UPDATE ON LA CASA LAWSUIT

DC, 09.03.2011 19:08

What’s going on with the homeless in Ward One and former La Casa residents?[1] Currently designated warming centers are spuriously available to the homeless. Persons seeking shelter cannot rely on any particular hypothermia center being opened at any particular time, and persons must find out on a daily basis, sometimes unsuccessfully, where and how they are to obtain shelter. Warming centers can be as far as five-six miles away from the downtown area. Men’s shelters are filled to capacity. Former La Casa residents and other homeless in the Columbia Heights community were denied shelter when temperatures were below 32oF, in violation of the Homeless Services Reform Act, and live in uncertainty each night about their ability to gain access to adequate shelter. Homeless persons waited for many hours on the night of February 21, 2011, for instance, for access to local warming centers, or transportation to other shelters. The men slept outside in the snow overnight, or had to seek shelter in the hallways of nearby apartment buildings, laundromats, and on heating grates in order to get through the night.

Climate Camp Dissolves

United Kingdom, 08.03.2011 15:48

After 5 years of Climate Camps, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, a statement has been issued by the The Camp for Climate Action to say that "we will not organise a national Climate Camp in 2011" and that "we will not organise national gatherings as ‘Climate Camp’ or the Camp for Climate Action in 2011". This decision, and the process by which it was made, has been criticised by SchNews, "the act of a minority to shut-down an organisation which is meant to be run autonomously is entirely contradictory... Where Climate Camp goes after this, and whether local groups can effectively use the collective identity which has done so much for environmental activism over the last 5 years remains to be seen."

AIPAC protest photos & report back

Portland, 08.03.2011 08:30

On a chilly Sunday, about 75-100 folks gathered outside the Mittleman Jewish Community to protest against the annual AIPAC event yesterday. The protest was organized by AUPHR (Americans United for Palestinian Human RIghts) and SUPER (Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights). For about 2 hours, we shouted, chanted, and stood our ground, saying "No to AIPAC! No Support for Occupation! No Support for Apartheid!"

We went there to let AIPAC and its supporters know that we vehemently oppose US aid to Israel to continue its 60+ years of brutal and illegal occupation of Palestine. Israel would not be able to keep committing crimes and atrocities against the Palestinian people if it weren't for US support. According to If Americans Knew, Israel is the largest recipient of US military and economic aid since 1976. US gives Israel about $3 billion per year, about one-fifth of the US' entire foreign aid monies. The US currently provides Israel with $8.2 million in military aid every day! Israel continues to build illegal settlements on Palestinian land, demolish Palestinian homes, farms and orchards, destroy businesses and shops, arrest and torture the Palestinian people without due process, and bomb, shoot and kill them with impunity. We are always told that the budget deficits make it necessary for politicians to cut social programs, education and health care for us, but when it comes to funding wars, occupation and attacks on civilians in Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and other countries, there's always endless amounts of money!

US Rep Blumenauer birddogged for AIPAC support

Portland, 08.03.2011 08:30

The keynote speaker at the 2011 University of Oregon Public Interest Environmental Law Conference , US Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), caused controversy as members from the audience protested his involvement in both the acclaimed environmental law conference and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Oregon chapter meeting. Congressman Blumenauer served as the keynote speaker for both organizations in the same weekend.

banner being floated AIPAC <-- Enviro Justice -->
Halfway through Congressmen Blumenauer's speech promoting Portland's bicycle culture, protesters floated a 5 x 10 foot banner to the ceiling of the University of Oregon ballroom. The banner read "AIPAC" with an arrow pointing backwards and "Enviro Justice" with an arrow pointing forward. The group claims that being in lockstep with AIPAC contradicts environmental values.

Literature distributed by the protesters cited the environmental impacts of the occupation including the number of Palestinian olive trees uprooted by the Israeli military since the second intifada (over 500,000) and information about the Israeli bombing of the sewage treatment plant in Gaza resulting in raw sewage contaminating the Mediterranean Sea.

Suspended over the audience with 23 helium balloons, the banner remained throughout the presentation and onto the next day until it floated down on its own. The conference organizers censured audience questions during the Q & A to prevent protesters from addressing what they call "social and environmental justice contradictions."

Congressmen Blumenauer received further protest when he arrived at the AIPAC meeting on Sunday in Portland. Over three dozen protesters held signs protesting Israeli actions in the West Bank and Gaza and constructed a mock separation wall.

Sheffield Council Agrees Cuts and Redundancies #anticuts

United Kingdom, 07.03.2011 11:33

On 4th March, in the face of a trade union protest (audio) councillors voted for a package of £84 million of cuts in services and 273 redundancies. The Star has reported that "Lib Dems had their proposals approved after the opposition Labour group declined to put forward alternative plans, which could have been passed with support of the two Greens and lone independent". The Sheffield Green Party reports that "The Lib Dem budget was passed because Labour refused to vote against the cuts. The Green Party Councillors were the only ones to vote against the cuts.". The budget documents can be found on the Council web site.

