Associated Press.

Political Tsunami Unleashed in California by Devastation in Japan

San Francisco Bay Area, 14.03.2011 17:24

A second explosion has rocked Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex, following the unprecedented 8.9 earthquake and mega tsunami in the northeast part of the country. Over five thousand miles away, Californians are feeling the fallout of Japan's tragedy. A tsunami triggered by the natural disaster caused the death of one Californian, an estimated $40 million in damage, and spillage of fuels and other pollutants in the seaside towns of Santa Cruz and Crescent City. The devastating events of recent days have Californians wondering if their own coastal nuclear power planets are safe, causing a tsunami of political debate to unfurl.

On Wisconsin: Antiunion Measures in Madison Spur Local, National Democracy Protests

Chicago, 14.03.2011 02:54

On February 15, 2011, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker proposed a bill to remove collective bargaining rights and reduce pay and benefits for Wisconsin public sector unions. That proposal spurred growing protests at the state capital in Madison, Wisconsin ever since, and an evacuation by fourteen Democrats in the Wisconsin Senate (the "Wisconsin 14") to block a quorum needed for a vote. Solidarity protests in support of Wisconsin workers also grew, as did sister protests against similar anti-union measures in other states.

On March 10, 2011, the Wisconsin Senate approved on a variation of the bill which didn't require a quorum, which was later signed into law. Despite the questionable (and possibly illegal) maneuver and a homecoming by the Wisconsin 14, massive protests in Madison will continue and more are planned.

Day of the Fallen - Austin, Texas 3/2/11

United States, 14.03.2011 00:21

The coffins were painted black and represented the 138 Texas construction workers and laborers who lost their lives on the job in 2009. Their memories served as the rallying cry for the roughly 600 people who gathered at the Capitol in support of new legislation on workers’ rights and safety. The Workers Defense Project organized the rally and gathered lawmakers, clergy members and activists with the families of those who had died.

“The cause we’re here for today is not just a good one, but a sacred one,” one member of the church said at the beginning of the rally. Political commentator Jim Hightower spoke at the rally to state the activists’ demands. “We’re not just here to honor the memory of the workers,” Hightower said. “We’re here for just a little bit of justice. We’re not asking for the whole thing. If we were, we’d be asking for Wall Street salaries and benefits — now that would be justice.”

Also speaking at the rally were several faculty members who expressed solidarity with the students for standing with them. After rallying, students marched around campus then moved downtown, disrupting an event held by the Mayor of Modesto

San Francisco Bay Area, 13.03.2011 07:36

At a news conference on February 18th, 2011, Japanese Fisheries minister Michihiko Kano stated they will suspend their "research" whaling because the Sea Shepherd activists had succeeded in their attempts to harass those who hunt and kill whales in the Antarctic region.

Reuters.

March 26th - Labor March downtown starting at LA Convention Center. Started out being for grocery workers, but has opened up to be for general labor and community issues. MORE...

You have no excuse to stay home, unless you're disabled - and if you're disabled, try to support the GWS action to raise the issue of cuts to Medi-Cal and disability, which are being cut along with other welfare. Wisconsin's Austerity Measures: Spread the Chaos From Capitol to Capital

United States, 12.03.2011 01:40

March 10, 2011 (from crimethinc.com blog)--Since February 15, the capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin has been at the center of a storm of popular protest against proposed austerity measures including anti-union legislation. Hundreds of people occupied the building until March 3, touching off other actions around the state, including an ongoing university occupation in Milwaukee that began March 2.

On March 9, while Senate Democrats were absent in protest, Wisconsin’s Republican Senators passed a bill stripping public-sector unions of collective bargaining rights. In response, thousands returned to the capitol building, forcing open windows and pushing past state patrolmen to reenter and occupy it. Police eventually gave up attempting to control the crowds, and the announcement went out that they would not remove demonstrators from the building despite the court order that had forced the end of the previous occupation. At the high point on Wednesday evening, several thousand people filled the first three floors of the building entirely; after midnight, a few hundred still remained, despite the usual pleas from authoritarian organizers for people to leave.

Unions are legally prohibited from calling for a general strike, but there has beenmuch talk of striking. In any case, a series of protests are planned for the next several days. In addition to this list of demonstrations Thursday morning, Thursday evening a flash mob is planned for the university library in Madison at 10 pm, Saturday farmers will drive their tractors into Madison in protest, and it’s rumored that teaching assistants will go on strike on Monday when the state contract with the Teaching Assistants’ Association expires.

Events are still unfolding in Wisconsin, and may yet escalate further. But we can already draw some conclusions from them, which can guide us in the months ahead–for Wisconsin is surely only the first of many states that will see public outrage over austerity measures. read more

Montana Citizens Temporarily Block Tar Sands Refining Shipments

Portland, 11.03.2011 22:38

Missoula, MT, March 10, 2011 - At about 2:30 am on Thursday morning, two residents of Missoula, MT, Carol Marsh and Ann Maechtlen sat down in the middle of Reserve St. in an attempt to halt the shipment of large, oversize loads of equipment heading to a ConocoPhillips tar sands oil refinery in Billings, MT. They were joined in protest with about 100 community members stopping the loads temporarily.

Conoco Phillips, the third largest integrated energy corporation in the United States, operates a tar sands refinery in Billings and has a 50 percent equity interest in the proposed Keystone XL Energy Pipeline, which would cut through the Northeastern portion of Montana, transporting large quantities of tar sands crude to Texas, a project that has sparked an outpouring of opposition from Glasgow to the Gulf

Marsh, a retired journalist and grandmother, and Maechtlen, a two-time cancer survivor, attempted three or four times to block the shipments but the police refused to arrest the two women, instead opting to forcefully remove them to the sidewalk as they were cheered on by a crowd of about 100 supporters. The police cited and released one other man who sat down with the two women.

The action was the culmination of a "welcome to Missoula" street party organized by local grassroots group Northern Rockies Rising Tide (NRRT) in an effort to take back the streets from Big Oil.
