Penny for the Guy Ropes

United Kingdom, 05.03.2011 08:12

They came, they camped, they conquered (well, almost). During a soul-searching Dorset retreat, Climate Camp have decided to suspend tent-centred activism - citing the “radically different political landscape” of 2011. Having been through Drax, Kingsnorth, Heathrow, RBS, Copenhagen and one helluva lot of hummus, the group are now turning their attention to coordination with the wider anti-cuts and anti-austerity movement.

You Must Choose

Portland, 04.03.2011 04:42

You must stand against oppression no matter who is involved.

We should demand from our elected representatives that all members of AIPAC, (American Israeli Public Affairs Committee) take a loyalty oath to America; outrageous you say? Let me tell you a story. The Israeli Supreme Court is now considering a requirement for all non-Jews in Israel to take a loyalty oath to the state of Israel. Not so outrageous as you thought. This would be just like Christians demanding all non believers take a loyalty oath. This is a horrible way to exclude people from the political process. The abused have now become the abusers.

There will be a fundraiser for AIPAC at the Mittleman Center and I will be there with my sign, this will be my third year in front of this get-together and asking our politicians to stay away. Well, maybe this year our would be progressive reps will stay home; don't hold your breath. The PINOs will be there, (Progressives in Name Only) insider feasting themselves and they will get elected in 2012, why? We are a country that loves killing and occupation--we do it so well!

I want to say to all of you, choose, wars or schools, you cannot have both. Choose Good Health-care, or Empire---you cannot have both. A safe environment for your children or a slow death, not both! Many had thought that maybe President Obama would lead us out of the valley of corruption, WRONG.

After forty years of being a democrat, a few years ago I did one of my great Irish-Exits and ran from this once noble party and became a member of the Oregon Progressive Party. OPP stands for most things that I believe in and it is a very young party. You can go to one of our meetings and feel your voice is heard, people may not agree with you but we will fight for your right to speak.

So, this Sunday we will be at the fundraiser for an organization that spends millions wining and dining our reps, will you come and join us? What is happening in Gaza and the West Bank has been condemned by most nations, the US stops anything coming out of the Security Council by the use of our veto. The last vote on the continuation of building settlements was 122 nations to condemn and 14 Security Council Members also condemning the Israeli government but, one veto from the US and the matter died. Sad!

Liberal Democrats Spring Conference 2011: Sheffield

United Kingdom, 01.03.2011 02:05

Sheffield City Centre is expected to be turned into a virtual police state between 11th and 13th March as the Liberal Democrats converge on the City for their annual spring conference. The Sheffield Telegraph reports that there will be a six foot security fence and the Sheffield Star has reported that there will be 1,000 police officers defending the conference with plans to use riot gear and kettling if necessary, at a cost of £2 million. The official conference webpage links to the agenda and papers and delegates information.

The police have told the media that they are expecting between 2,500 and 3,000 protestors but the number could be much bigger. Sheffield ConDem Resistance have produced a flyer for the weekend. On Saturday 12th March a protest has been organised by the SWP's Right to Work campaign with the support of the Sheffield Anti Cuts Alliance with agreement with the Police — assemble 11am on Devonshire Green.

On Friday 4th March at noon there will be a anti-cuts protest outside the Town Hall, called by UNISON — this is the day on which the council budget is to be formally set.