Solidarity with Seattle

Portland, 07.03.2011 05:44

Diversity of tactics
A reminder to everyone, regarding the police repression unfolding this weekend in Seattle
(Read link at the bottom)

Solidarity is Action!
Do what feels right, support each other!
Leaflets, conversation, demonstrate, organize and smash, they all have a place.

Support each other and a diversity of tactics. Apply pressure and stay safe!

To condemn and not support petty vandalism against corporate and state property (our tax dollar that the people have extremely limited or no control over) promotes divisions amongst opposition to the status quo and reaffirms submission to illegitimate power, not to mention, hindering the symbolic aspirations of individuals or collectives. (If you don't know why one would attack corporate or state property, I suggest you learn and challenge your ideology, morality, and where you got it, but that is only a suggestion).

For a decentralized, anti-authoritarian movement with teeth!

Life and Death among Dogs: No Kill Now

Portland, 06.03.2011 22:39

Two days ago, a mother and her babies were to have arrived at Ananda Animal Rescue & Sanctuary. They were eagerly awaited, as they had all been through a lot and we looked forward to watching them blossom once they found the love and care they deserved in this world. Lily never did arrive in sanctuary. Instead, this is what happened to her (reposted from the Ananda FB page). We're so sad for her. Everyone should be. Please help us stop the killing.

Lily and her puppies were supposed to arrive today. We were looking forward to finally giving them the love and kindness they deserve. Lily never got much of a break in this world. She was extremely neglected, and when she showed up in a kill shelter in California with her little family of puppies, she weighed only about 30 lbs (roughly half what she should have.) And, in the dance of crisis and extortion common to kill shelters, Lily's story made it out to rescuers through the same teetering, cobbled-together, informal communication network in which all kill shelters seem to communicate with the outside world: "Yes, she's here. She will be killed this weekend unless you get her out."

(This, by the way, is a special annoyance of mine which is worth mentioning because it is one of the obstacles that stands in the way of saving dogs like Lily. It's apparently not bad enough that the public is usually kept in the dark about all the dogs being put to death inside these places. They have to make it even better by occasionally letting rescuers know that the animals will die unless WE, the RESCUERS, do all the work to save them. Not only that, but we usually get hit up for a pull fee, too. So small, independent rescuers who have almost no resources are forced to pay money to a huge, tax-funded, government agency "or else" they will kill every animal without another option. Basically, we're subsidizing them through our unpaid labor. This is part of the anachronistic system that is killing millions of dogs and cats in this country every year: Kill shelters take in too many animals, they plead for help from rescuers "or else," and then they don't let anyone take the animal without paying an often exorbitant pull fee. Rescuers can't always afford to come up with these fees over and over and over again to save these animals. Why is there a fee to rescuers who are doing the shelter's job FOR them??? Why aren't the shelters giving us money to help them do their jobs?)...

Police Shut Down WI Capitol as Walker Proposes Massive Upward Redistribution of State’s Wealth

United States, 05.03.2011 21:54

March 2, 2011 — Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker unveiled billions of dollars worth of cuts to social programs and further tax cuts to the rich today in front of a small crowd of supportive citizens and lawmakers. In Walker’s budget proposal, schools would be prohibited from raising taxes to make up for the $900 million loss of state funding. Medicaid users will pay higher co-pays and deductibles to cover $500 million in cuts to the federal health care program for low-income people. Walker’s proposal will eliminate the rules that allow non-violent prisoners to earn time off of their sentences through good behavior, as well as in-state tuition for children of undocumented immigrants. Cities and counties will lose, respectively, $60 million and $34 million in state funding. Citizens in the audience were both admiring and respectful.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of demonstrators flooded the capitol lawn, banging on noisemakers and shouting “Recall Walker!” and “Kill the Bill!” Protestors swarmed the capitol entrance on State Street demanding access to their locked capitol building during the budget address. Next, they marched towards the King St. entrance in order to find the media crews who, protest leaders said, were busy filming a much smaller demonstration. Demonstrators have been demanding entrance to the building ever since 4 p.m. on Sunday when the police first locked the doors. But according to the state’s Department of Administration (DOA) the capitol is open to the public. read more

Lawrence Lessig speaks on the corrosive effects of money in politics

United States, 05.03.2011 21:16

Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig spoke on the corrosive effects of money in politics and potential remedies to the problem. For much of his career Lessig has focused on law and technology, and his current work addresses the question of "institutional corruption," influences that weaken the effectiveness of an institution and public trust. He is the author of Remix (2008), Code v2 (2007), Free Culture (2004), The Future of Ideas (2001) and Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace (1999) and has served as lead counsel in a number of important cases marking the boundaries of copyright law in a digital age.

The talk was followed by a panel discussion including Sherri Greenberg (UT Center for Politics and Governance, LBJ School of Public Affairs), Steve Bickerstaff (UT Law School), and Brian Roberts (UT Department of Government) read more & video
