At 1pm this afternoon, Palomar withdrew its proposal to build its 220-mile pipeline through Oregon's best farmland, most pristine rivers, and 47 miles of the beautiful Mt. Hood National Forest!

For over three years Bark has tenaciously fought this threat to Mt. Hood National Forest, challenging NW Natural's (one of Palomar's backers) belief that our ecosystems should be sacrificed for more fossil fuel infrastructure. Bark is proud to say that your time and financial support has paid off. Thank you for supporting Bark during these times.

What's next?
Celebrate! We saved the Clackamas River, Fish Creek, the Pacific Crest Trail, and towering old growth forests!
Stay tuned- Bark is currently speaking to media outlets, decision makers, and will be updating our website regularly this week.

Today, shortly after noon, Malcolm Chaddock, a member of Veterans for Peace, imprisoned himself in a cell outside Pioneer Courthouse Square in a direct action to raise public awareness of the torture and solitary confinement of Bradley Manning, accused of leaking government documents to Wikileaks.

[...] While he stood inside his "prison cell," protestors held signs with the names of the "Real Criminals:" CIA, FBI, UN, Halliburton, KBR, Bush, Obama, Cheney, Rice, Hillary Clinton, General James Amos, Attorney General Eric Holder, and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Others also accused "Capitalism, US Empire, Corporate America, Shell Oil and Blackwater" as the real criminals.

The Uncommon Valor of Bradley Manning Blocked at Quantico Brig

DC, 22.03.2011 14:33

What do you do when you are sent off to war for a lie, and come to realize that it's many multiple compound lies. If you are an American Patriot, you do all in your power to right the wrongs. Bradley Manning is accused of doing just that, he supposedly provided thousands of US Government messages for distribution to the press via the Wiki-leaks internet site. He is incarcerated in the Marine Corp Brig at Quantico, Virginia under what is described as Guantanamo like conditions. And if found guilty, condemned to life in prison or death. Video

$ave America: Stop the War$ -- Action in Medford, OR 3.19.11

Rogue Valley, 21.03.2011 14:50

3/19/11 Medford, Oregon--VISIBILITY was the word for this day of reckoning. For eight years we have marched and we have rallied. We have stood in black and in some rallies we have sported our colors. We have sung, we have laughed and we have cried...

On March 19, 2011 we were visible... $ave America: Stop the War$ is being "branded" into the souls of each and every person in our country as we watch our schools crumble and so many other public institutions crack and break apart.

Billboards, banner hangs, and counter recruitment on the eighth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq were very visible in Medford, Oregon.

Most remarkable was the fantastic local news coverage from KOBI channel 5 television, our area's NBC affiliate. CP&J's Ruth Dailey, Daniel Guy, and Kent Clinkinbeard spoke eloquently about the Costs of War. Below read Ruth Dailey's report.

Video: M19.2011-Military Madness Robs Us All

Portland, 21.03.2011 12:22

Portland Rally at Pioneer Square and March through Portland commemorating 8 years in Iraq, and protesting the ongoing wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan and now Libya. But this is only the tip of the iceberg of our love affair with Empire, war and death.
How Is The War Economy Working Out For You?

"According to the Defense Department's annual "Base Structure Report" for fiscal year 2003, which itemizes foreign and domestic U.S. military real estate, the Pentagon currently owns or rents 702 overseas bases in about 130 countries and has another 6,000 bases in the United States and its territories."
"The military high command deploys to our overseas bases some 253,288 uniformed personnel, plus an equal number of dependents and Department of Defense civilian officials, and employs an additional 44,446 locally hired foreigners. The Pentagon claims that these bases contain 44,870 barracks, hangars, hospitals, and other buildings, which it owns, and that it leases 4,844 more." Common Dreams

These are just examples of the War Economy of the United States. It reaches into the very heart of our country and exudes from every pore. In order to dominate the planet and insure our security, the U.S. allocates 59% of it's discretionary budget to the Military(Department of Defense, War, Veterans Affairs and Nuclear Weapons Programs.
Such expenditures constantly demand cuts in funding for education, health care and other social service programs, as evidenced, for example, by recent Republican attempted cuts to Planned Parenthood and National Public Radio.

Master of Ceremonies for the event was Mark Knudson, senior pastor at Augustana Lutheran Church in Portland. He gave a few brief introductory comments and introduced four speakers: Ray Harris, President of Oregon Iraq Vetrans Against the War; Will Seaman, member of various Portland groups and speaking for Community Meida in general and KBOO 90.7 Radio in particular; Barbara Dudley, former director of Greenpeace USA and currently active with the Working Family Party of Oregon; and Francisco Lopez, Oregon CAUSA.

Bradley Manning, alleged WikiLeaks whistleblower, is being held under brutal conditions, accused of exposing war crimes. Amnesty International has described his solitary confinement at Quantico as "unnecessarily harsh and punitive" and "... appeared to breach the USA's human rights obligations."

As people of conscience in Portland we object to his treatment, which includes forced nudity and twenty-three hour a day solitary confinement. President Obama has repeatedly said that torture would not be tolerated under his administration, but he ignores requests for humane treatment for Manning.

March 26th - All out against the cuts

United Kingdom, 20.03.2011 23:01

March 26 looks set to be the biggest street mobilisation in Britain since the anti-war march of 2003, with hundreds of thousands likely to join the TUC's "March for the Alternative". As the Con-Dem government escalates the class war with its cuts package, and following the rebellious creativity of the recent student protests, not to mention the uprisings sweeping the Arab world, will the crowd be content just to obey the TUC leaders and march from A to B? Following several calls to turn it into a day of real action against the government and the economy [NetworkX | Rallying Call | UK Ungoverned], various groups have announced plans including feeder marches, blockades and more. In particular, occupations should be a key theme as UKuncut plan to take over Oxford Street and another secret target, and others call to "Occupy Everything". Will this be the turning point where the energy and rage seen on the streets this winter spreads beyond the youth to workers and all who will stand and fight? Read more...

SchNEWS 763: Nuclear Power: Going Critical

United Kingdom, 19.03.2011 12:07

The terrifying situation in Japan has rekindled the debate over nuclear power around the world. While in the US, Obama has reaffirmed his support for nuclear power to protect the massive investment his administration has made in the industry, over in Germany and Switzerland the governments have jammed the brakes on plans to build and replace nuclear plants. In the UK, David Cameron has already declared his intention to push on with plans to expand the UKs nuclear capacity, with up to eleven new power stations.

Government and the nuclear industry have been close since the Blair government announced plans to build a new generation of nuclear power plants in 2006. In 2007, those plans were ruled “unlawful” by the High Court, who labelled the public consultation “misleading, seriously flawed, manifestly inadequate and procedurally unfair”. And yet despite the change in government we’re still firmly set on the nuclear path.[Continued]

NYC's anti-gay St. Pat's parade: LGBT groups demand removal of NYPD contingents

NYC, 18.03.2011 21:48

LGBT activists today announced plans to protest NYPD participation in the New York City St. Patrick's Parade, which takes place this Thursday. The parade is touted by organizers as an “anti-gay, Catholic” event, and has been defined in court as a “private, religious procession” in order to preserve the right to exclude LGBT marchers. In advance of the parade, a group of eleven LGBT community organizations delivered a letter to NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly calling for the full withdrawal of uniformed officers from the anti-gay march. Protesters contend that NYPD marching contingents violate NYC's human rights code.
