Shropshire Council approved plans to cut almost £40m from the capital spending budget over the next four years.

Several actions took place across London including; Lewisham's Carnival Against the Cuts attracted about 1000 people, as they marched from the town hall, whilst Hackney's March Against the Cuts saw 500 take to the streets. In Wood Green the local bank was also occupied, in Brixton the local branch was closed down by 40 people.

Many branches of Barclays Bank were targeted in response to a call-out from UK uncut after it was revealed that the Bank had paid only 1% tax on its £1.3Bn profits in 2009, and that Chief Executive Bob Diamond is likely to get a £9m bonus this month. [see Full Article for more.]

Voldemort Elected Mayor of Chicago

Chicago, 23.02.2011 07:30

Rahm "Voldemort" Emanuel — ballet dancer, corporate hack, and Democratic-party politico — has won the 2011 Chicago mayoral race. He skirted a bid to oust him from the ballot on a technicality, and outraised funds against his combined five mayoral opponents by a 5-to-1 ratio, playing off positive vibes as "Obama's guy".

Emanuel's political career is rife with controversy, conflicts of interests, and corporate kowtowing. He worked as a consultant to Richard M. Daley (whom he's succeeding as mayor) while illegally consulting for bond firms which did business with the city. He joined the Bill Clinton campaign and served as arm-twister-in-chief to marshall Democrats' votes in 1993 to approve the controversial NAFTA treaty.

Emanuel called Clinton's welfare "reform" efforts "the most successful social policy experiment in a generation" (meanwhile, child poverty in the USA has climbed to 22% by 2010). He left the Clinton administration to become an investment banker and vice-chair of the Chicago Housing Authority, during which time he contributed to the CHA's controversial Plan for Transformation, demolishing public housing structures without replacing them.

Emanuel ran for Congress in 2002, vying for the seat previously held by Rod Blagojevich, and won the seat courtesy of the illegal efforts of city water workers whose boss plead guilty to bribery charges. In Congress, Emanuel orchestrated opposition against progressive Democratic candidates, admitted to a pro-Iraq-war stance even without evidence, and accumulated a massive bankroll as the largest recipient among U.S. House representatives of donations from the financial services industry.

Emanuel was plucked from Congress in 2008 to serve as President Obama's White House Chief of Staff, during which time he tried to stymie Obama's modest health care reform plan, attacked liberal Democrats critical of Obama's lukewarm efforts, and criticized organized labor.

In his bid for Mayor of Chicago, Emanuel falsely claimed high results from Chicago charter schools, received considerable campaign contributions from the financial sector, and has ties to the firm that won Chicago's controversial parking meter lease.

Emanuel all but echoes Daley's opposition to antiwar and grassroots activists, privatization of Chicago public resources, and ties to big business. And with Chicago still America's largest city without mayoral term limits, Chicago could well face more of the same policies from The Fifth Floor for quite some time.

Seattle Anti-Police Demo Report Back

Portland, 23.02.2011 07:30

This is a very short, incomplete recap of the most recent events in Seattle. It concerns only the anarchists, not the protests organized by the family of the deceased. Undoubtedly, someone else will write a more thorough analysis for those of you who don't live in Seattle...

On the night of Tuesday, February 15, the media began reporting that the City Prosecutor had decided not to prosecute police officer Ian Birk for the murder of John T. Williams. Soon after, an event appeared on Facebook, calling for people to meet at 6pm on Wednesday, February 16, for a night of protest at Westlake Plaza, a busy shopping district in the heart of Downtown Seattle. The next day, anarchists leafletted for the demonstration throughout Capitol Hill and into downtown. The first protest brought 600-700 people into the street, all marching without a permit...Another Facebook event appeared that night, urging further action despite Ian Birk's resignation from the police force. The second protest, on Friday, February 18th, brought a fluctuating group of about 150 people out onto the streets, most of whom marched behind anarchist banners and some of whom held black flags.

Once again, the march took off without a permit. Thousands (literally) of anarchist leaflets were thrown into the air. Chants such as "An eye for an eye, the pigs gotta die" and "Cops and judges, we don't need 'em, all we want is TOTAL FREEDOM!" were yelled at the police.

94.6% No Confidence and the Following Storm

Rochester, 23.02.2011 07:17

The latest here in Rochester, NY in our “war for the soul of our schools”. The teachers’ ballot vote of no confidence for Superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard passed overwhelmingly with 94.6% of those who voted stating that they had no confidence in Brizard. The numbers broke down to the following:

Of the 2868 votes cast, 2713 indicated that they do not have confidence in Superintendent Brizard while 140 indicated that they do have confidence in his leadership. 15 ballots were disqualified. This is the first time in the history of the Rochester City School District that a vote of no confidence in the superintendent has been conducted.

Following the vote last week, there was an onslaught of dismissive, distracting, dishonest media diversions intended to insert confusion and delegitimize the vote.

World Bank/IMF Resistance Consulta March 4 - 6 in Boston

Boston, 22.02.2011 02:29

On April 16th and 17th, people from all walks of life will gather in Washington, D.C. to resist the spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Why have people actively resisted these meetings every year for over a decade? - Because we are opposed to the promotion of Western economic interests though the distribution and withholding of global capital. - Because we oppose IMF-imposed austerity measures that force the poor and middle class to pay and suffer for the excesses of the rich, most recently in Greece. - Because we oppose the actions of the World Bank that have destroyed livelihoods and ecosystems across the globe to promote "development" that benefits only elites and foreign corporations.

Whole Foods Market Caves to Monsanto

Portland, 22.02.2011 02:29

After 12 years of battling to stop Monsanto's genetically-engineered (GE) crops from contaminating the nation's organic farmland, the biggest retailers of "natural" and "organic" foods in the U.S., including Whole Foods Market (WFM), Organic Valley and Stonyfield Farm, have agreed to stop opposing mass commercialization of GE crops, like Monsanto's controversial Roundup Ready alfalfa.
In exchange for dropping their opposition, WFM has asking for "compensation" to be paid to organic farmers for "any losses related to the contamination of his crop."

Video: Libre Libya-Portland Solidarity Rally

Portland, 22.02.2011 02:29

Portland Rally supporting the people of Libyan in their efforts to establish a more democratic government. The present leader, Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi, also known simply as Colonel Gaddafi, has been the de facto leader of Libya since a coup in 1969.
Solidarity Rally With Libya

People gathered on the steps at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland chanting patriotic and anti Gadaffi slogans, periodically marching around the perimeter of Pioneer Square.

The chants demonstrated the anger of the people against their dictator, whose reign has seen a decline in the economic fortunes of the country, despite being a major oil producer.
"One, two, three, Libya will be free;" "No more fear, that's why we're here;" "Down, down, with the butcher." This last refers in part to Abu Salim Prison, where, according to Human Rights Watch,1270 people were killed in 1996.

One young person I interviewed said "we are here because most of the men you see here today were exiled out of their country, 20, 30, 40 years ago.....and are not allowed to go back home, because of the Gadaffhi regime."
She says that Gadaffi has been killing his citizens for 42 years for no other reason than that they have a view for a prosperous and democratic Libya."
They want the basic democratic rights that we take for granted in this country, to be able to speak their mind and vote for who they want to represent them, and "because these people speak out for what they want to do, he kills them."
"In the past 3 days he has killed over 500 people."
To underscore this statistic, later in the Rally, a man stood up and called for "a moment of silence to honor the 500 people killed and over 2000 injured......by Gaddhafi and his mercenaries from Africa. He brought people from the outside to kill our own people.
We need to remember that every single moment."
