9 killed as Israeli forces attack Nakba marches on northern, southern and central borders

Portland, 15.05.2011 19:49

An estimated four people were killed Sunday on the Syria-Israel border, five killed on the Lebanon-Israel border, 52 injured in Gaza, and at least 24 injured in the West Bank as Israeli forces attacked Palestinian refugees trying to re-enter their former homes in what is now Israel. The day of protests was a commemoration of the 'Nakba' or 'Catastrophe', the day when Israel was created on Palestinian land 63 years ago.

The Israeli military confirmed firing at protesters on the Israel-Syrian border, as thousands of refugees tried to cross into the Golan Heights - a territory that was traditionally Palestinian, but is now a disputed territory claimed by both Israel and Syria. Many Palestinians who lived in the area found their towns and families split in half by the border.?

Initial reports indicate that four people were killed by Israeli gunfire on the Syrian border, and dozens were wounded, as Palestinians crossed dangerous unmapped minefields to cross into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. At least 63 Palestinians have been detained by Israeli forces at protests in the West Bank and Jerusalem since Friday.

Support grows for Uni of Nottingham whistleblower

United Kingdom, 15.05.2011 11:05

There has been growing anger at the University of Nottingham's attempts to silence Dr Rod Thornton, author of a critical article which exposes the complicity of university management in the wrongful arrests of the 'Nottingham Two'. A student and a member of staff – Rizwaan Sabir and Hicham Yezza – were arrested as suspected terrorists in May 2008.

Dr Thornton, who was one of Sabir's tutors in the School of Politics, used information released under Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act requests to piece together a damning picture of the University management's attempts to cover up their wrong doing. The University used legal threats to get the article removed from the British International Studies Association website and, later the same day, suspended Dr Thornton with immediate effect.

On Tuesday 10th May, a letter calling for Thornton's immediate reinstatement, signed by 70 leading academics and scholars from across the world, including Professors Noam Chomsky, Neera Chandhoke, Paul Gilroy and Charles Tripp, was published in the Guardian. On Thursday 12th May, a protest of was held on campus.

Police and FBI set-up in Seattle: a case study

Portland, 14.05.2011 17:54

[W]ake the fuck up or get woke the fuck up!
This is just a link to an article posted on  http://pugetsoundanarchists.org/ It is a detailed account of an entrapment-type undercover operation by the police and FBI in Seattle. In a nutshell, an undercover Seattle police officer tries to badger activists into more risky actions, and failing that, entraps one in a drug-deal by appealing to the activist's sense of friendship and loyalty.

The undercover cop pretended to be an activist, initiated conversations about making molotov cocktails and explosives, tried to push people into doing violent and illegal acts, and encouraged the presence of drugs and guns at after-hours parties.

Here is the link to the article (which originally appeared in the Seattle weekly, the Stranger):

Oxford's position on disagreements within Indymedia in the UK

United Kingdom, 13.05.2011 01:19

There have been disagreements within the UK Indymedia movement for some time. These came to a head on 1 May 2011. As a result, there are now two national projects - Mayday and Be The Media, and conflict between the two groups continues. We don't intend to go into the details here, but you can read about them here (in an attempt to be balanced, we have linked to versions of events from both sides of the argument):
Big changes are coming to Indymedia UK [Part of Be The Media]
The Attempt to Shutdown UK Indymedia [Part of Mayday]

We, the Oxford Collective, have looked into this issue in lot of detail and we take seriously the ongoing dispute and what has happened. We deeply regret the amount of disagreement that has arisen within the UK Indymedia Network.

Oxford Indymedia intend to become a fully autonomous local Indymedia Centre (IMC) and to achieve this intend to go through the 'new global IMC process' as soon as possible.

We plan to adopt a new software system for the management of our site. Until we are able to achieve these aims, Oxford Indymedia will be hosted on the new server managed by members of the Mayday collective. This arrangement is one of technical necessity and should not be read as constituting direct support for the Mayday collective. We will continue to administrate and moderate our site using the logins that we have for the Mir system on this server.

We support both the Be The Media and Mayday projects and would like to see both of them succeed and to work with them in the future.

We invite anybody wishing to get involved in the work of Oxford Indymedia, to come to one of our monthly meetings or get in touch with us via our mailing list.

Grecja: strajk generalny, brutalne stłumienie demonstracji

Poland, 12.05.2011 10:15

Protesters Call for Drastic Change to Japan's Nuclear Energy Policy

San Francisco Bay Area, 12.05.2011 08:44

Japan's Chubu Electric Power Company will start shutting down its nuclear power plant in Hamaoka, approximately 100 miles southwest of Tokyo, this week. Last week Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan made public his directive for the company to suspend its operation. His announcement came just hours before an anti-nuclear power demonstration of 10,000 people in Tokyo. On the same day, activists rallied in solidarity with their Japanese counterparts in front of the Japanese consulate in San Francisco.

