March 30 Mass Action Against Austerity in New York: One Activist's firsthand report

Rochester, 03.04.2011 18:24

On Tuesday the New York State legislature passed Governor Andrew Cuomo's austerity budget. 1500 children, parents, educators, students, and activists rallied outside the Senate and Assembly chambers to defend their interests. Citizen Action and other NPO lobbyists were kept out, 100 plus State Troopers were on duty, and anti-Austerity forces were literally swept underground. This was a teachable moment for the left, and a declaration of war upon the poor from the Powers-That-Be.

March 30 Mass Action Against Austerity in New York: One Activist's firsthand report

United States, 03.04.2011 09:02

On Tuesday the New York State legislature passed Governor Andrew Cuomo's austerity budget. 1500 children, parents, educators, students, and activists rallied outside the Senate and Assembly chambers to defend their interests. Citizen Action and other NPO lobbyists were kept out, 100 plus State Troopers were on duty, and anti-Austerity forces were literally swept underground. This was a teachable moment for the left, and a declaration of war upon the poor from the Powers-That-Be.

As we arrived later at 3:00pm to the capitol, the contingent from Buffalo was herded single-file (which broke down rather soon) across the street. The buses were organized by Citizen Action (CA) and Alliance for Quality Education (AQE), with People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH) and local student organizers (e.g. Buffalo State Students for Peace) recruiting locally. On the way to Albany we received the message: sleeping bags and blankets were not allowed into the state capitol. As we entered the state capitol, we were immediately ordered into a line that curved line to enter the security barrier that was staffed by no less than 4 security guards and 1-2 state troopers throughout the day. People were turned away not just for bedding but, their security crackdown also extended to arresting someone for accidentally hitting a guard with a gong later into the afternoon. read more by cliffleft | Report from NYC-Indymedia: New Yorkers Standing up to Budget Cuts (Video) By Michael Fox

The Challenge to the Rule of Money

Portland, 02.04.2011 16:34

How do we escape a system that's tearing up the world? We say `no', and do things differently

"These are days of rage. Rage in the Arab world, of course, but also on the streets of Athens, Dublin, Rome, Paris, Madrid, and now a loud clamourous rage on the streets of London.

An age of crisis is an age of frustrated hopes, frustrated life. We want to go to university but it is too expensive. We need good healthcare, but we cannot pay for it. We need homes, and we can see homes standing empty, but they are not for us. Or, for the millions of people who are starving: we want to eat, we can see that there is plenty of food for everyone, but something stands between us and the food - money, or the lack of it.

And so we rage. We rage all the more because we do not know what to do with our rage, and how to use our rage to make the world a different place..."

Why white people should oppose Whole Foods coming to Jamaica Plain

Boston, 31.03.2011 20:06

It is crucial that I and other white middle and upper class people publicly oppose Whole Foods, and join the fight against it. This article is specifically written to white middle and upper class people, because I am one myself, and because I feel most effective and appropriate communicating with those who approach this issue from a similar background as me. This article explains why I oppose Whole Foods’s plans to move into Jamaica Plain, and why I think you should too.

Private Bradley Manning, Part I: The White House Protest

DC, 31.03.2011 14:38

“If you ask me, it’s torture. You don’t do this to an American servicemember before he has even been tried and convicted. They had him in solitary confinement before he was even charged with anything. That’s wrong. Last time I checked, one of the most fundamental rights we have according to the Constitution is habeas corpus, and that’s totally been denied for Bradley Manning.” “We’re here to take a stand for our brother,” said disabled military veteran Jason Hurd while clutching the White House fence. An organizer with Iraq Veterans Against the War, Hurd was the 92 out of 113 arrested at Saturday’s protest on the eighth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. “Bradley Manning is being accused of treason and all these earnest things when all he was doing was exposing lies, and that is not a crime.” Audio Luke's reportand video on the same protest

Mayor Gray Declines to Meet with Safety Net Supporters

DC, 31.03.2011 14:38

The District of Columbia is facing a deficit of more than $300 million. April 1, Mayor Vincent Gray will transmit a balanced budget to the D.C. Council. In order to do so, the mayor must either cut services or raise revenue, or both. All this past week, Save Our Safety Net (SOS-DC), a grassroots advocacy organization, made and brought lunch to the mayor in the hopes of meeting with him to discuss slightly raising taxes on the District’s highest income earners in order to avoid further cuts to safety net services. The mayor, however, declined to meet with the group. Audio

Invitation to a Drop-In ‘Circle Group’ for Portland Activists, Organizers, Change Agents

Portland, 31.03.2011 01:56

Announcing a regular space for checking in about the ups and downs of activism.
Need a boost in your work for social change? Want to check in with others about a strategy you are considering? Worried that you are burning out? Sensing contradictions in your life and work that need some attention? Wondering how to improve process in your group? Want to help support others by listening and sharing ideas?

The Cascadia Center, an initiative supported by Tryon Life Community Farm, draws on principles of social ecology to offer a space for addressing these needs and issues in a bi-monthly open circle group. Whether you are based in a grassroots organization, a non-profit, a co-op, a union, or a collective, we are hoping you will find this space useful. Hosted by two members of the collective that organizes Cascadia Center offerings, a typical meeting lasts about an hour and a half with social time before and after. We begin with agreements about confidentiality and how we will speak and listen to each other. Then we do check-ins and invite suggestions for topics to address. We then assess which of these are most pressing and start working on them. After an hour or more, we check out and mingle a bit. Note: this is just the first of what will hopefully be many such spaces around the city.

Dates and Times: First meeting, Monday, April 4, and first and third Mondays for April, May and June, 5 - 6:45 pm.

Location: St Francis Church (1131 SE Oak St) in the Che Room, directly across from the Red and Black Cafe on SE 12th and Oak, up the stairs to the right, then down the hall.

Suggested donation (supports Cascadia Center core operations and St Francis utilities): $2-$4. No one turned away for lack of funds.

If you can, please let us know if you plan to attend, by writing cc@tryonfarm.org.

AZ-Köln: Räumung bisher verhindert

Germany, 30.03.2011 13:58

We are One Rallies in Solidarity with Wisconsin on April 4

Santa Cruz, CA, 29.03.2011 20:47

On Monday, April 4th, the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, local coalitions will participate in nationwide actions to support Wisconsin workers, public services and the middle class. Organizers of the 5pm rally at the Santa Cruz County Government Center state, "Dr. King was killed in Memphis, TN, where he had stood with sanitation workers who were struggling for the right to bargain collectively. The actions by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to eliminate collective bargaining - and the gradual eroding of the American middle class - only undermine that struggle."
