Anti-War Activist Brutalized, Maced & Clubbed at Peaceful Demonstration Charged with Slew of Offenses

United States, 16.04.2011 08:01

At the Friday [April 8th] "Stop All Wars at Home and Abroad" demonstration, Buffalo’s part in a national call to action, longtime local activist, Nate Buckley, was tackled, beat with a baton and sprayed with mace at close range. Two other activists were also arrested.

At 4:30PM on Friday, over 70 people gathered at Lafayette Square to protest wars at home and abroad. They marched down Court St to City Hall, past the FBI offices and held a short rally in front of M & T Bank Offices.

M&T was chosen by protest organizers because the huge financial conglomerate has made substantial investments in “defense,” providing material support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and Libya... Read More & Video (courtesy of Artvoice's local blog) | Video by cliffleft

Corporate Tax Dodgers Called to Task

San Francisco Bay Area, 15.04.2011 20:29

Activists in the Bay Area are shining a light on the connection between recently announced budget cuts and a corporate culture of tax evasion. Late last month, members of San Francisco's US Uncut movement held a sit-in at a Bank of America branch in the Mission District to call attention to the fact that the mega bank paid no federal taxes for years 2009 or 2010. This month, as tax-time approaches, banks in San Mateo, San Francisco, and Oakland are protest targets.

Angelinos Protesting Out-of-Control Banks

LA, 15.04.2011 03:38

Protests against banks are being reported in L.A. Some have been targeting Chase Bank (as discussed here), but for almost a year, a weekly demonstration has been taking place in front of Bank of America in Silver Lake (at the corner of Glendale and Silver Lake Boulevards). It is organized by the Silver Lake-Echo Park chapter of The Coffee Party, the only chapter to be engaged in such an action. (It is hoped that other chapters across the country will undertake similar efforts.)

Not surprisingly, public reaction has been rather positive. Some motorists even pull over and join in. The demonstration takes place on Saturdays from 1:30pm to 3.

PORTLAND RISING RALLY AND MARCH FOR JOBS, NOT CUTS!

Portland, 15.04.2011 00:49

Joining the call for "Good Jobs for All" are public and private sector workers from nine local unions who are supporting each others drive for a decent contract.

What: PORTLAND RISING RALLY AND MARCH FOR JOBS, NOT CUTS!
When: April 16, 2011 at 12:00 noon.
Where: Pioneer Courthouse Square, at the corner of SW 6th and Morrison
Special Guest Speaker: Mahlon Mitchell, President of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin

On April 16, 2011, hundreds of community members from all walks of life will join together in downtown Portland to call for "Good Jobs for All" and for Congress to protect the safety net including Social Security and Medicare. Joining the call for "Good Jobs for All" are public and private sector workers from nine local unions who are supporting each other's drive for a decent contract. The march and rally will be in the spirit of Wisconsin - family friendly and strong in spirit with excellent visuals.

Appearing direct from the front lines of the battle in Madison, will be Mahlon Mitchell, President of the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin. When talking about why he led the firefighters into the capitol to protest Scott Walker's attacks on working people, Mitchell explained, "When firefighters see an emergency, we respond."

With millions of Americans unemployed, underemployed and underpaid, the need for a national public works program to put people back to work is becoming increasingly apparent. There is a growing demand for federal programs that will serve to rebuild the crumbling infrastructure and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by using energy efficiency programs and technologies and expansion of public transportation systems. At the same time communities are recognizing the need to protect vulnerable families from homelessness, hunger and other symptoms of poverty by strengthening rather than cutting programs such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Davy V. Confronts White America's Racism and prejudice against Latinos

Rochester, 15.04.2011 00:38

Let's be honest… America is a racist country. It always has been, and it always will be. Racism and prejudice are embedded into it's DNA, woven into it's fabric. America has had a long history of racism, it has infiltrated every aspect of American society and shows no sign of decreasing.

