Santa Cruz, CA, 29.03.2011 20:17

On Saturday, April 2nd, Dr. Mazin Qumsiheh, a Palestinian author and activist, will speak about militant nonviolence and the Palestinian struggle at three events in Santa Cruz. Viewpoints will galvanize around the following topic of discussion: "Given the current turmoil in Egypt, the impasse in making progress towards a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the prominent role that the U.S. government plays in the Middle East region, what should be the priorities of U.S. Middle East policy and why?"

March 26 Labor Solidarity March Photos

LA, 28.03.2011 23:30

On March 26th, "Our Communities, Our Jobs" the largest worker solidarity march, probably in Los Angeles history, brought together all of L.A. labor, ranging from big unions like SEIU, Teamsters, UFCW, CWA, and Carpenters, to the smaller organizations like the numerous construction unions, Hollywood unions, firefighters, the IWW, worker organizations, community organizations, and unaffiliated allies.

The march went from the convention center to Pershing Square, and stopped at a hotel to support UNITE-HERE organizing there, stopped at a T-Mobile shop to support CWA organizing T-Mobile, stopped at Ralphs to tell the supermarkets to negotiate with UFCW, and stopped at Chase to highlight the causes of this lousy economy.

Estimates on size vary from just under 10,000 (LAPD estimate) to 30,000. (Photo at left by David Sachs)

Education Summit Audio Reportback: Part 2 Problems

Rochester, 28.03.2011 04:47

The Community-wide Summit for Educational Change, which took place on March 11th and 12th, was a culmination of over a year of organizing. Many of the groups who put on the summit, had already spent months fighting successfully to stop mayoral control of the Rochester City School District. After that battle was finished, they expanded their efforts to create an "inclusive, collaborative, real education reform effort in the Rochester City School District."

This is the second in a series of audio reportbacks from the summit. The report focuses on problems in the district and plans for addressing them.

Stay tuned next week for the final reportback.

Author/artist/scientist Laura Cunningham on \\

LA, 27.03.2011 22:18

For her book, Cunningham spent over 20 years illustrating how California might have looked before the arrival of Europeans. Her artwork often goes back centuries and even millennia (and on a few occasions all the way to the ice age).

Among her illustrations is a striking view of the San Fernando Valley (as seen on the book cover), not too long ago with a grizzly bear in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains overlooking uncorrupted land. Another local scene by Cunningham shows San Bernardino with 15-foot-tall sun flowers. Since 1937 these plants were thought to be extinct, but recently some were found near LA. In "State of Change," this awe-inspiring paining is juxtaposed with a modern freeway on-ramp.

Chicago Protests Eight Years of War and Occupation

Chicago, 27.03.2011 19:16

On March 19, 2011, about a thousand people rallied at what's now called "Liberation Square" at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Congress Parkway in downtown Chicago. The rally focused against U.S. wars abroad, including the ongoing occupation of Afghanistan, and the continuing U.S. involvement in Iraq despite an ostensible end to the war in Iraq.

But participants also raised concern for a number of other issues of interest, including the recent attacks on organizing rights in Wisconsin and across America, and against the recent intimidation of political activists by the FBI in Chicago and elsewhere.

The protest began at Liberation Square, marched north up Michigan Avenue, to the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Michigan Avenue for a concluding rally.

Anti-cuts protestors take over London

United Kingdom, 27.03.2011 16:01

Yesterday’s March 26th ‘March for the Alternatives’ saw over 500,000 protest against Con-Dem governments’ neo-liberal austerity measures. The direct action on the streets of central London was also unprecedented in terms of scale and rage. The police were outrun on the streets, with their media spokesperson forced to concede that it is impossible to protect every business in the capital. Those businesses that were affected by actions were either linked to tax-evasion, or were symbols of affluence and privilege.

The compromised TUC leadership speaks in the same tone as the police and corporate media when it denounces direct action. In reality there was a palpable show of class solidarity between rank and file trade unionists, anti-cuts activists and black bloc-ers.

Over 200 arrests were reported and this number can be expected to grow as police review footage from the day and mount raids.

Six Jimmy John's Workers Illegally Fired After Campaigning for Paid Sick Days

United States, 27.03.2011 12:58

Sandwich Chain Seeks to Suppress Educational Poster on the Risks of Eating Food Prepared by Sick Employees

MINNEAPOLIS--JimmyJohnsWorkers.org--In an effort to silence employees who have blown the whistle on serious food safety hazards at Jimmy John's, the company fired six workers Tuesday, March 22 for putting up posters (see image) demanding the right to call in sick and paid sick days in order to avoid exposing customers to infection. Under current policy, Jimmy John's workers are disciplined for calling in sick if they cannot find a replacement, forcing many workers to make sandwiches while ill.