The Real Cost of Prisons --An interview with Lois Ahrens

Portland, 11.05.2011 20:24

The racist sub-text of the neo-liberal political agenda succeeded in creating acceptance of mass incarceration while simultaneously creating the laws and industries to police, prosecute, cage and control millions of people?almost all poor people and people of color. Neo-liberal policies have been in place for more than thirty years. As a result many people are not aware that our current political and economic situation is not the result of a natural course of events, but rather, of a systemically created ideology that has pervaded every aspect of our daily lives.

Lois Ahrens is the Founder/Director of The Real Cost of Prisons Project (RCPP) and has been an activist/organizer for more than 40 years. First started in 2001, RCPP brings together justice activists, artists, justice policy researchers and people directly experiencing the impact of mass incarceration to work together to end the U.S. prison nation. RCPP created workshops, a website that includes sections of writing and 'comix' by prisoners, a daily news blog focused on mass incarceration and three comic books that were first created in 2005: Prisoners Town: Paying the Price; Prisoners of the War on Drugs; and Prisoners of a Hard Life: Women and Their Children. Hundreds of organizations around the country use the comix in workshops, outreach and organizing. 135,000 have been printed, while over 115,000 have been sent, free of charge, to organizations and thousands of people held in prisons and jails. Due to lack of funding, Prison Town is now out of print and Prisoners of A Hard Life will soon be as well. Prisoners of the War on Drugs is still available. Print-ready versions of all three are available to view and download here.

American Petroleum Institute-Oil Spill Conference, Portland, May 22-26

Portland, 11.05.2011 06:28

Headsup. There is going to be an International Oil Spill Conference here next week sponsored by the oil lobby group API. Cant find much about it online. Any action on this?

API is right now trying to bribe Congress not to cut its tax subsidies. "At a briefing Monday, a senior tax adviser for the American Petroleum Institute (API), the industry's main lobbying arm, said efforts to repeal the oil and gas tax breaks were a "vindictive use of the tax code." Johnson said oil and gas companies were being singled out by lawmakers because gasoline prices were high. He noted the industry would be willing to support changes to the tax code, as long as the changes were done in the context of comprehensive reform and applied to all industry sectors."

Local Medical Group To Begin Playing Politics With Patient Care

Portland, 11.05.2011 06:28

Northwest Primary Care, a local Medical Group has decided and begun informing patients who have legitimate diagnoses of Chronic Pain that they will no longer be treated with pharmaceutical pain medications if they choose to avail themselves of Medical Marijuana.

Current patients who use both pharmaceutical pain medications (opiates) and medical marijuana will have to decide which of the treatments they can utilize. Those that choose pharmaceutical treatment will be subjected to urine analysis (piss tests) to ensure they are not using medical marijuana at the same time. This will occur even in cases where opiates and MMJ are treating different issues such as pain and loss of appetite as many cancer patients suffer from.

Some may recall that the Obama administration had announced, some time ago, a truce in the federal enforcement of laws against the use of marijuana by those legally using it for medical purposes in States where it has been approved by voters, such as Oregon. However, the Pharmaceutical Industry has in the last few weeks announced that it wants to enter the market of providing, and profiting, from Medical Marijuana. The FDA has, as expected, been receptive to the plan, and are once again targeting the MMJ infrastructure. In Washington state, the Governor vetoed a Dispensary bill due to fear that the federal government will go after state employees who would have administered the dispensary program.

Indypendent Issue 164: The Unbearable Whitness of Being

NYC, 10.05.2011 17:05

Linda Martin Alcoff explores the future of "what it means to be white" in the latest issue of the Indypendent:

Census reports have been tolling the bell of an impending white minority status for some time, but even those who only read the sports page know the demographic future: Latinos and Asians are found today even in the ranks of the National Football League.

Millions of urban whites have been experiencing minority status for decades. New York, Miami, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Detroit, Tampa, Baltimore and Philadelphia are all major cities with a white minority, and more cities are moving in that direction. Some believe that we can reverse course if we put a full stop to immigration and make the life of the undocumented such a living hell that they return home, or just die, but most know better. The jump in Latino numbers, for example, is from new births, not immigration.

Without a doubt, the present-day character and lived experience of whiteness in the United States is undergoing as significant a transformation today as it did a century ago when southern Europeans and the Irish became accepted members of the club. Today, new Latino sub-groupings are poised for inclusion as white, the racial identities of mixed folks are increasingly muddy, and whiteness itself has moved from an invisible default position to an apprehensive self-awareness. Most important, the point of view of non-whites is visible, even in the mainstream and the suburbs."