It used to be that the the face of racism was largely black and white. Alot of times when we hear the word "racist", or "racism", we associate it with disturbing images of race riots in the 60's, and African-Americans being doused with fire hoses, as racist pigs sicked their police dogs on them. We also remember images such as signs in establishments reading "No Blacks Allowed" and even water fountains labeled "Whites Only".

As a Latino, I have had my share of encounters with racism. Perhaps I am more sensitized and aware of this issue than other Latinos. But what disgusts me, is not only the racism and hatred that White America has against Latinos, but the fact that many Latino, so called "leaders", "politicians", etc., get so "big headed" with their successes and achievements in life that they take on the mentality of "Oh well, that has nothing to do with me.", and simply choose to look the other way. Never once realizing that despite their accomplishments or level of success, to White America, they are still a Spic, Wetback or Beaner.

Latina, Women's reproductive health and Federal Cuts

DC, 14.04.2011 23:12

NLIRH is a Social Justice Organization Latinas face a unique and complex array of reproductive health and rights issues that are exacerbated by poverty, gender, racial and ethnic discrimination and xenophobia. These circumstances make it especially difficult for Latinas to access reproductive health care services, including the full range of available reproductive health technologies and abortion services. We believe that in order to substantially improve the reproductive health of Latinas and protect their rights to exercise reproductive freedom, NLIRH must locate reproductive health and rights issues within a broader social justice framework that seeks to bring an end to poverty and discrimination and affirms human dignity and the right to self-determination. Mini Maker Faire Combines Technology and Craft to Celebrate the "Maker Movement"

United States, 13.04.2011 12:51

This one-day, family-friendly event celebrates the Do-It-Yourself spirit in our community with demonstrations in arts, crafts, engineering, music, science, and technology projects. At the UC Mini Maker Faire, the focus is on the process of making-not just the finished product. Unlike a typical sale or bazaar, Makers show how to create things instead of just selling their wares. Emerging from the national "maker movement" founded largely by MAKE Magazine, Make: Online, and CRAFT, Maker Faires have rapidly made a significant impact on American culture today. These regional events feature things people create themselves, from James Bond-worthy electronic gizmos to robotics and rockets, to crocheted food items and yarn bombs. Read More | makerfaire.com

10%. Park Threatened!: Just South Of Mississippi Co-op & Blackrose Infoshop & Freecycle

Portland, 09.04.2011 00:36

The green space at 4008 N. Mississippi Ave. Portland, OR will become yet another over priced 'mixed use' development unless we turn up the pressure on wealthy developer Chris Rogers.

For the 3rd time in recent memory a rich developer wants to make even more money by destroying an urban park. This popular park is located next to the Mississippi Ave. ballroom at Shaver. (check out 4008 N. Mississippi Ave. on Google Maps) The project would kill 3 trees in order to put in 48 small studio and 1 bedroom apartments that each cost $850+ a month! In addition to contributing to the unaffordability of the neighborhood the project would harm the low income housing next door. If built it would greatly diminish the solar access and over all livability for low income residents of a house owned by 501(c)3 non profit Portland Collective Housing. This house is an example of truly dense green development where 11 people live under one roof sharing resources, gardening and using bikes and public transportation.

We need your help! Please spread the word and stay updated on the effort to save the park. We'll need people to help us put the pressure on Chris Rogers by calling and emailing him to persuade him that this project isn't worth his time or money.

Abortion and Controlling Women's Bodies Can Shut Down the Federal Govt

DC, 08.04.2011 21:08

In the US version of a looming theocratic state, the entire Federal government can shut down over the right of women to a legal medical procedure called abortion. In particular, Planned Parenthood is supposedly doing abortions w/ federal funding - which they deny. But Women having control of their bodies and bodily functions, has become THE pivotal issue, again, and now determines the future functioning of the state. Some in pro-choice have spent their lives legislating semantics and language, in the face of a full court press from the religious right. WTF! Are we ever going back into the streets? The Budget Stalemate and the Major Media Fail on Riders || Right-Wing Media Falsely Suggest Planned Parenthood Uses Federal Funds For Abortion