"It just isn't safe -- customers are getting their sandwiches made by people with the flu, and they have no idea," said Micah
Buckley-Farlee, one of the fired workers, "and now we're getting fired for blowing the whistle on this disgusting practice. Rather than safeguard public health and do the right thing for their employees and their customers, Jimmy John's owners Mike and Rob Mulligan are trying to silence us. These illegal and offensive firings will not stand."

Eviction Blockades springing up across US

United States, 27.03.2011 12:58

Activists across the country are working to keep families in their homes by blockading evictions.

In Rochester, Catherine Lennon and her family are still living in their home at 9 Ravenwood Ave. after nearly two weeks of eviction defense and half-hearted attempts by marshals and movers to force her out. Their mortgage lender and government bailout recipient, Countrywide—later bought by Bank of America just before it went belly-up—refused to renegotiate the mortgage, sending the family’s house into foreclosure. In 2010, Countrywide sold the house to Fannie Mae and now Fannie is seeking to evict the family of 11. [Full Story: Cathy Lennon is Still in Her House! (with video reportback)].

In Boston, an eviction blockade organized by City Life/Vida Urbana was successful in preventing the eviction of a Hyde Park family. About 80 people gathered at the home of Herbert St. Simon to prevent constables from evicting him and his family as part of a foreclosure by Aurora Bank. Chanting and waving signs, most of the blockaders marched in a circle on the sidewalk, while a few brave souls locked themselves to the interior of the house with chains. Chicago Peace Protesters Win Key Victory in Seventh Circuit Court

Chicago, 26.03.2011 22:09

On March 20, 2003, Chicago police and Illinois troopers arrested nearly 900 activists and passersby amid the legendary 2003 Chicago peace protest on Lake Shore Drive. Attorneys on behalf of the protest filed suit against the city and the police to win a measure of justice for peace activists.

All charges against the arrestees were ultimately dismissed. But it took three years for the lawsuit to win class action status. Moreover, in a peculiar move, the City of Chicago countersued against the arrestees, though that suit was eventually dismissed.

The suit itself was dismissed in a summary judgment, yet on March 17, 2011, an appeal to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago ruled in favor of the protesters. That ruling affirmed the rights to protest and assemble, and concluded "the case is already more than seven years old and we urge its expeditious resolution." Read more | Ruling from Seventh Circuit

Studenckie dni mobilizacji we Włoszech i Europie

Poland, 26.03.2011 14:22

Demonstrację zorganizowano w ramach 3-dniowych europejskich dni akcji przeciw finansowemu kapitalizmowi i komercjalizacji szkolnictwa; do podobnych masowych protestów i akcji doszło wczoraj i przedwczoraj m.in. w Bolonii,/a>, Londynie, Paryżu, Belgradzie i innych miastach Europy i obu Ameryk.

Strasburg: Zabicie Carla Giulianiego zgodne z Konwencją

Poland, 26.03.2011 13:01

The Associated Supermarket in Park Slope has joined a growing number of food retailers that have discontinued the sale of Sonny & Joe's hummus, over workers' rights concerns at Flaum's East Williamsburg food production and distribution facility. Flaum and its owner Moshe Grunhut illegally fired seventeen of their Latino workers en masse after the employees stood up against over a decade of unlawfully withheld overtime pay, denial of benefits, and abusive treatment from management.

Cathy Lennon is Still in Her House! Nearly 2-Week Old Eviction Blockade Working! The Struggle Continues!

Rochester, 25.03.2011 07:18

Catherine Lennon and her family are still living at 9 Ravenwood Ave. in Rochester, NY after nearly two weeks of eviction defense and half-hearted attempts by marshals and movers to force her out. Against Fannie Mae's eviction orders, Lennon has vowed to stay in her home of seven years—a house that she and her husband and their family shared until he died of cancer.

A call to action was heard by the community and nearly 80 people came out on Monday, March 14 to defend the house. Four people chained themselves to the front steps ready to engage in civil disobedience.

The Lennon family and Take Back the Land - Rochester are calling on Fannie Mae to immediately suspend the eviction and renegotiate a reasonable settlement where the longtime residents can stay in their home and prevent the disintegration of entire family to homelessness.

Come out for an anti-eviction potluck and barbecue on Friday, March 25th, 4-7PM, at 9 Ravenwood Ave.
